SCOTUS says NCAA not above the law

I've no problem with compensating scholar athletes so long as they do away with the full ride scholarships.

It is a slippery slope. Yea, when a "star" player is bringing in more fans and the school is making millions MORE off of that one player, he really should get a piece of the pie. What about the multitudes of mostly bench warmers and third string players, do they get paid?

It will almost instantly become a bidding war like the NFL for top players and signing bonuses and only the big schools will have a chance. Alabama already has a training center that is better than most NFL teams. Any player would prefer that facility to a typical school gym and some free weights.

I see both points of view, and I am real glad I am not the one that has to figure out what is fair distribution of money for fans to watch other people play a game with a ball.

The judgement is very limited in scope. It does not say anything about student athlete pay.

https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/supreme-court/supreme-court-says-ncaa-can-t-limit-some-benefits-student-n1271592

WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court ruled unanimously Monday that the National Collegiate Athletic Association went too far in blocking some education-related aid for student athletes, a decision that comes as college athletics struggles with the issue of how to preserve its amateur status.

The court said the NCAA violated antitrust laws when it limited the amount students could receive for musical instruments, scientific equipment, postgraduate scholarships, tutoring, academic awards and paid internships.

The Supreme Court's ruling did not, however, address the contentious issue of whether student athletes can be paid salaries or get other forms of compensation. The NCAA said it would consider this month whether student athletes can be compensated for the use of their names and images, which could allow them to benefit from endorsements and social media marketing.

Pay 'em, but make athletes pay tuition. No more scholarships. Come on, they have been paying Texas athletes for years, and Oklahoma still whips them. There is no income tax here, and state universities don't have to pay income they get (from you name it). I like college sports, and value amateurism, but the Universities crossed a line to make ridiculous profits.

There is no such thing as a "four year ride". Athletic scholarships are year to year.

Ask me how I know.

Football and basketball are the two major revenue sports, period.

Let's do math. I bet the average cost to house, fee and educate a football player is 50k a year, tops. Remember we are not talking the profit, fully burdened rate a normal student pays.

So $50k x 80 = $4M a year for labor. Any D1 school with a heartbeat makes that in food and beer concession sales in one home game. One.

Do $100k a year per player and the number is still minuscule comparing labor to revenue. Tiny.

So, what to do? Clearly there has to be some sort of revenue sharing or image and likeness agreement.

That is a multi-tiered discussion.

What I would insist on: During football season, the players take minimal classes not associated with football. It can be done.

BTW, when was the last time any of you fat f's got in a athletic car wreck every weekend and then had a 20 hour a week job to prepare for the next car wreck and were expected to carry a course load?

Not ever.

For every season a player plays, he gets a full academic year in return, full ride...a football scholarship GI Bill. The person must maintain a B average or lose additional years. Make it hard.

The cruelest part of college athletics is watching the human detritus get cast aside. Give these kids a chance to change their lives without sports. Earning a college degree, earning it, is that opportunity.
