Trying to hand feed some freeze-dried shrimp....one of them clamped down on my finger and wouldn't let go. I had the turtle about 3 feet over the water before it let go.

My wife had a Sulcata tortois that weighed in at 80+ lbs. at the time. We fed him veges on occasion and made it a conscious effort to never get a finger near his mouth. His name was Turbo. I'd call his name to feed him. He'd stop but could't figure out where the sound was coming from. When he'd spot me and hear me, he'd come over. I was surprised a tortois would respond to a sound.

At that size...a person could lose a finger, or more, easily.
It's not that they are trying to bite you..they just are trying to get the food.
That's a great looking tortoise!

I have been bitten by a 12+" Mountain Boomer (Collard Lizard).

And a couple of rats.

I had a white rat in college. He never bit me.

Steve. You can see the grass is especially worn out along the fence. He would spend all day circuitinig the yard along the fence. He fed mostly on grass, and after a few years the grass started dying out. It seemed it wasn't suited for our climate, elevation, & soil. So we gave him away to some people in Palm Desert. He was a very powerful animal. A friend of my wife had one, which he brought over once for a "play date." His tortois started harrassing Turbo. When Turbo would get tired of it he would charge the other Salcata and knock it rolling.

"knock it rolling"...that's funny. I can picture it happening.

My turtles spend most of the day searching the outer edge for a way out also. If they aren't soaking up the sun...they're looking for an escape. They don't realize how good they have it!
