A new all-time low in televised sports

I was going through the channels and found, on ESPN, a tag competition. As in, "Tag! You're it!" You know, that game we played as kids. They actually had grownups - if I can use the word to describe these people - playing tag on a set with obstacles to run around to evade the competition. They even referred to the channel as ESPN8 - The Ocho.

I didn't watch.

And at the end of every F1 race (a real sport) ESPN cuts away to televise some silly game. Sometimes a basket ball game from the 1980s or a replay of a game from last year.

Tag is just as much of a "sport" as any of the other silly games ESPN televises. Any game, played with a ball, be it a golf ball, marble, or basketball is just a game, it is not a sport. That of course, includes the games with cards, chess, checkers, or played with a puck like hockey.

Watching adults play tag, or hide and seek is no different than any college football game or the world series. Just watching men (or women) play a game NOT a sport is boring to me. Millions of people spend lots of money to watch. Not me.

As long as badminton and BMX bicycle riding are Olympic sports, there is no bottom.

The "ESPN 8" is a joke from a Dodgeball move starring Vince Vaughn, Ben Stiller and others. The channel's tag line is "If it's almost a sport, you'll find it here".

Under this banner ESPN 2 is running counter-programming to the Olympics, including the Fooseball World Cup, Disc golf, Adult Team Tag, and Pogopallosa (BMX-style stunts on pogo sticks).

It's all good fun and I applaud ESPN for having a sense of humour.

That's fantastic! It's a shame they don't also have dodgeball.
Remember the 5 D's of dodgeball: Dodge, duck, dip, dive and dodge.
If you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge a ball.

It's hilarious every time they do it. It's like the people who choose the programming are trying to outdo each other.

I can tolerate badminton (well, not watching it, but holding my nose and accepting it as an Olympic event).

Not a fan of any subjectively scored event.

I can see hide and go seek coming to an ESPN near you. It's riveting! Where'd they go? And will the seeker find them? Tune in!

You guys laugh, but there IS a competitive tag game on TV, it's basically contestants evading people parkour style. It looks kinda goofy, but then you see how much they do in 2 or 3 minutes, and it starts to seem pretty athletic...

I stumbled across one where they were playing naked leapfrog. A kids we used to play that, but differently.

Baseketball may have been prophetic. Traditional major league sports becomes and arrogant and corrupt parody of itself. Two loser idiots played by trey Parker and Matt stone invent a backyard game that becomes a national obsession. The rest of the movie is them trying to preserve their integrity against the corporate sports industry.

Both are more difficult than any sport you have ever participated in.

I've been told that in some places people fill a stadium or auditorium to watch others on the floor or field play video games. Has this made ESPN yet?
