you're going to tell me ....
You're going to tell me you have no Black Cats, no Roman Candles, or Screaming Meemies? Oh, come on man! You don't got no Ladyfingers, buzz bottles, snicker bombs, church burners, finger blasters, gut busters, zippedy-doodas, crap flappers? No whistling bungholes, no spleen splitters, whisker biscuits, honky lighters, Husker Dus, Husker Don'ts, cherry bombs, nipsy dazers, with or without the scooter stick, or one single whistling kitty chaser?

Funny, I knew this was a movie reference, but I couldn't place it. I did a search. I've never seen Joe Dirt. I guess I've probably seen this clip on youtube.
Just reading it, it feels like something that Dan Ackroyd would have done.

Get off my lawn!
|
As a kid in Hawaii about age14, using money from mom, that she got from dad we bought a string of fireworks. We pulled it apart, and blew up every toy, and launched a lot of cans into the the air. Right in the front yard, open daylight, for a week.
I guess that got it out of my system, and I became cheap and frugal when it comes to blowing up my money. I have not spent a penny on fireworks in 40 years, and plan to continue that streak. I just don't get it. I guess at age 15 cars became more interesting and I can waste lots of money on fun cars.

In So Cal as a kid we had fireworks stands everywhere.
In the 70s Families would all light fireworks in front of their homes. Firework stands haven't been around for a few decades where I have lived. 1. Too much dry grass and chance of fires. 2. Respect for wounded warriors with PTSD. 3. Concern for pets traumatized by the noise too. |

A while back, my next door neighbor asked me if I knew anyone she could get fireworks from for her 13 year old son. I replied " I'll call my friend Stumpy..."
She failed to get the irony....

I bet I've driven by 200 fireworks places this week alone. From the stand, to large air conditioned warehouses. My interest is gone now.
When I was around 27-28yrs we had one hellava 4th. We (the neighbors) pooled money together and bought a massive amount of fireworks. I remember we had to epoxy the the base back onto one of the cannons mid show. Close call when it failed. There was a noticeable hole in the asphalt on the street until they repaved. Our Rottweiler, not agressive, very passive, loved roman candles. He'd catch them. I haven't bought fireworks since.

Kiddo (8yo) loves those 3' long sparklers. Otherwise I'd rather light benjamins on fire than buy that stuff.
Amazing that I grew up in MI where exotic things were illegal (every ninth grader's dream "bro, I'm heading to IN - you need something?") and usually the landscape was pretty fireproof. Now I'm in New Mexico where even a warm fart will start a forest fire and everything is legal...

when we first moved back to Houston, I had a couple of years where we did some fireworks. Not so much now.
When we do buy them, we only buy the Mortar Tubes with 3-4 charges per shot. I've tried to get the neighborhood association to get a professional to setup in the main lake. Probably would get most of the people to stop shooting them off.

I think, like dinosaurs, fireworks are really neat to kids. As I grew older I am still fascinated by dinosaurs, but not so much fireworks. I have seem some amazing fireworks shows, and enjoyed them. Somehow, driving to a spot to get a good view of the show and sitting in the hot evening air just does not appeal much to me.

Is Joe Dirt worth watching?
Fireworks were a great kid thing here on the farm. We actually had a good system to let the kids have fun without getting scars. I also would bring fireworks back from States that sell real fireworks. There was a place in South Carolina that sold fireworks you could have used against Fort Sumter. It has been at least ten years since we have lit off anything.

Last time I used any fireworks was maybe 10 years ago. Wasn't on the 4th of july either. Flock of starlings had decided that a good roost was a cedar tree near my driveway. Every morning, a load of starling krap to hose away.
Then I remembered a pack of firecrackers a friend had given me years before. I waited until dark, when they were all roosted...set one off under the tree. Did that for two nights...they didn't come back. Generally, I think the big professional displays are beautiful. But a-holes who love to set them off in quiet neighborhoods when the fire danger is high? Yeah...a-holes.
