That SUX!

RNajarian 08-10-2023 04:15 PM

Rockfan4,

Define “stud.”

What likely happened was the implant is what we call a screw retained implant meaning there is a fixture which has integrated into the bone. Then the crown gets screwed into that fixture and that’s what you see in the mouth. So maybe what broke was that screw that went into the fixture that is intern imbedded in the bone.

Hopefully that is the issue because sometimes they can use an ultrasonic instrument. The vibrations sometimes cause the screw to work its way out and then all you need to do is replace the screw put the crown back on and you’re finished. In a perfect world, it takes less than an hour.

If the screw is broken inside the fixture and cannot be removed, then they are going to need to remove the implant. Not a fun job, but it does happen.

And as for your wife’s dinner, depending on how the procedure goes for on Tuesday, I would play Red Lobster by ear.

Good Luck

rockfan4 08-10-2023 04:28 PM

Well, I haven't poked my head in there, but my understanding from the way she explained it, it would be that metal piece in the middle of this picture. Apparently it snapped, half is still in the implant, the other half was in the replacement tooth. Her gum has healed over and they'll have to cut that to get to the top of it.

That's what we're worried about.

This morning, tomorrow changed to showers with the possibility of thundershowers in the late morning. My wife is the hay judge so she suggested we turn it this morning, then again at noon to see if we could get it in after supper. By three o'clock, she was watching the clouds building in the west and suggested we try to get it before supper. I raked up the hay at 3:30, we hooked up the baler at 4 and started in. By 4:45 the first drops fell. We had it (79 bales of decent hay) in the barn by 5:15. Not bad for a couple of old folks.
Ever since Environment Canada got rid of their local forecasters and started doing a computer modeled regional forecast, their ability to accurately predict our local weather has gone right down the toilet. Right now we have thundershowers.
Ah the fun of hobby farming.

Nice! There's about 15 acres next to the house that the previous owners kept. They let a lady that lives nearby "harvest" the hay. They own the land and have an agricultural tax rating so the taxes are practically free. They don't even have to deal with the hay since the lady can have it for free if she does the work. It's a pretty good deal for them. The last 2 summers she's gotten a pretty sad return because of our extra dry weather. I think she's been harvesting trying to balance the amount of hay that she gets with the fire risk.

They still haven't dug out the broken piece of the stud from the implant, that's what they're trying Tuesday. Hopefully more than trying to cut a slot in the top with a dremel and taking a screw driver to it, that sounds like something I would do. Supposedly they have a extractor tool to try, and if that doesn't work, they have to cut her jaw, remove the implant, wait for it to heal, and then do the whole thing over again. That sounds like B.S. to me.

Happy Birthday to the missus!

That must have been a hell of a chip!

Holy carp! It's bad enough having a broken stud in a mechanical situation. I would NOT want to have to futz with one in someone's mouth.

I wonder if he made a trip to the nearest Snap-On truck. LOL!

Best wishes to the missus getting her mouth fixed. Hopefully, this is free. I can't imagine anything but a material defect or possibly (pretty unlikely) an installation issue having caused a broken stud.

Maui fires, Alaskas floods, and Australian Fire tornados

https://www.smithsonianmag.com/science-nature/the-worlds-first-wildfire-tornado-blazed-a-path-of-destruction-through-australia-180982309/

Quote:

here was no name for the thing Tom Bates captured on video at the height of the notorious Australian bush fire season of 2002-2003. Prior to that sweltering afternoon, there was no such thing as “pyro-tornadogenesis,” because such a phenomenon—a tornado generated by a wildfire—was not known to occur on planet Earth. Wildfires in both hemispheres often whip up small twisters known as fire whirls, but as impressive as they are to behold, and as dangerous as they are to be near, they are relatively small and short-lived events—more like dust devils than full-blown cyclones. What Bates saw and filmed from a suburban rugby pitch just outside Canberra, in southeast Australia, was different. It occurred during a historic week of lightning-caused fires that killed 4 people, injured more than 400, and destroyed 500 homes west of Australia’s capital city.

On January 18, Bates and his neighbors in the Kambah neighborhood, about five miles southwest of downtown, were on high alert because local fires had advanced to within a mile and a half of their neighborhood. Looking northward that afternoon, toward the flames, Bates observed a large funnel cloud over Mount Arawang, one of several low, tree-covered peaks in the area that are laced with walking trails and surrounded by suburban homes.

Tornadoes are not unheard of in the region, but this one appeared to be rising up out of the fire itself, like an atmospheric Balrog. It was 4 in the afternoon, the ambient temperature was nearly 100 degrees Fahrenheit, and the air was so dark with smoke that it appeared to be nighttime. The year 2003 was before smartphones became widespread, but Bates had the presence of mind to get his video camera and record what would come to be a new kind of fire. “I’ve never in my life seen anything like it,” we hear Bates say as the funnel takes shape above the burning mountain. He struggles to describe what he is seeing, not because he lacks the words, but because no Earthling has ever witnessed what he is witnessing now: “Holy ****… Holy mackerel. It’s a big fireball. It’s gotta be rippin’ poor bastards’ houses up there.” Then, right before our eyes, Mount Arawang appears to detonate. The blinding flash, combined with the funnel cloud whirling above it, gives the impression of a nuclear blast. “Holy Jeezus,” Bates gasps. “This is bad news. It’s like a big fireball tornado.”

