Windows 10 or wait for 11?
My current desktop is running Vista. I love it. It is bulletproof. I have all the software I need and they don't require subscriptions (a la Office...). I still have an active antivirus.
Unfortunately my browsers are getting out dated and it is getting time to buy a new machine. I don't want Apple. I don't want to fool with Linux and other alternative operating systems. Win 10 pro seems to work well for my office computer but I know 11 is coming. I refuse to buy a computer with a new operating system (learned my lesson when I got Windows 95 the first month it came out ![]() So, do I hold out for 11 to be out for a year and pray it isn't a Windows 8 style disaster or do I get 10 while I still can? Whadda ya think?

I have 11 on my laptop, haven't used it a ton, but it seems fine so far, it's not as big of a change as 3.x to 95, 9x to XP, or 7 to 8, those had major driver model changes.
It should be a free upgrade if getting something with 10 on it now, so I don't know that waiting or not would really matter, but it does look like it will require a processor no more than 2 generations or so old because of security concerns, so can't just buy a super old model of something and be certain it'll work.

WINDOZ 11 requires a late model CPU CHIP
Core 8xxx or later 11 will not run on a vista era chip needs a security chip handshake you do NOT have so just D/L 10 FROM MS OFFICIAL SITE click LATER when it asks about a lic just load 10 with out a lic you get a water mark on the lower right screen that says activate do not click on it unless you want to make bill gates richer you windoz 10 will work as well as windoz 10 does |

Win 10 won't run programs for earlier OS systems.
(still have a ton of them on CD/DVD which I paid big buck$ for and want to use: Games/CAD/design/etc but can't access.) Even the Windows emulators fail after much haxx. Grandma couldn't even start. I so wanted to dive into MSFS2020 but then the company yanked my chain so hard with bait-n-switch. It soured the experience. At what point, who decided the whip was better policy than the carrot? They literally had to force consumers to switch to Win10.

From what I've read, 11 will be a free upgrade for 10 users.

I have a fairly new laptop that came with Windows 10. Now it’s giving me a message that Windows 11 is ready to be downloaded for free (as mentioned above). What is the consensus on version 11? Do those who have it like it?

I have Win 11 Pro on the computer I am typing this on. It was upgraded from 10 Pro. After a few weeks, I like it. The menus are moved around some. Nothing too drastic.
The OS is not the difference for Office. The latest Office 365 is just a subscription based software like the latest Photoshop. If you want to have the latest version of the office programs, bend over and pay for the subscription. My company has two full subscriptions, one for me one for my partner. All the Office programs, and the only ones used all the time are Outlook, and One Drive. One Drive has been great for delivering out customer files. Outlook for email is a solid program. I can access the same email from any of the three computers, and my iPhone at any time and it is always synced up, as are the contacts. Office costs up 12 bucks per month for each of us. Each of us has family members with their email accounts on our domain for no extra cost.

We have 10 Home as well as Word and Excel. Downloading 11 won’t mess up those, will it. Thanks.

Do it. The start menu placement, seemingly inconsequential change .. but yeah, it's good. Compatibility, W11 had no problems running the ancient Canon print driver. Getting rid of Cortana, yes. Teams integration, Android, easier transitions between monitor, laptop etc etc |

Stay away from W11. Roll over to a user-friendly distro of linux instead.

Is it really a free upgrade or a trial version, with watermarks, and the inability to customize features?
I once did the “free” upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 10. I lost my wallpaper and was unable to customize anything. To make matters worse, I had an annoying watermark and constant pop ups to pay for the full version. Even more frustrating, it would not uninstall and revert to my original Windows version. This is where Apple iOS are great. Free upgrades as long as the hardware can keep up.

If your Win 10 was fully licensed, Win 11 is free and customizable.
Apple upgrades often just orphans older computers, and not that old of computers. I have a 10 year old computer that I keep running for a few of the software packages that are silly expensive, and still function fine. That computer is rather slow after using my new monster computer, but fully functional. It does not have the CPU needed for Win 11, so I guess in a few years when Win 10 is no longer supported it will be an 12 or 13 year old orphan. If it still works, I will still use it until the hardware dies. The hard drives themselves are mirrored, and when one drive dies, I just slap in a new drive and let it rebuild.

It is the OS that was installed on a new laptop. So I suspect it will be free. I’ll monitor this thread to see the consensus of the group whether or not it is worth upgrading to.

I just bought a new asus laptop with windows 10 and free 11 download. It is amazing and I think cleaner the way the icons are located. It is the fastest laptop I have ever owned . Best OS I have ever had. Bought my Asus on Amazon and has backlit keyboard which is fantastic for old eyes, touchscreen, ssd hard drive so very fast. Super quick finger print start!! So fast with windows 11. Amazing!!

I put 11 on my 10 year old Dell laptop. They say it will not work on old hardware but its just a couple clicks during install to get around that. Not sure it is better than 10 but it is not worse for sure. Seems fast enough. I normally use linux but if needed I could get used to 11.

I hate Apple
I like 10, with classic shell start menu, cause I hate fancy updates to start menu. And 11 looks like the main feature is they made it more like Apple and moved the start menu hard no.

We use Win 11 Pro because the programs we pay big bucks to license specify Win 10 Professional or above. They use hardware resources, and require CUDA cores of the video cards so we use a pair of NIVDIA cards. There is no substitute for Windows in the aerial photography and mapping world. And I built my machine to fit my specs and not some velvet collar of Apple designs.
Linux and Apple have their places. My wife would fight to the death to keep her iPad, she loves it. She still has to use my Win 10 laptop once or twice per month for some internet tasks.
