G'day!
|
Potato Chip rant.....
I've finally had enough.
Typically, I end up with only 50% by volume (on a good day!) chips that are large enough to use in the conventional sense. The rest are these itty bitty things that resemble corn flakes more than the photo on the cover of the bag. False advertising! Quite a few years ago I called up the potato chip company and (politely) voiced my displeasure about this very topic, and they sent me a bunch of discount coupons. Fast forward to tonight. I have some dip I wanted to consume and as usual - with this last half bag of Ruffles these chips are just way too small, so I am going to call Frito Lay tomorrow and try to get some info. Starting off with......when your bag of chips comes out of the factory before any handling....do all the chips look like the ones on the bag cover photo? At some point I also plan to buy a few more bags....pour each one out onto a large tray....and document by photo what the consumer is actually getting. I was told once by a chip rep who was stocking his product at a store that all this breakage is due to the handling. Well...if that's true it seems like they need to work out a better system of getting chips to the consumer. Sorry for the long rant but stay tuned - I will update the thread! ![]() ![]()

Damn! Now I want some chips and dip. My favorite is the Lipton onion soup dip. But I also like the hidden valley ranch dip.

Save those crumbly bits as a topping for mac & cheese.

The chips you want for dipping are Fritos Scoops.
You won't get a half bag of small chips with those, IMO.

I like the "scoops" sometimes for my tostidos chips.....but for some dips I prefer a potato chip. Tonight it was Jalapeno/Cheddar.

Take a look at the History channel (yeah, yeah, I know) and their Food that built the world, or something like that, episode on chips. Pretty interesting, especially how Cheetos came to be.

I understand the concern and agree that the product needs to be mostly like it appears on the bag.
That said, First World Problem: "my chips aren't large enough to scoop up dip to snack on" (as opposed to "I didn't have money to eat today". Be thankful that this is your worst problem of the day.

With respect. this really is a first world problem.
The real question is... what are you scooping? ranch? guac? tuna? lard?

Another Lipton dip fan. A close second is Tostitos "Hint Of Lime" tortilla chips with Pico De Gallo.

Forget Ruffles - You want Kettle brand Krinkle Cut chips - consistently good chip size, good density in the bag, and even the crumbly bits at the bottom are good.

Their Salt and Pepper, Salt and Vinegar, Jalapeno, several flavors of BBQ, all tasty. Honestly, Kettle brand chips don't really need dip. Sometimes Ruffles are the right chip for the job.

I sell a few hundred of those bags each day. I can say the really big bags get the worst treatment because they don't fit as well into the shipper, or collapsing case. Having said that, some stores and some delivery guys do a better job, and in some stores customer themselves pick over the bags and drop them. Try buying from a different store on a different delivery route, and try a smaller format store. You may find a difference from say, Target or Walmart if you go to a smaller and faster moving store. Since I sell them out every 3-4 days, I know ours are straight out of the plant for the most part. Sometimes, Pepsi Frito Lay brings me bags from a store that can't sell very well. They dump product into my store in order to get rid of them. Usually these are big bags. It takes too much work to move small bags around. If you find the right store, they may even let you pick your bag out of their back stock. I know I'd do that if a really discerning customer asked me.

French Onion dip is my poison of choice, and Lays "Baked" chips all seem to hold up to the vigor of dipping...Fritos are a good choice also.

My latest favorite…made by whoever makes Cheesits. They’re thicker than chips so they don’t smash up as easily. I love these things!

corn chips != potato chips
each have their place. fritos and onion dip would suck.