It is now clear that this monstrous thing, which Bates has just named, is headed directly toward him. Australians seem to have a gift for understatement, and, as the wind begins to hiss and roar through the camera mic, we hear Bates say, “This is rather frightening.” A moment later, tin roofing and other debris from the homes surrounding Mount Arawang begin clattering to earth all around him. Sticks and gravel are now flying in horizontal gusts. “I’m getting pelted with stuff. It’s stinging the daylights out of me,” he says, shortly before the video ends. “It’s just like being sandblasted.”
Unfortunately, the quality of the video is pretty low due to low light and 20 years of tech that isn't there yet, but I have a good imagination and can imagine a fire tornado. It's a pretty horrific thing to imagine. Queue a B-movie on the sci-fi channel.

Meth?

Por_sha911 08-14-2023 06:24 PM

Initially I thought meth but from the looks of the fireball color and plume, I'm wondering if someone was mixing fertilizer and fuel oil.

Wow, the main house was reduced to a pit that used to be a basement. It looks like the 2 homes on either side were half blown up and then the other half was destroyed by fire.

That's a tragedy. 5 dead, 3 in the hospital with 1 still critical, and 3 families have lost their homes and all possessions.

A930Rocket 08-15-2023 06:20 PM

I just read it was reported that the homeowner was having water heater problems. Water doesn’t explode, so it has to be gas.

There were two or three people in the house at the time.

If it was the gas to the water heater leaking, it makes you wonder how long the problem was going on. The gas sinks to the ground, which is why water heaters are raised at least 18 inches above the ground. How does enough gas accumulate to explode?

Maybe the water heater was not working but the gas kept running and the source of the ignition with something else? Seems like you would smell it.

rockfan4 08-15-2023 06:54 PM

Tooth implant update:
They got the broken piece out. The implant is solid in her jaw, not loose. However, the doc was concerned about bone loss around the implant, so he added some bone graft material to the area and stitched up her gum. That's got to sit for 4 months, and then he's going to check it again. If the graft works and the jawbone is built up to his satisfaction, he'll put the stud or post back in. If not, he will have to remove the implant, put in more bone graft material, wait for it to all heal again, and then start over.

Someone asked if this repair was free. No, not a chance.

I would have tried JB Weld.

Back in college, a 3 story apt. building was absolutely leveled to rubble (and a few other buildings severely damaged (condemmed), including the one I had just moved out of. A gas leak in the laundry room in the basement .... and some had even smelled the gas earlier. Utter devastation .... hard to believe only one fatality in the 4am explosion that I heard miles away.... woke me up.

Powerboat racer/builder Reggie Fountain owned the apt. complex and had a "bachelor pad" below my apt. but he was never there .... except to ask me to turn down my stereo one Aug. afternoon ;).

Water heaters can explode even if they are electric. They have a pressure limiting valve. I don't know if they have another layer of safety specifically for over-pressure, but if they over heat and the pressure limiting valve fails, they can explode in spectacular fashion. I'm not saying that's what that was, but it is possible.

I'm glad the removal worked without having to go to extremes. I'm surprised that there was a bone issue. Sure, I didn't really expect the work to be free, but it certainly seems like a broken stud (while eating chips) had to have been either a material defect or installation issue. Hopefully, the graft from the work is adequate and she gets a tooth installed next go-round.

Been there, done that. Tooth #30 was an implant that had been in place for over 10 years. Bone loss around the implant necessitated removing the implant before it broke off. It was a horrible surgery, and they did bone graft, and stitching gum tissue is not easy or comfortable recovery.

The surgeon told me to no eat anything solid for a day at least, and suggested ice cream with no chocolate chips or nuts or additives. Just straight vanilla or chocolate. I asked him for a prescription, and he laughed, and said it is an over the counter item. :)
I stopped at the local ice cream store and bough some vanilla, but I told my wife it was my medicine, and only food for a day. To this day we call any ice cream medicine. :)

AFAIK the pressure valve is the only safety and if it fails, a WH will explode. It usually will look like a Estes Rocket. The video is showing a combustible substance (ie natural or propane gas).

Yesterday I stopped by the hardware store for two items: self adhesive strips for the tub and a hitch pin for the drawbar of the tractor. I had a WTF moment when I looked at the slip. The steel hitch pin, with a pivoting handle on top and a retaining pin in the bottom, captured by a light chain, was$8.99.
A pack of 8 self adhesive non skid strips in a cardboard sleeve was$10.99.
On the surface, you might say: safety costs. On the other hand, you'd better not have your loaded manure spreader come loose and head on to a family in their big RV.
How in the heck can 8 pieces of plastic cost 20% more than an 8 inch steel pin?
I just shook my head.

$33.00

I had the same thought you did - 'Seems to be a discrepancy'.
