This week on the farm

On our property the house and barn are close to the west line. A neighbor has a herd of beef cattle pastured in the field and old orchard he rents to the west. Last weekend we had a lot of rain and south east winds, but when the wind shifted back to the west, I could sense a problem.
At first I thought some critter had crawled under the barn and died. Then I realized the smell was coming from the old orchard. It was pretty bad so I thought i'd better investigate. It only took a few minutes to locate the carcass. One of the beef cows had died, maybe a week before and was well past the sell by date. I called the neighbor, comiserated on the loss of the animal. That afternoon I could hear the sound of his power saw as he cleared a path into the beast. He burried it in short order.
Ah, the joys of livestock.

They can just bury a big animal like that? here it must be disposed off by specialized service for animal carcasses.. They can cause ground water pollution

140 euro ex VAT for a horse or cow

Electric car batteries is one of the reasons why I hold onto Caterpillar stock. Those batteries aren't going to bury themselves.

Stijn, This is a rural area. The nearest residence (aside from ours)is 500 meters away.
Also the ground here is clay and basically encapsulates the carcass. I can count more than a half dozen burials of horses or cattle on 12 hectares here over a 45 year period.

Yep. just bury mem on site. When we had cattle that's what you did. Only thing is that you have to have the equipment to dig the hole and pick up the carcass. Horses, Cows, wide pigs....
In my younger years a buddys dad had a dairy farm/ One night and electrical storm came and zapped 4 cows. So we were tasked to dig the hole drag them to the hole and bury them. The key is to get them before they start swelling up. Well the last one beat us to the punch. Here are 2 kno theads and a 40 horse Massy Ferguson, and yes we were mud riding also in the edge of the ponds. I was driving and it cam to getting to the last carcass. Backed up to this swollen mess. Got too close and he said to pull forward. He was sitting on the fender, foot slipped and off he clutch and he went landing right on that swollen cow. To this day when we see each other it still gives us a laugh.

Help, my feet are being strangled.

Socks these days are so small. I guess with fairly much everything made in China the manufactures measure their feet and say that's how big a sock should be. Also less materials go into making a tiny sock.

Even the locally made socks are small. Probably copying the Chinese made ones. I've seen comfort fit and circulation socks, but these strangle my feet too.

I feel that if your socks are too tight you aren't going to get that good easy blood flow down your legs and through your feet that you need for good health.

Or am I going mad over thinking this.

HobieMarty 10-01-2021 12:39 PM

I can see how tight socks could cause circulation issues in feet, and tight socks are just plain out uncomfortable. I am on my feet all day at work and I wear work socks by Dickies. They are thick and comfy. If you are on your feet all day like I am, having good fitting comfy socks are just as important as having comfy shoes.
As far as my work shoes go, I wear a slip on low hiker composite toe shoe made by Keen and I put some extra arch supports in them.
Wear the proper equipment needed to take care of your feet and you will definitely feel better after a long work day.

Actually, tight socks are not a bad thing. Our resident foot guy, Tobra, recommends support socks for folks that sit all day or are on their feet all day. Support socks are tight and are supposed to help with circulation. I think the deal is that if you stand all day or you are relatively inactive all day, it can be tough for fluids to come back up, and the tight support socks help with that.

I will say that I HATE if my toes feel like they are in bondage. The support socks are tight around your calves, but not around your toes.

I also tend to buy shoes with wide, roomy toe boxes. I want to be able to wiggle my toes while wearing shoes.

Wanna know what doesn't strangle your feet? Going barefoot. Lets your lower digits breathe and lowers the chances of toe jam. Also lessens the smell. Same benefits of going commando. :D

On a serious note though, I rarely wear shoes so don't do socks unless it's winter. Then I wear wool socks I knit myself (don't judge). I make them to fit me since I have high insteps which cause normal socks to wear very tight across the top of my foot. It's not only uncomfortable but also painful. Also one of the reasons why I can't do normal shoes and am barefoot 10 months out of the year.

Bill Douglas 10-01-2021 02:52 PM

thanks for all the foot/sock info guys. Maybe I'm being a bit OCD but the only socks I feel comfortable wearing are old stretched out socks that are ready to die.

I don’t think this fits in the random picture or transportation threads, but having lived in the work apartment for four months, it’s really wearing me down. The neighbor upstairs is big foot on steroids and apparently deaf, because he shouts and has the TV up full blast.

And then to put icing on the cake, he parks a car long-term at my front door, while there are two open spots to the left of his Toyota.

The two parking spots, to the right of his white car, are handicap spots

The neighbors say he’s a psychopath, so it’s not worth it getting into it with him. That said, I keep telling myself it’s just four nights a week….

Flatbutt-ettes first born (in all black) playing for the Phantoms peewees. He's yet to draw his first trip to the sin bin so this didn't fit in the other hockey thread. BTW he's 7 yo, reads at a 7th grade level and is into science. I'm so proud of this kid.

Psyco? I have one living next door to me, but this one is slick, he is a lying, social path, and a psyco path, he married a mentally disturbed woman, and both dont work, they get money from the govt and mommy and daddy to play house. They are bad news, and dangerous. I one upped you on that, and yes I watch em and have my phone ready for 911 if this clown flipps. Its the ones that stare at you for a long time and not talk, are the ones you better be prepped for. Never confront a social-psycopath...:(

Call the cops on his ass.
Say you saw somebody with a handicap prevented from parking there, and that they had to park away and then wheel chair their way up to where they wanted to go
and it upsets you to see their struggle.

They will tow his ass for free (to you)

There's nothing that grinds my gears more then people who park on handicap spots without a valid reason.

Flew from Joplin, MO to Ohare Thursday and liked the stewardess.

Close to my age. Easy to look at and friendly. I'm just as pleasant as I can be and she notices.

I'm thinking I need to meet a lady like that around home.

On the way out of the jet she puts her hand on my shoulder at the door and says in an endearing way, "You remind me of my father".

Please just kill me.

svandamme 12-04-2021 04:55 AM

A GF from 40 years ago contacted me on Faceplant. (she found me through a mutual friend)
She was really cute at 16 and her "current" profile pic looked good.

We met up for a coffee and guess what, I barely recognised her.
She's about 5 foot tall and the years haven't been kind - Morbidly obese with "grandma wings". :(

Just found out last week, the white car belongs to the girl living on the right side unit, upstairs. She has a handicap parking spot in front of her door, so she parks two doors down, in front of my work apartment.

After dealing with work apartment bull*****, I now park in the handicap spots without a worry.
