Some of my most difficult (and annoying) personal failures (and injuries) have come at the hands of cars. But I always regrouped, finished up, and moved on. Either with the car or without. I always enjoyed the completion stage, even if I was so sick of the car I sold it immediately.
I think you should consider fixing your RS and then reassessing.

Priorities change. Passions change. We each are on our journey to fill our lives with happiness and contentment while on this earth. So, if everything goes, something else will be needed to fill that time used for your personal fulfillment. As long as you and your husband have that planned, I think you'll be fine. Otherwise, there will be an emptiness and idle time, which only leads to weird thoughts. :-)

I would seriously reconsider selling the 911. That heartbreak from the first attempt at the engine rebuild in your garage need not be the precipitating event for parting with it. You can re-group and go at it wiser and stronger. These are amazing cars. They do punish bad maintenance, but they also are durable and nothing else has the same spirit as our air-cooled 911s. ![]() |

I have been thinking of selling for a few years. It is my dream car but I hardly use it, sad.
Health issues, time issues and grandchildren take me away from the garage these days. Plus, I am tired of working on cars, 60 years of it and I have had enough. When I take her out for a drive it all comes rushing back and I back away from the precipice of selling. Looking at retirement in a year or so. More beach, fishing and grandchildren. I'm going to sell sooner than later.

For me, it wasn't really financial. I guess, in the end, it could boil down to a desire to simplify things. Loved everything about the old 911S for a long time. But as it entered the "collector car" world, becoming more sought after by others, with it's dollar value going up, it simply became less and less enjoyable to own and drive. It attracted a few folks I frankly didn't like much...yet every P-car event I went to, there was this one guy and his few "church" followers.
Final straw was one phone call from a person who flat out told me I was going to sell to him, even told me how much he'd pay, but leaving me a window to up the price. I hung up on the bastid, then contacted Evren...got the promise the car would never leave Turkish soil in exchange for a very much friend's price. I miss the car as far as driving goes...but really no regrets, since I no longer have to put up with the flippers and pimps of the early 911 world. There are much higher moral standards in a pool hall than those guys have. (edit) So..it goes beyond "no regrets". I'm glad the car is gone. It had become an albatross around my neck.

I rebuilt the engine on my last Porsche... a '72 with an '82 engine, after missing a shift on the track. I enjoyed the rebuild process despite running into a few snags. The car ran great when I was done, but I was always nervous about the longevity of my own rebuild. Did I do it right? Was it going to come apart at some point? Those thoughts, and just not really having the time to play with the car eventually caused me to sell it. Now prices are just too crazy. I could always justify a $15K 911 as it would maintain its value, but more often appreciate.

The thought of simplifying is very tempting and something I have been thinking about for a while. Not just simplifying the garage but also cleaning out stuff in the house we no longer need or use.
Even when I lost some of my desire to wrench anymore, my husband continued to find it satisfying so there was no reason to bring it up. I think this was just a catalyst to start clearing things from the garage. Our lives are changing: we have a son half way through college. I've been at home for the last 20 years raising our son but returned to nursing school, which I will finish up in December. I have a job I love that will hopefully will move to a promotion and fully time once school is done. Sometimes you have to move on from one thing to get something else you are shooting for. I see letting go of some of the cars as a way of shifting focus. In the end, they are just things. Most important to me, spending my time with my husband, enjoying our empty nest time together in whatever comes next.

Sounds like you have your mind set, but I would keep the 930: the rest, ehhh let em go.

Does your son have any interest in them at all? Mebbe not right now, while he's in college, but later on? Just something to consider ....
If you sell all the p-cars, will you "poof, gone!" from PPOT? KEEP THE 930 ![]() |

Son has zero interest in the cars. Not sure if he was switched at birth or what, lol. And no, you won’t get rid of me that easily. I’d miss you guys if I left PPOT.

Said before, above. Priorities change, the band width one has for all the cloying possessions narrows and watching some old favorites go unused and less appreciated............
the smart person unloads the baggage..... fired up my 22 year old Carrera today, purrs like a kitty. Still pretty as ever and the inside still smells of the leather trim. I did part with an old P car "friend" several years now........... acquired in '92........... just did not give it enough attention and a multitude of needed things pushed me to the edge of despair. I really appreciated that car............ saw me through many transitions in life......... I just could not do it justice any more. |

Well, that certainly sucks. But if you're serious,(kind of hope you are not) send me a PM or an email. I'll actually be in Central tomorrow. Visting family in Clemson and going to something called "Touch the Trucks" with the nieces and nephews there in Central tomorrow morning. Can't say I am a Lotus fan, but I know a few in the area.

But yes everything else will be up for grabs. I've PM you my number. Oh and after a little nudge (or nagging, however you want to look it), we are working on getting the DD replaced with a Tesla Model 3 performance. Should be ready to pick up this weekend.

Born to Lose, Live to Win

my ideal life would be to live someone where i could have a brand new cayman with MT that i drive daily and no other car. unfortunately i live in a place that is covered in snow and salt almost half the year and buying a new cayman as a weekend car is way out of my budget.
so, with the 911 long since paid for and basically costing me nothing in the 14 years i’ve had it, i don’t see the point in selling it. even when i’m not using it, which is most of the time, i enjoy just sitting in the garage looking at it. but them i’m also faced with certain realities. like right now. it’s a beautiful evening here and i’ll be going out to dinner when my wife gets home. why not take the 911? well, the truth is in many ways my GTi is more fun…and so goes this argument i have in my head…. i gues at the end of the day the 911 is not causing me any pain in any way, i’m not desperate for the money, and i love the thing. i truly would miss it if my 911 was a car with a lot of mechanical or cosmetic issues, no doubt i would get rid of it. but it’s not. it’s treated me very well and never caused me a bit of stress

Good, I am glad you both decided to not knee jerk sell the 930. The one car I mildly regretted selling at the time was my 964T. I was newly divorced and had a great opportunity to buy the house I was renting in the same neighborhood as my ex so it would be easy for the kids.
Not one day goes by where I am upset now that I sold it, I have a great relationship with my ex, my kids are happy and well adjusted (my daughter starts at KU in August and my son finished his freshman year of HS playing two sports with a 4.0), so being close to her and changing my priorities worked out well. I was without a Porsche for a few years before I realized I missed it, the driving and the people I met at events and so on, and have had a 996TT and my current 997 GT3RS. Who knows what I will do in the future and may one day decide I am done with it as well. That isn't today though, damn Porsche nailed that car. |
