Do you use gin as a preference over vodka?

A proper Martini uses gin, otherwise it is a "Vodka Martini".

Bombay, shaken. Pour vermouth, swirl, pour out excess, add the Bombay, two olives, and a cocktail onion. Mmmmmm. If you go the Vodka route, stay with Stoli, Ketel One, or Grey Goose.

i'm not a martini drinker, but YES i prefer gin over vodka. And i agree with the stoli/ketel/g.goose assertion; there is nothing more disgusting in the world than cheap vodka... except maybe cheap gin. Or any tequila. Yeeech.

I second you on this. I hate vodka in general. Tequila, however...

give me a good anejo or agave, and we are rolling. FYI, Sammmy hagar's Cabo Wabo Tequila is the best Tequila I have ever had, hands down.

The only martini I seem to drink is a cosmopolitan.

Bill I hope you are not having Chalkie as your "taste tester" as you experiment making martinis.

"Tequila, however... "

Admittedly, I am jaded...

It was the MLB playoffs, 1999. My first year at NU. The Red Sox had just been eliminated by the Yankees. A HALF A LITER of Bacardi 151 and a few shots of tequila later and I couldn't hold down water for 2 days and couldn't hold down food for another day and a half after that. I should have had my stomach pumped...

strangely enough, i CAN drink 151 now, but the smell of tequila makes me dry heave, and the thought of it even makes me a little queasy

the correct way to do it is to pour the gin into the glass, then take an atomizer (like for perfume) filled with vermouth. ONE squeeze of the bellows while holding the atomizer 15" above the surface of the gin, letting the puff of vermouth gently float onto the surface of the drink. Do not stir or shake. Drink and enjoy. Repeat as necessary.

My aunt "Sam" taught me that when I was 8 years old...

My favorite recipe for an extra-extra-extra dry martini:

Pour the gin
add the olive
look at the vermouth

Enjoy your martini

Now that is a Real dry martini. More subtle and poetic than the "dry" versions my father taught me: like leaving out the vermouth or swishing the vermouth around the glass and then pouring it back in the bottle.

Do you have a good recipe for margaritas as well?

It's not Zaphod's but...
equal parts of gin, vodka, bacardi and tequila shaken with ice.
Also known as a Mona Lisa for obvious reasons if you look at the stupid smile of anyone who has drunk one.

Isa's recipe is the original date rape cocktail.

Much more subtle is three parts grappa to one part amaretto. Mix and refrigerate for an hour. Serve in a frozen wine glass.
