my Chopsticks.
 

i picked these up a few years ago. cheap "titanium" chopsticks. for starters, i seriously doubt they are pure titanium. no way. too inexpensive and they have more heft than what i expect Ti sticks to have. my friend has expensive ones and they are lighter.

having said that, i have been using chopsticks all my life. i used them before i ever grabbed a fork. (hands > spoon > chopsticks > fork - probably) i like heft. i have a guy that makes custom Ti chopsticks and he charges $60. maybe someday. his have a coolass leather sheath. i like the heft of these. i like how these have some texture on the ends so grabbing food is easy and very undramatic. i use them almost everyday, and they live in my Man-Bag. right next to my flashlight and multitool. when done, i wipe them down with the anti bacterial wipe you can find damn near anywhere these days.

if you eat a lot of food away from home, they are great. with recent events and the to-go foods it is amazing how many times the staffer forgets to put a fork in my bag. me? "i got this". (unless i ordered soup, then it's "!@#$!#$!%^!!!")

When we lived in Hawaii the second time (1967 to 1971) we found a local Chinese food place in Waipahu, just a mile or so from our house. The first few times we went in they brought the funny looking white folks silverware. We asked for chopsticks and the of course had the cheap wooden ones in a paper sleeve. Dad loved it because he could fill up two active teenage boys for cheap. Mom was happy to not cook.

After the third visit they knew to forget the silverware. I was efficient enough to get my meal eaten, but never anything like a life long user.

At my old bachelor house the couple that moved in across the street I found out were opening a local Chinese restaurant. I had a hard time understanding them but I got the address. Most of the time I was the only round eyes in there. They were recent immigrants from Hong Kong. They did not have silverware at first. Then the locals discovered the place.

They had great meals, and it grew and expanded several times. Man, I miss that place. The original owners sold it, and it went downhill fast.

It has been years since I even tried chopsticks. Likely I am a beginner level again.

Forks are just faster! ;)

wow!! personally, the Spork feels so weird. i would go full blown spoon before i grabbed a spork.

Funny. For the past month or two, I've been thinking of asking how many folks on the board 1 know how to use chopsticks, and 2 uses them regularly.

My dad was in the Navy. We were stationed in Japan twice. The first time we were there, a nice Japanese lady gifted me (I was 8) a pair of chopsticks in a carrying case. Everything was plastic. I still have those. I think it was the second time that we went in '83-85, that my mom bought two sets of chopsticks. I've still got those and use them fairly regularly. I mostly only use them when eating Asian food.

I've been wondering if a metal set would be any good. My concern would be if they get hot, but then if the food is that hot, I might be waiting. Anyway.

I know that back in the day, when I was a kid, I would eat huge plates of fried rice with the square wooden chopsticks, and I could/would eat every last grain of rice. It's a lot easier to do with square, grippy chopsticks than round, smooth chopsticks.

I like your comment about them being slightly rough textured. I may need to find a set of those.

Growing up in South Pacific, if you couldn't use chop sticks you went hungry.

Around the house they were always Chinese enamel painted wooden ones. I guess the leaching lead paint gave the food a little something extra.

Now I just use the cheap bamboo ones.

My wife and daughter both have metal sets and use them regularly.

I have found a normal tablespoon to be far more effective for eating virtually anything from Asia, short of noodles or sushi. Sushi is about the only thing I use chopsticks for these days.

And I personally don’t like metal chopsticks, or metal or hard plastic straws.

Chopsticks are great for poking out the cucumbers in my sushi. I hate cucumbers

These are my old cheap chopsticks. The set with the brown handle seems to be some sort of wrap. I'm guessing it's like a hard heat shrink, and the wrap is fraying. The black set with the little mother of pearl inlay is not doing that.

When I met my in-laws for the first time in Tianjin, the whole extended family were pointing at and gawking and chattering among themselves while I was eating... Apparently they didn't think a gwielo could use chopsticks well.. I can and met there approval..

Having to drink warm PBRs with dinner was tough though..

Oddly enough if you go to a Korean restaurant here they provide metal chopsticks, Chinese, Japanese, you get those faux ivory, or bamboo chopsticks..

Thai restaurants, a spoon and a fork....

My family lived in Japan for three years before I was hatched. My Mom took cooking classes and got very proficient...she was unafraid.

Growing up, we all had our own set of chopsticks, back-ups as well: Some ornate, most business grade.
