Any commercials that make you NOT want to buy a product?
Are there commercials or ads out there that just make you not want to buy a product or service, because of the ad itself?
For me it is the Liberty Mutual ones. Besides the fact that they are so overwhelming, and play every other commercial, they are incredibly idiotic and annoying. I want to kick the tv. Exactly what demographic are they going after?? .

Wouldn't bother me if I never saw Jimmy Johnson and Carvana ever again.

All of them. But then again half the time IDK what they are selling. The product itself is obscured with so called cleverness.

Whenever I have the misfortune of being on broadcast tv: Insurance commercials- all of them, especially when they say "Pay for only the coverage you need!"
--seriously, are kids really this clueless on how to buy insurance? rjp

Someone in their advertising department figured out a large enough percentage of the American public has Stockholm Syndrome and will respond obediently to being shouted at by strangers. "The word emu is just like the word LiMu. Here is an emu. Here is our name. Get it? Get it? Emu. LiMu. Did you get it? No really we are going to tell you again. Emu and LiMu rhyme. Did you get it? Here is a picture of an emu. We will continue continue this lesson until you fully obey." The problem with the obey logic is the commercials still don't stop after purchase. lol.

I don't really see commercials much any more since we cut the cord, but yes, there have been plenty of commercials over the years that ensured that I would never consider the products being advertised.
If they insult my intelligence too much, that's pretty much a guaranteed no sale. That's many/most of them. If I feel like I'm being beat over the head by commercials for the same company over and over and over again, that's also not good. If they can/do afford to pay for that much advertising, then I am less likely to purchase. Their best bet is to be entertaining/funny. I'm still not terribly swayed by commercials. But at least the funny ones don't make me actively dislike the product/company. I still don't purchase from them. THere have been a bunch of entertaining commercials over the years, I can't remember them all, but things that come to mind the Budweiser frogs, the Geico gecko, the "so easy a cave-man could do it" (Geico too?), maybe the Energizer bunny, the "Smilin' Bob" commercials for Enzyte, and the Dos Equis most interesting man in the world commercials.

I'm tired of every commercial that is trying to win the intersectionality race. But I'll admit that I could be wrong and there's a happy transgender interracial amputee couple out there who loves hamburger helper.

Liberty mutual came to mind as soon as I read the thread title. Every time I see them I I see what their target market is.

Political ads/commercials (Even if I like the person running- which I don't)
Most insurance commercials All big pharma drug commercials All commercials that promote financing to encourage loans as a great way to get something the target audience can't afford. Lawyer commercials (Suing the latest drug that went wrong from above pharma commercials). I quit tv years ago, but still see political smear ads / insurance commercials on YT occasionally where you can't "skip" them. Last edited by LEAKYSEALS951; 08-21-2021 at 10:23 AM.. |

On a similar note, it must suck to be a white, male actor looking for commercial work.

A guy I went to college with became an "Ad Man" in New York. He worked, as is apparently the cae for most folks in advertising, a bunch of different companies.
He said he was involved with the, "where's the beef" campaign but that could have just been the cocaine and Vodka talking. He did say there are two kinds of ad campaigns that are successful, those that amuse (make the watcher smile and relate) and those that annoy, the two emotions they want because studies show that is when our memory logs the product in. He said the absolute win/win is a campaign that amuses then annoys. Again, the amphetamines and Gin may have been talking... Me? I'd cut Flo's heart out.
