New motto: "Keep Portland Violent"

Quote:
The poll found 74% of the respondents disapprove of the city's handling of the homelessness situation and 68% aren't happy with how protests and riots have been handled

Portland, Oregon, residents surveyed about the city’s downtown said they plan to visit less frequently, mainly citing the homelessness and rioting that has plagued the area in the last year, according to a new poll.

Respondents to the poll commissioned by The Oregonian newspaper used words like "dirty," "trash," "riots" and "unsafe" to describe the heart of the city, which appears to have deteriorated during the coronavirus pandemic and social unrest of the past year.

"There seems in the last year to be this permission to do violence," respondent Laurie Lago, 75, who lives near where the protests have been centered, told The Oregonian. She expressed frustration about the lack of riot-related arrests.

Native Portlander here, with lots of friends and family still there. Their assessment from within is the same as I see as a now-outsider: the city (and not just the city center - it expands far, far into erstwhile lovely neighborhoods) has become a sh!thole.

If Portland was a sports team (we'll use the Blazers since they've always been there) the city's fall would be like the Blazers going from 78-4, sweeping every series on their way to the O'Brien Trophy, to 3-79 the next ... with the same lineup.

It would be heralded, albeit not a positive heralding, as the greatest collapse in sports history. First to worst in an astoundingly rapid fashion.

I used to visit Portland every year. Downtown Portland, no less. The food trucks, VooDoo Doughnut, and Prime restaurant were some of my favorites. It was an annual trip from California to Washington. I would stay in either Wilsonville or Portland on my way to the Mt St Hellens area to shop for 2,000+ Christmas trees. The tree business hit a wall: no more trees. This year, I think I can do it again for the first time in 5 years. So I need to plan a trip back. It's my summer vacay. But serious doubts that the wheels of my rental car will stop anywhere in Oregon now. I'll probably stay in Olympia. I don't fly because I may stay 2 days, 3 days, or 4. It's an adventure to go driving all over Washington looking at tree farms and talking to the shysty bastards who grow the trees.

One my dearest friends owns a Christmas Tree farm just outside of Estacada. Sounds like you're dealing with the wrong growers.

I really don't understand how this is possible and why it isn't cleaned up.

At some point someone needs to show some leadership and get it done.

I deifinitely agree!!! I stay away from the Mossy Rock area. Bad experience. And one guy in Alma Washington. That guy is a nut. My grower is from Chehalis but I told him that I'll buy an entire mountain if he finds one.

Does your friend want new customers? I sell only Noble Fir, Nordman Fir, and if I can find a few Frazier Firs or Silvertip, I'll buy them too. I don't ever buy Douglas Fir and never Turkish Fir. My customers either don't like them, or won't pay more than $20 for one. I average $150-200 per tree on the ground. All come with a wooden stand and water bowl. I'm known for having the best trees and freshest longest lasting ones in my market.

In true Portland style you need to go burn down the business to protest police and racism.

I feel really bad. For most of the Portlanders, except for the feisty little POS who screamed at me that I could be arrested for pumping my own gas.

Right? Exact same. McGarret was a scrawny little dude wearing a reflective vest. I think I laughed though.

I have been to Portland a number of times but I am out of any "vacation" mode for places I have already been.

I like Portland, as a city, Rose Festival in 1985, and the people were terrific. Last time I was there was in 2003 and we had a great time as a family. My Dad lived in Bend in those days so we flew out of Portland and spent two days there before our flight.

My concern for Portland, focused on business owners and their employees, is just how much business has been lost in terms of tourists and direct losses.

The numbers, at least those I can find, are large.

I was visiting Portland on Willamette Valley winery business on average every other month for four years up until the pandemic, and wouldn't hesitate to go back. I guess I've learned over time to avoid the more obvious hotspots in every large city I frequent, for business and for pleasure.

All in all, Portland and its people are vibrant, friendly and just like everybody else trying to make sense of what is happening around them.

Good call. To everyone else thinking of moving or visiting Portland, it's a hellhole, and you should change your plans. Sucks, sucks, sucks. There is nothing here for nice people. Just stay far, far away for your own sanity. Californians, if you are thinking of following the hundreds of thousands of your denizens who are moving up here, well, the Xanadu days are long long gone, so find some other place to spend the windfall profits from your house sale.

Nasty place full of nasty people. Can't recommend it less. Nothing to see here except violence and mayhem and lawlessness.

Run, don't walk from the idea of a peaceful life in Portland, and don't let people of gentle constitution gaze upon the horror that this once magnificent city has become.

(I hear Detroit is nice!)
