How do podcasts make money?
I know that it's probably a really dumb question and hopefully this can remain unpolitical but the recent Joe Rogan dust-up has me wondering...do the podcasts have ads? I don't have Spotify and have only seen clips of podcasts online so I really don't know.
The podcasts that I have listened to on my phone did not have any ads that I can recall. Is the $$ all in people subscribing to Spotify in order to hear particular podcasts? ![]() Once again, this is ONLY a question about the economics of podcasts, because I honestly do not know. There are plenty of threads over in PARF in which to invoke political opinions. Thanks.

Most all that I've listened to have advertising before the beginning of the podcast.
Some have multiple ads. Most of them offer a 'skip ad' button to go right to the podcast.

It can be a no-ad subscription service or for less money it can have ads. It least that is what I've been told.

Many take voluntary donations through their website.

I suppose it all depends on the source of the podcast. A “free” podcast can be either one supported by other means (like NPR or similar corporate backed re-packaging of content) or a new pod that hasn’t gained a following. Many that I have had “live read” ads a la the beginning of radio. Third type is subscription based, which negates the need for ads.

Business model. Spotify operates under a freemium business model (basic services are free, while additional features are offered via paid subscriptions). Spotify generates revenue by selling premium streaming subscriptions to users and advertising placements to third parties.

Idc. They usually have a soothing voice and after 12 hours of driving I'll take it. |

The biggies like Rogan and Marc Maron, Conan, etc. all do "ads" in the sense they have sponsors. All the one's I've listened to read the copy themselves. Conan's can be quite amusing. In a 1 hour plus podcast, you'll hear 4-5 sponsor mentions of a 30 to 60 seconds. Popular sponsors are things like Stamps.Com, Better Health, Squarespace, State Farm, etc.
