http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1625586077.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1625586077.jpg mailman dropped off my $5 grips......threw them on along with the turn signals end caps... kinda like the simple look. i think i might wrap the grips with the same leather as the seat and suicide shifter, not sure..... i kinda like both ideas..... i WAS going to re-paint the risers black after cleaning them up BUT i kinda like the rough aluminum look....... i think i might just throw some clear on them and leave the look in the picture... it grew on me fast...... i had a few of those clamps left so i threw one onto the end of the grip to set the grip down.... kind liked the look too...... goes with the flow and im hoping its not overkill...... |
Love the full fender.
|
This is the best hardware store I've been able to find in the OC:
https://www.mcfaddendalehardware.com/ They've got a lot of bolts. |
ya me too Milt..... as ive been looking at A LOT of bobber pictures ive noticed sooooo many guys chop the fenders down to a little bitty thing..... i know my full ass fender goes against the grain for most of these garage builds but i really like the look of the full fender so i appreciate the comment for sure.
i even think the look of my lil bucket of bike bolts is growing on you! hahahaha. :) (ok ok maybe im pushing it there) Also..... i wanted to ask you..... you used a term earlier that has stuck in my head over the last few days.... when referring to that BOLT i need.... you mentioned getting "quality" hardware in that particular bolt. besides the painfully obvious (engine mount, keep the motor attached the the frame and secure) Is a bolt from home depot NOT a bolt to use? is there some kind of certification or designation i need to look for in that bolt? Scott... thank you... that shop is super close to my house, i probably will be swinging by there to look into a bolt, depending on what Milt says. |
Rubber Undercoating........ ever use it?
you fellas ever use this rubber undercoating on anything before?
so when i was at pep boys close out sale a few weeks ago.... i bought a can of rubber undercoating..... ive never used it before, hadnt and havent had a need to use it..... but it was a huge can for about $1.50 so i thought why not.... i might need or use it someday..... i may have made a mistake and delayed progress on the fender...... so i thought.... hummmmm maybe its a good time to check this stuff out...see how it works and how it is to work with. ill spray the BOTTOM of my fender with this stuff.... cool layer of protection...... sooooo i taped it off.... and sprayed the under side of my newly cleaned and shiny fender....... didnt think anything of it...... soooooo it sprayed on easily enough....... BUT it was BROWN.... can says black, cap is black but it sprayed on BROWN.... odd... ok ok maybe it dries black...... 5-6 hours later i go to the garage to check it out...... ITS STILL WET 5-6 hours later!....... is that normal? can says otherwise.... can says should be dried to the touch within an hour........ fully cured within 24. doesnt seem like that is happening...... gonna try and get to the garage tonight and look at it again... we'll see. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1625678792.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1625678792.jpg maybe i sand it off and just go with my flat back and matte clear both on top of the fender and under the fender..... so much for trying to be all fancy....... hahahahaha |
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1626285046.jpg
dont bother using this product.... GARBAGE! went on vacation, let it sit for 5 days, should be dried, cured, hardened. it wasn't. Even though i sprayed 3 coating on, it seems super thin and comes of with ease. i may have to sand it off and re-spray with flat black paint. odd that it failed so miserably as a product. taped off entire underside of the fender (im sure this product will come right off with the tape when i take the tape off) either way..... i prepped the topside of the fender...... i had 2 cans of primer that were sitting around..... sprayed on 3 coats last night..... gonne let dry and sand smooth almost ready to spray on some flat black, maybe a graphic pinstripe,....... then onto matte clear! im looking forward to getting the fender onto the bike. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1626285436.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1626285436.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1626285436.jpg |
]
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1626290232.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1626290269.jpg so i was thinking of a couple of comments that someone shared about how rough of a ride my current seat spring set up is going to offer..... i happen to come across this 4inch shock absorbers made for a seat suspension...... i wonder if these would be better for a less harsh ride down to the corner and back........ thoughts? |
unsolicited update..................
SOOOO I had some interesting developments over the weekend......
i ended up painting my fender flat black and shot some matte clear on top as planned....... the flat black went on ok and i was happy..... i applied the 1st coat of matte clear and i was pretty happy... looked really nice and even....... i super happy..... then................ i hit it with the 2nd coat of clear and things went sideways..... oddly enough the top of the fender developed kind've a milky white color to it.... it was odd. NOT streaky or uneven or anything like that... it just kinda looked discolored, like it had faded a bit...... but i was on the 2nd coat so i just said f-it.... kept applying clear, i applied a total of 4 coats of matte clear. i hoped that once it dried the color would even out and be ok....... it didnt.... evened out a bit, but still had a bit of discoloration...... it was smooth and even with no runs or other issues. (NNNOOOO IT WAS NOT PERFECT OR NEAR PERFECT) it was clean and smooth. bugged me a bit overnight....................... i was hoping it was gonna come out nice...... THEN i thought.... WTF! WTF do i care?.... NOTHING on this bike is perfect or even close to that.. i have no idea what im doing so why is this any different of a standard that i have had so far..... so in being IMPERFECT it was in fact perfect..... i am at peace with it |
soooo.... once it was dried i was thinking, do i add a graphic or leave it plain.....
