Burning Ring of Fire!

Thunderstorms here twice in the last week...lots of limbs down. Power out for 4 days between the 2 storms.

Cut the limbs up and made a pile.
Today...no wind...green grass...perfect for burning the pile.

Had about a quart of drain oil, which I mixed about a quart of gasoline with it. The limbs hadn't dried good, so I knew I needed some help getting it started.

The pile was over head high. I stuffed some paper in the bottom and poured the mixture over the whole works....and lit a match.....

My mistake was waiting too long to strike the match...the fumes spread out way beyond the pile.

90 degrees out...I was wearing shorts. I no longer have leg hair!
Other than that...I'm fine.

Yeah, that's a big NO NO on the gasoline part of this equation. The fumes will ignite way before it ever reaches the pile of limbs/paper/oil.

I figured a 50/50 mixture w/drain oil would eliminate the danger.
I shook it up good before pouring it on also!

Plus...the 90 degree temp today didn't help either.

One of my buddies can tell a great story of when he was a kid. His dad wanted to just burn the leaves from the heavily wooded house the live at. His dad had a 55 gallon drum and welded up a grate to hold the leaves off the ground and let air in. He figured once they were burning, just keep tossing in leaves. Of course the leaves were a little wet from dew, so his dad pours on some gas the throws matches in. Nothing. More gas, still nothing. More gas one more tossed in match and my buddy said next thing he knows is he is laying on his back next to his dad, his ears are ringing and there is a volcano of burning leaves erupting from the barrel. His dad jumped up and started yelling to stamp out the falling leaves that are on fire. He can't hear his dad due to the ringing in his ears, but he figured he better help put of the fires before the neighborhood has a forest fire.

They put out all the leaves, and neither of them were hurt. He said his dad came to his room that evening when he could hear and said we will never speak of this day again.

When I worked in the PT department of an acute care hospital, I worked on a guy w/ burnt legs (mostly 2nd some 3rd).

He had a brush pile, put some diesel on it, but lit it standing in a shallow dip in the ground that was downhill from the brush. Filled with diesel fumes, it went "woosh" around his legs.

Worked on another guy, he was working in the engine bay of his boat wearing a speedo, something went "woosh" and he had 2nd degree over most of his body.

Things I never fark around with are flammable gasses and electricity.

Be careful with the size of the pile also. Years ago I had a very large pile of limbs and brush to burn. I thought to myself, "Wow, this pile is pretty big." I lit the thing off, and soon had to back away because of the radiant heat. I had a black, heavy duty garden hose with a spray nozzle on the ground maybe 25+ ft. away in case I needed it. My wife said, "Look at the hose.' I looked and it had water squirting out if it in three places from the radiant heat weakening the hose so the water pressure could burst through. Learned a lesson that day.

BTDT too. I imagine that the oil would have resulted in a serious column of smoke.
