I got my mother's day present today.
We went to visit the granddaughter. My wife walks in first with her arms open wide for a hug, the granddaughter ducks the arm, moves past her and hugs me. |

I got this pic of my youngest grandson attacking the net. Then I giggled when I saw how tiny his legs looked. Then again he is only 7.The kid is ALL HEART!

This is what winning the genetics lottery looks like. Mikaela is the best alpine skier in the USA , she's a dolly and is very well spoken during interviews.

So, I went out for a bicycle ride Saturday. Hot, humid and windy so perfect conditions.
I took my usual break for a PBJ bagel and water at the local shop when another boomer took the opportunity to "suggest" that maybe riding in such conditions isn't the smartest choice. Rather than spitting in his eye I chose to try and explain "why" I do like I do. Fast forward to what I did after getting home. I sat with my post ride beverage and gathered my thoughts on the question. This is what I came up with. Please forgive the obvious self-indulgence. There is an enormous difference between living in the world rather than just on it. It is the difference between reading about someone else’s life and actually living your own life. Our lives are largely lived on the inside of ourselves and sadly, mostly taking some very important things for granted. The gift of mobility is one the things we take for granted. I know I did. Why not? It’s not something we think about. We learn to do it by the time we’re one year old and really there is no reason to think about it afterwards. Right? That’s natural. Until you’re blessed with an incident that makes you think about it. What if you couldn’t walk? Just imagine all of the things you couldn’t do. And what if your arms are impaired as well? What then? I’ve had the rare privilege and, perhaps, what might be considered an unfair advantage over many people. I’ve had the experience of losing my mobility for a significant time and then was gifted by regaining it. So, I know what it feels like to be bed ridden. I still can’t run or ski, skate, surf or even walk steadily. But by some miracle I can peddle a bicycle. I celebrate the gift I was given by riding my bicycle everywhere I can. On my bicycle my senses are energized with the reality of being alive. The feel of my leg muscles as they push over the top of my pedal stroke is a palpable reminder that I am moving by my own power, by the force of my own will. My legs are like pistons and my desire is the spark firing them. The push of the handlebars against my hands as the bike leaps forward in response to that pedal stroke makes me feel powerful like when I was a younger me. The air itself is a huge part of my experience. I can almost lean upon it, and it feels as much a part of me as my own skin. The differences in temperature engage me intimately as I move through shadow into light and back again. Fragrances of trees, flowers and grass fill my head and swirl around as though I were lying in a meadow instead of floating through the scenery. And for all of the speed of their passage, their impact on my mind is all the more acute. This is what the gift of mobility brings to my life. I would wish everyone to know such moments. And this is one of the powerful motivators that compels me to keep riding and doing other things that most people take for granted. This is how ego is involved. Whenever someone tells me that my continuing struggle against my handicap has inspired them in some way, I am fueled even more so to keep on truckin.’ |
Wow. A beautifully artistic expression of a deep thought. There is so much we take for granted and assume will always be there: our health, a spouse, and even our life itself.
I like to regularly challenge my wife and myself with the question: "What are you thankful for?" |
What a great read and thought. All true !!!

Free!
I found someone giving away a hole in the water to throw money into on my bike ride around the 'hood this morning.
My wife is SOOOOOOOO glad I don't own a pickup truck now. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1687803485.JPG |
In a parking lot this morning I saw a sticker in a Subaru window that read, " I (heart) Salty Dykes". My wife felt obliged to clarify that it refers to earthen structures which protect seaside marshlands fron being inundated by high tides.

So I got on an American Airlines flight Monday and was shocked at what was coming out of the air ducting. Of all of the flights flying for business, CUS and abroad, i’ve never seen anything like this. Once in Australia they ground crew came in and sprayed, read fumigated, for flys. Covid Spray? yuk-yuk-yuk Even the Crew had never seen anything like it and were taking pictures.

^^^ It happens to me on every hot summer day flight. It's just the a/c.
Some days it's worse than others. |

You sir, are a badass! If I end up half the man that you are, I'll be doing pretty good. Although since you are a bit vertically challenged, for me to end up half the man that you are I'd have to be sawed in half by a magician, twice. :D |

I'd love one of these but carrera red like my boxster, but not $5000 worth of "love". https://www.porschereading.co.uk/bin...74d3/image.jpg I'd be perfectly happy with a seat like yours or out of my old '88 similarly converted. |

I thought this was pretty impressive. I don't know for sure that the guy is doing it "right" but I don't think he's doing it wrong. I think this porch will last another 100+ years.

I'm calling this a win and done.
I will admit the end end grain could be a lot better but I find I just don't have the patience to deal with the small details like that. It doesn't show as it's up against some closet folding doors anyways. At least the top looks presentable now. Here's the 'Before' shot: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1688857279.JPG And the 'After' shot: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1688857350.JPG My wife has yet to pass judgement on it. :D |
That's lovely wood you've got there. Guys are always wanting to show folks their wood. I suppose if my wood was that nice, I'd be sending pics of my wood to everyone.

Trying to Outguess Mother Nature
Yesterday AM, Environment Canada (our National weather service) forecast three days of hot sunny weather. We make hay for our four equines, so I dropped the small field in front of the house. I figured it would give us about 70 bales. Not a lot, but a start on the 600 required to get them through the winter. This morning, tomorrow changed to showers with the possibility of thundershowers in the late morning. My wife is the hay judge so she suggested we turn it this morning, then again at noon to see if we could get it in after supper. By three o'clock, she was watching the clouds building in the west and suggested we try to get it before supper. I raked up the hay at 3:30, we hooked up the baler at 4 and started in. By 4:45 the first drops fell. We had it (79 bales of decent hay) in the barn by 5:15. Not bad for a couple of old folks.
Ever since Environment Canada got rid of their local forecasters and started doing a computer modeled regional forecast, their ability to accurately predict our local weather has gone right down the toilet. Right now we have thundershowers. Ah the fun of hobby farming. Best Les |
Remember the girl from Jurassic Park? Ariana Richards? She's a painter now and some of her renderings are really good.

Unusual find.
This afternoon I was cultivating a piece of ground which had been plowed for re-seeding. As I was passing down the length of the field a spot of the white caught my eye. As I could see it was spherical, I wondered if it might be an eggshell. Then I could see it was covered with dimples. I stopped and picked up...a golf ball. I haven't played golf in decades. My neighbors don't play. The nearest fields are hay fields. The nearest golf course is 12 km. away. Either someone has a HECK of a drive or some bird got disappointed with the lunch it stole. You just never know. Best Les |

My wife's birthday is Sunday.
She has to work Sunday. She likes Red Lobster. She is off next Tuesday. I got one of those letters for a free dinner if you listen to our sales pitch at - ta da - Red Lobster, next Tuesday. This counts as taking her out for her birthday, right? Only hitch in the plan. She has a dentist appointment next Tuesday. She has a tooth implant, went to the dentist a while ago, he futzed with it, and the stud broke a day or two later when she was eating potato chips. They still haven't dug out the broken piece of the stud from the implant, that's what they're trying Tuesday. Hopefully more than trying to cut a slot in the top with a dremel and taking a screw driver to it, that sounds like something I would do. Supposedly they have a extractor tool to try, and if that doesn't work, they have to cut her jaw, remove the implant, wait for it to heal, and then do the whole thing over again. That sounds like B.S. to me. |