maybe apply the same graphic theme as on the tank and carry it down to the fender...... i looked at 3 options..... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1626716051.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1626716095.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1626716135.jpg any thoughts on which one to go with? |
since i was looking to add a graphic on the fender i added a red pinstripe to the IMPERFECT tank to add a little bit of color....... i kinda liked it.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1626716401.jpg i didnt mean for this pic to be an "artsy" shot but it turned out kinda artsy looking..... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1626716417.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1626716435.jpg |
I like what you did on the tank , I would continue that style/color theme onto the fender .
|
Soooooo i tried out the different ideas on the rear fender.... thanks rfuerst911sc !
BUT..... i decided to go with NO graphics on the fender...... it just looked too busy for me..... i like the way the plain fender looked/looks. moving forward........ going to buy the mounting bolt we talked about earlier..... |
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1627490541.jpg
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1627490541.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1627490541.jpg sooooo as previously mentioned.... i have NO IDEA about these things but i know i need to replace this bolt. here are a couple of pictures...... anything i need to know or be aware of when buying a replacement bolt ? or is it pretty straight forward in finding the right length, 2 nuts, 2 washers, to lock washers ?????? (besides making sure its a strong/good quality bolt) |
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1628009251.jpg
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1628009251.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1628009251.jpg so finally got some time to get into the garage after several days of family stuff. pulled out the old leather jacket i've used for the seat and shifter and was really curious to see what the grips would look like if i wrapped them in the same leather.... soooooo another project. i kinda like the way it looks...... i think they stay! i also took my new found friend the wire wheel and hit the throttle assembly and bolts.... i was planning on buying new ones.... BUT these cleaned up well and work perfectly fine..... i also polished the black casing..... looks good enough for me !!!!! |
on a side note... small detail.
the engine mounting bolt is installed. it was pretty easy and was and straight forward..... not sure why i was stressed out about that..... seems silly now. |
I've been doing a number of painting projects for my wife recently and had a problem with runs. So much so that I sent an email to Krylon complaining about it. Sent them a picture of the can and what I'd sprayed and today I received a box containing 6 cans or replacement paint.
It could have been old paint or old paint combined with our humid weather of late. All I know is I was surprised when a six pack of paint showed up today. Guess it was easier for them to ship 6 vs 1. I keep looking at your seat in the pics and thinking it would look better with those button head cap screws (if that's what they are) turned upside down from the way they're installed now. I know the nuts are the industrial look you're going for but with the uneven amount of thread protrusion it doesn't look as finished as it could be. As a former rider I also wouldn't want those hose clamps on the grips either, but that's just me. |
Hey Scott......
wow, that was nice of Krylon....... we have had some bad weather for sure, the humidity has been tough...... painting would be a nightmare, but you got some new inventory to spray with some good old fashioned staggering dry heat! as far as the nuts and bolts on the seat..... i TOTALLY understand what your saying...... i and i even AGREE with you, it would look more finished for sure. BUT if that is the standard or the baseline, then i may as well throw this project into the trash bin as NOTHING on this project is done properly or as well as if can be done, nothing. but thats kinda the point of the build. im not taking ANYTHING on this bike to that degree..... the tank paint job is way below average, the paint on the fender is even worse, the shifter project is a garage job, the paint is $1 a can...... (the clear i splurged to 3.50 a can) the leather on all of it was a total of $4.00 from a big arse leather jacket...... sooooooo for now... the seat stays as is.... the good thing is that if i change my mind down the road, it will take me 5 min to remove the seat and 10 min to change out the nuts to the acorn head nut...... a far as the hose clamps on the grips.... same kinda thing... i like the way it looks for now... if i change my mind from looks or performance perspective then i unbolt the clamp and remove, all within 5 min...... so far.... i'm liking the industrial, rookie, unfinished kinda look........ if i change gears somewhere down the road, i change gears.... thats it. im not vested in this at all. i love the ideas and suggestions that are different than mine...... i welcome them all. |
Finally !!!!!
SSSSoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo.............. .........
after months and months of LIFE taking me away from my weak attempt to building and frankensteining a Bobber together....... i think i am back to the build. (in the last few months, bought a final/last house, remodeled it, remodeled old house and got it ready for renting, that sucked. Got a chance to build my garage the way i wanted to do it since i wont be going anywhere anytime soon !) http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1653064108.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1653064108.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1653064108.jpg |
Headligjhts.......
soooo this weeks minor project was to blend an old headlight housing and headlight to a new headlight into the old housing after some clean-up and painting and "McGyvering" to get them to fit together.......
i think i did it but i wont know until i get the thing wired and fired up.... so far i like the blend between the old and the new........ http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1653064483.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1653064483.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1653064483.jpg |
