A legit flying car

People have been working on this problem for decades. But they might finally have something here.

Well it's about friggin time! I was told back in the 70's that we'd have flying cars. I always thought flying cars were called airplanes though.

Just don't let any of that tech trickle down to any Mustangs.

The move Back the Future is a great trilogy of movies, but they had flying cars in 2015 and the skies full of them.

I notice in the video just crappy background music and not one fact or data point. How fast does it fly? How far can it fly? Is it IFR rated? How many passengers and what is the luggage capacity? How does it perform on the road as a car?

As a kid when I dreamed of a flying car, I envisioned one like our current car, parked at home, and just take off vertically into the sky and fly to where we want, and land at some friends house or a business. That is still just some mega quantum leap in power plant away.

All of the "flying cars" envisoned were not convertable planes. They used some sort of antigrav technology.

Yea, anti-gravity is a few years away. Hopefully Elon Musk can figure it out for us.

The real trick is the Jetsons flying car. It folds up and fits in a briefcase and is light enough to carry with just one hand.

We've had flying cars my entire lifetime.

DOT legal airplanes for use on public roads; now that is another matter.

The only use for a flying car is to be able to drive it to and from an airport. And to have FAA and DOT certs is gonna be a deal breaker.

Flying cars are an insult to aviation and pavement, a lame compromise at best.

I work with a lot of companies trying to figure this out...nothing will happen until autonomy happens and a pilot is not required.

Good luck with the lawsuits.

None of these have much payload or a decent cruise speed. This one is at least certified as LSA.

The average driver on the road is horrible at driving. I can't imagine what will happen once the skies fill with idiots flying. We will all have to have airplane crashing into your house insurance because the idiots not carrying insurance on the flying car.

Until we have idiot proof autopilots for the aircraft it will be a pipe dream.

We own a 2004 Cessna 182T and the cost to keep it is astonishing and something few people would want to fund. Only because we have it for our business is it possible.

Yep. They need runways....the downside.

Any flying car without driver-less/pilot-less VTOL capabilities is just a semi-street legal airplane. You still need an airport, runway, pilot and FAA license.

A pilot-less (autonomous) drone taxi is closer to an actual flying car.

We have enough problems with moms in minivans and teens texting. The last thing we need is death raining down from the skies!

Pretty much. As already stated you'll need FAA certificates to fly it and drive to a local airport to take off and land. Other than saying "We did it!" I don't know how many they expect to sell. Anyone with the financial means to purchase will drive their car to the airport, get in their Cessna/Beech/Piper, fly to their destination and rent a car/Uber on the other end.

It's cool but nothing more than a novelty - and if you get in a *tiny* fender bender on the road you can scratch your flight plans.

Most civil airports have loaner cars for free if you just need to get around a little. Just fill up the airplane at that FBO and drive the car for free.

Amazing what the FBO will give you with the purchase with 300+ bucks in fuel.
