Sunglasses with glass lenses?

I’m thinking of dropping some money on a good pair of glasses. Great ones.

Leaning towards BAJIO glasses. I think they are an off-shoot of Costas. Are they (glass lenses) heavy? How scratch resistant are they?

Buying glasses without trying them on makes me nervous. Costas are readily available at stores around here. Bajio’s not so much.

Thoughts?

I cannot imagine polycarbonate lenses to be more scratch resistant than glass. And I think the thickness of a glass lens would be a function of the optical prescription. If you are terribly far-sighted, then they will be like coke bottle bottoms. If no optical prescription is needed, then I would expect them to be thin enough that weight is not a problem.

Never heard of BAJIO, but I have several pairs of sunglasses with glass lenses (Maui Jim Costa, Revo, Ray Ban). It really depends on the frame/brand - I have some that are noticeably heavier than plastic, to the point where they could be uncomfortable to wear all day long. Others though, I hardly realize they are glass. I agree re buying without trying on - it's a crapshoot. I can't really speak to scratches, I tend to be very careful.

One good thing about glass is that it's a built in UV filter...no need for that coating. Your corrective prescription has a lot to do with weight. If no prescription, the federal law on shatterresistance applies. Meaning that by law, there is a minimum lens thickness.

Second hand info gleaned from my opthalmologists office...

I had a pair of Porsche Design glasses with titanium frames and glass lenses. They were the best sunglasses I've ever had, and one of my focuses for sunglasses is that they are light weight. The glass lenses didn't really seem to weigh much.

The sunglasses that I had were extremely durable until I had taken them and hung them on the front of my shirt and then leaned across a car door where the window was partially down. I pressed them into the top edge of the window and that scratched them.

One of the biggest reasons most "glasses" use a plastic and not glass lens is weight. Many if not a majority of prescriptions will be pretty heavy if the lenses are very large. If you can handle John Lennon style glasses, then glass is the easy answer.

My glasses are a titanium Flexon frame and plastic lenses with UV, and scratch resistance coatings. No line bifocals. They are not cheap by anyone's thinking. I usually get three or so years out of the lenses before I got new lenses in my same frames. I have a cheap set of backup glasses that use a same size lens, so the old lenses get put in the cheap backup glasses.

Look into the Flexon frames. I left them in the seat of my 911, and sat on them. No damage at all. And they got a butt cheek full force.

And try on a pair of glass lens glasses to see if they are heavy. It will all come down to what is comfortable for you. And have them fit to your head by a professional optometrist.

More info. These will be for fishing. I need side coverage. Bajio is a company created by some ex-Costa employees. Seems like the same formula for sure.

I think you could definitely pull off the Cometas!

And the pros - 1 easy to find, 2 won't get hot, 3 won't get stolen.

I have had a pair of Serengeti Velocity (current model name) sunglasses for at least 10 years. The are photochromic mineral glass with titanium frame, very light and very tough. I have used this brand for maybe 30+ years.

I'm a Maui Jim fan. The optics are incredible and it's a great company, they really take care of you. I've had lenses and frames replaced at no charge several times over the years.
I've worn glass lenses before and much prefer plastic for the weight factor. The new plastic doesn't scratch easily.
Lucky me, after wearing prescription lenses for years I wear non prescription Maui's now. My eyeballs apparantly changed shape at 60 and my distance vision is great again. The doc said it happens rarely but can happen. An old age blessing! (one of one)

Randolph is (mostly?) USA-made and have many glass options. Some even MIL-spec if you want to relive those sweaty volleyball games with movie stars (or fly fighter jets).

I have two pair, one glass and one polycarb and they're good at half the price of something like Revo and the like. I'd buy a third pair but at this point I don't really need to...

Great thread!

I have been wearing the same frame Costa's for probable 20 years. I originally got them for fly fishing and love them so much I have multiple pairs. Some with the 580g polarized glass lenses and some without. I really cannot tell a difference in weight and the glass ones are less prone to scratching so those are my go to for every day.

The pair I wear on the motorcycle have the plastic lenses.

Costa no longer sells the frame I wear (Triple Tail) but when I scratch/break them I still send them in for repairs. I also have a few other pairs of nice ones I have tired over the years, but I always go back to these.

I have a pair that are the more modern look like what you linked to Vash and they do provide good coverage. I do not think I would buy anything online without trying it on unless I could return them.....

I take care of my stuff and sunglasses are never something I have wanted to skimp on. For yardwork/hunting I have an older pair that are not polarized so i do not worry if they get scratched.

Randolph, at the time (2019?) didn't do polarized glass, only plastic - so that might be worth consideration. My plastic "raptors", not seemingly on the site now, were polarized PC but not "aviator" style.
