Obesity and COVID
A thread in PARF raised this issue and after doing a bit of reading, it’s clear that this is a worthy topic of serious discussion. Regardless of the reason, the obvious link between the two seems to be mostly ignored in the media. Yet, addressing obesity in the context of COVID could make a profound difference in hospitalizations and deaths.
https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/70/wr/mm7010e4.htm https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8073853/ https://www.cidrap.umn.edu/news-perspective/2021/08/study-severe-covid-higher-viral-loads-immune-response-linked-obesity As indicated by the CDC publication, up to 78% of severe COVID occurred in patients with high, or very high BMI. And worse yet, this is not new information...yet it’s been mostly ignored throughout communication with the public at large. Meanwhile, obesity in America stupidly heads in the wrong direction. Can lives be saved by educating children and adults on this topic?

My sister's fat (like me) and she got all Pfizered up at the first of the year.
Delta variant last month for her. Covid related pneumonia and hospitalized for four-ish days. No other co-morbidity issues save pushing 60, if that counts as one.

Hasn't this been a well known comorbidity since pretty early in 2020?
And doesn't everyone know that being obese is bad for your health? And isn't the world (at least the SJW in the US) against mentioning the fact that being obese is bad for your health, so instead we have to tell everyone "it's OK to be curvy." (that seems to primarily be the term used for females. I have no idea what they'd say about a heavy guy.) Someone is going to have to tell Covid that it's racist for attacking obese people. Maybe cancel culture can bully it into submission.

One of my friends is a 6'3 fit vegan that refused to wear a mask because "he had a good immune system" and he "never got the flu" and never got a flu shot much less a China flu shot.
He said he came within a inch of needed to be on a respirator after 4 days in intensive care. I have not seen him in person since, just a video chat. No doubt obesity is a health issue all by itself. It sure does not make the Kung flu better.

For instance, if you have COPD, severe asthma, diabetes, etc... (including if you are obese) then you are much more in danger from Covid than if you do not have those things. Your buddy may have been correct. If he had been obese, then there's a higher chance that he'd have died vs recovering. Thin and healthy doesn't mean you won't get it and won't be really impacted, but it could mean that you'll recover. My buddy that passed away last week was pretty thin and healthy. Anyone can get sick and/or die from Covid, but there are certain things that make you much more likely to die.

Obesity and _________________.
Just fill in the blank. Other than famine, you're not better off being fat.

Seriously, with heart disease still the number one killer, Covid should not be the number one reason to stay fit.
Weird that the 24/7 vaccinathon doesn't ever speak to physical fitness. To be fair, they do have a govt funded drug to sell.

It's saddening to walk through the grocery store and see all the cardiovascular/diabetes train wrecks wearing 12 cent surgical mask like things.

Well, I do know a guy who weighs 500#. He got it. I thought he was a goner. Didn’t get the jab.
Still going today with O2 up the nose. I was going to buy his Weatherby from the widow. (He sort of conned my MIL out of my FIL’s spoon) |

Michelle Obama tried making obesity a public health issue.
It didn’t go well. Michael Bloomberg tried making obesity a public health issue. It didn’t go well.

I don't believe the CDC on this. Statistics are made up. Follow the money.
Obese people were prioritized for vaccination early on. I have only casually been following covid news since I am drama adverse and defiantly heard much about the link between obesity and outcomes. Almost boarders on obvious I think. I am right on the verge of obese by BMI. I can do a dozen pull ups, 50+ pushups without stopping, can jog at a decent pace. Have normalish blood pressure, sugars etc. I need to lose some weight but the obesity metric isn't perfect either.

not sure why you thought this was some kind of secret, you being misinformed or uninformed doesn't mean there is some kind of secret or something.
easier/faster/more effective to get a shot than to attempt to in less than 3 months, have people lose 100+ lbs. seems like your basic fat shamming, not a practical solution in the timeframe required. |
