In the movie Dune. Was “Spice” worm poop?

I thought I’d watch the newer version in the hopes of understanding WTF that movie was about. Just saw the preview and now I’m not so sure.

Was spice worm poop? That had crazy value as…. What? I can’t remember a damn thing.

I think it was part of the worm, not poop, but maybe I'm wrong. I never read the books and saw the first movie forever ago once.

Worm is the Spice. The Spice is the Worm. I'm not sure it is "poop" but the Worms produce the spice. If I remember correctly, the "pre-spice mass" spontaneously turns into the "tiny worms" which can be used to make the "Water of Life".

That movie, while cinematic, can't do justice to the Book(s). The Sci-Fi miniseries was actually much better, just not as high budget.

I have hope for the movie, since it is only half the first book AND it is over 2 hours.

Just reread Dune this year. Pretty stoked to see the movie.

One can hope.

If I remember correctly, young worms burrow deep in the desert to find underground water. Worm poop mixes with the water and creates a chemical reaction which explosively makes the residue explode up onto the surface. Sunlight ages the residue and it is harvest to make spice. Or something like that.

Do you remember the underground lake?

I don't know the origin except that it came from the Worms but there was a lot of it.

I'm guess Worm pee.

The underground lakes were water caches collected by the Fremen.

My wife, who's a huge Dune fan and reads the books at least once a year, gave me a link with this description:

How is spice made?
Spice melange is formed deep beneath the sands of Arrakis, where the fungal excretions of sandworm larva mixes with water to form a mass that eventually explodes to the surface due to the planet’s extreme heat. Collecting the melange is extremely difficult; the explosions are deadly and the material hazardous. It’s collected by a vehicle called a Harvester, which must also avoid the giant sandworms. Aircrafts known as Carryalls lift Harvesters to safety.

The Fremen, however, co-exist with the sandworms in the desert and have learned how to harvest spice manually for their own consumption and use.

I think I should read the books.

Never have seen any of the movies despite being a Lynch fan.

If you like Sci-fi you will like the books. Very well written. Syfy channel did a mini series " children of dune" which is the second book that I enjoyed.

I just downloaded the audiobook. I have gotten completely hooked. There are times I pull into the garage and don't want to turn off the car.

I only started the audiobook after watching the Nerd Cookies videos on Youtube explaining some of the characters.

Reading Dune was enough for me and must have been the thickest book I've read. I'll pass on the others.

I read all of the sequels too but the original trilogy is the best.

It got a bit much for me after the 1st book after the Artreides beat the emperor.
I mean I've eaten plenty of Acid, but even for me it was a bit cuuckoo far fetched.
