country living
One of the things that counters the "bad" about country living (septic, well, last to get power back when hurricanes come, no food delivery, 15 minute drive to nearest groceries/gas etc) is the cool stuff living out here with you.
Just came in from letting dog out, had a pair of screech owls squawkin' away up in one of my trees. |

That's why you get acreage in town. We have about 8 acres of woods with about 300ft of a creek and about 100ft on the river across the road. Lots of deer, turkey, hawks, owls and even bald eagles around here.
Less than a mile to numerous stores and less than 5min to Lowe's, Walmart, Kroger's etc... Less than 15minutes to work. Food delivery is available as well. We have a propane tank, a well and a septic system. Actually, we go through about 6cords of wood to heat the house in the winter. We deer hunt here if it's archery and we fish. It's country living in town. It's also funny when I shoot clays with the guys at their places. I'm the city boy but beats out the the country boys. Sometimes it makes them upset... lol Whatever...

I really don’t understand why you would want to live on an acreage in town.
This seems analogous to those that go ‘camping’ in a parking lot in the forest 25’ from some stranger and his kids / generator / stereo… to get away from civilization… We live 15 minutes from town or 25 minutes from a city of 1.25 million. Our closest neighbour is 3/4 of a mile away. We have a resident moose who swims in our pond, lots of deer, birds, elk, etc. This is country living. If you can hear other people, you are doing it wrong.

We're about 2 miles from our downtown comprised of a mexican restaurant, general store, gas pumps, and post office. 12 miles from a town of around 20K, 25 minutes from a town of around 150K, and 45 minutes from a city of around 1.5M. We enjoy rabbits, hawks & other birds, turkeys, deer, an occasional bob car & mt. lion, etc. Altitude is 3.5K ft., so we get snow a couple of times a winter and usually in the 90s during the warmest parts of the year. I don't think I'd trade it for anything.

My old house was right on the edge of town. Close enough in that I could walk to the grocery store, far enough out that I didn’t have to pick up after my dogs.
Wouldn’t trade it for the new house in the country though.

Remember your definitions:
If you can stand naked in your front yard and no one can see you, that's country. If you stand naked in your front yard and someone calls the cops, that's suburban. If you stand naked in your front yard and nobody gives a damn, that's urban. My nearest neighbors are more than a quarter mile away and there are trees in between. 10 minutes to the small town where we do 90% of our business. Food delivery is something we never thought of. When the Purolator truck drops stuff off, we don't have to worry about porch pirates. ![]() Best Les

I moved into a pretty rural area (my former boy scout camp) three decades ago ... those days are long gone... development. Still have woods & a pond behind my house (not mine), and lots of critters... but totally changed.

I'm digging the country living. Yesterday evening I saw a great horned owl sitting on a post 30-40' outside of the kitchen window. It was harassed by a mocking bird and a couple of other birds until it flew off. I've seen a skunk a couple of times, deer, deer tracks and skat, snakes a tarantula, and lately I've been hearing "giant cicadas" which have a very different sound to the cicadas that I've know everyplace else that I lived. I've got 2 or maybe 3 neighbors that are about 1/8 mile east and north. West I've got nothing for at least a mile or two. South is I-10.
We've been really lucky with our power so far. We've had minimal outages. < knock on wood >

Country living is great I'm sure. Make sure you can get good medical care somewhere.
When you get old you spend half your life in a Dr. office. |

I could NEVER live in a city, town or suburb again. I still feel like a free American where I live and can shoot, ride dirt bikes/snowmobiles/atv's, fly airplanes, have bonfires, swim/fish in pond etc. I can't imagine living someplace where I could not even park certain types of vehicles in my own damn driveway.
I am about 20 minutes from town where I work that has a Walmart and some restaurants, about 30 minutes from two towns with Menards/Lowes and about 45 minutes from Toledo, Ohio. In my college years I did live in the city for about 4 years but my wife and I both grew up in similar rural locations and would not trade rural life for anything. Hopefully we are far enough away that suburban or urban creep will never affect us. ![]()

Nothing like walking out to, and swimming in the pool naked, with no neighbors, no passing cars to see...it irritates me when we get traffic on our road.

Same here... On the rare occasion we hear a car go by late at night we listen to be sure it kept going. I have gone outside with a shotgun in my underwear a couple times over the years when we heard a car that sounded like it slowed down near our house.

I was driving out yesterday morning and a large hawk (now exactly sure which breed) flew about 30 feet in front of me at about 10ft above the ground followed by two Mocking birds just stuck on the hawks six. It looked like two Spitfires on a German Dornier ![]() I'm in here, about 15 minutes from town and 30 minutes from the Patuxent River Naval Base. ![]()

there would have to be a system in place to get you to places as needed.
there is a guy that has a GREAT secluded property. stunning..simply stunning. wife passed, and he is alone. he is losing his vision and needs dialysis. he cant drive anymore. APS found him on death's door. he was trying to use UBER for awhile, and a few drivers never showed up. a team of nurses were dispatched and they really had to jump thru a few hoops to get the gentleman the help he needed. it took a village. my wife told me about the property, and i said, "hmm..i wonder if he has wild hogs" i almost slept on the couch that night. ![]() i would have a sniper's perch in the barn.

Our closest town with a grocery store is 10 miles east. THey have a grocery store, Walmart, couple FLAPS, etc.... That town has a population of ~3600 and is the county seat which is nice because it means that if I need to go to some sort of county office, it's probably there. There's a town about 4 miles west. The population of that town is ~2100. The county that we're in has a population of almost 21k people in an area of almost 1000 square miles. When I go outside at night, I can see the Milky Way. If I'm driving and pass a car going the other direction or someone drives by when I'm getting the mail or mowing, many/most will wave. We are about 85 miles from downtown Houston. We go shopping in Houston every 2-3 weeks.

Would love to live on an acreage as long as it was self contained, solar, wind, generator, etc. I think 20 minutes away from a city would be perfect. Too bad land prices are insane here.
