4000 Detroit women are safer than they were before

Quote:
Ector held a two-day annual event at the end of August where he helped train 4,000 minority women from inner city Detroit on gun safety and use, explaining that Americans deserve to use their Second Amendment rights to protect themselves as gun crimes continue to increase.

"If simply taking guns out of the hands of law-abiding citizens was the answer, Detroit would be the safest place on earth. Instead, it’s seen a 53% increase in shootings in 2020 alone," Ector said. "In fact, last weekend, I’ve trained 4,000 lovely women to ensure they’re never victims. And this isn’t about politics for me — it’s about common sense."

Detroit was among cities across the nation last year that saw a sharp increase in shootings, with Motor City notching a 19% increase in homicides in 2020 over 2019, and a 53% increase in nonfatal shootings.

"There's a wave of criminal violence sweeping across all big cities in America, fueled by politicians hellbent on dismantling the police, releasing criminals onto the streets, and failing to enforce the gun laws on the books. Instead of protecting their constituents, these politicians continue to push their extreme gun control agenda,"

I went to school with guns. So did a rather large number of my classmates. During hunting seasons, of course. Rifles or shotguns in the trunks of many seniors' cars, or visible in the window racks of their pickup trucks. And you know what, many of those cars and trucks were not even locked. Never a problem. Ever.

Fast forward to my two sons' high school years. We did this backwards, sending them to boarding school in Wisconsin and bringing them home for university here in Washington. Anyway, I would fly to Wisconsin every Thanksgiving to go deer hunting with them. I would venture to say that every room in the boys' dorm had at least a couple of rifles and shotguns in them. Again, never a problem. Not once. Ever.

This. Having shotgun in your trunk was not noteworthy when I was a kid, and we had a gun rack in our truck. I went to Michigan State in the late 80s, and I remember a kid asking about keeping a gun in his dorm room for hunting. A number of us piled on. We were told that they didn't want guns in your room, but the trunk of your car was just fine. We went on many squirrel/rabbit hunting trips while enrolled at MSU.

Same here, we had a parking lot full of pick up trucks with gun racks, full of shot guns, and deer rifles.
I can remember a kid giving a presentation about his shotgun, and brought it to school as a prop.
I also proudly wore my pocket knife on my belt loop to compliment my cub scout uniform.
What changed ?

FWIW shotguns and rifles can;t be hidden in a backpack. More importantly, you guys (OK we guys ) settled things with our fists.

I typed one sentence and look at the projection. I am a hunter. I’ve probably been more successful than most of you on this forum in that arena. I own guns, many of them. My sons hunt. My sons did not take their shotguns to school with them. That’s simply ridiculous. I didn’t take my shotgun or rifle to school with me. My dad would have kicked my ass if I hung a gun in the window. Why? Because that’s a stupid thing to do. If I did go to school after an early morning of duck hunting my gun was locked up in my toolbox and the ammo was behind my seat. Guns are a tool, they are not something to be fawned over and worshipped like many tend to do. The idea of arming everybody so they can protect themselves is completely ridiculous. People freeze. People make rash decisions. Not everyone is John Wick.

In the 1980's when I was in HD we had a shooting club. During duck season there were shotguns in the hunters trucks.

Sacramento, not in the sticks

Gun safety rather than fear is what used to be taught

I remember thinking that people driving around with their gun in the rear window was so stupid. Gun dorks. It’s funny that those same gun dorks get old and continue to be gun dorks. My guns are purpose built, from the home protection shotgun to the .338 Winchester mag used to take my last elk. They are maintained and ready should I need them. Do I fawn all over them and obsess over the fact that everyone should own a firearm? Absolutely not.

Well, you have a point burner. I find cars to be more of an artistic expression than a firearm.

i am a hunter but not a very good one. i do okay. i have plenty of firearms, but i too considerer them tools. there is as much romance and mystic about them as my really good hammer. i guffawed at your single sentence. it cracked me up.

i almost gave a spare Glock to a buddy, but he pissed me off in a friend type of way. he said he needs one to take his self defense seriously. i said, "so how do you explain why you wont wear a mask or get vaccinated"

and we laughed...and he didnt get a free glock. (plus he is in Hawaii)

I'm pretty sure I must have started what you perceive to be this "projection". You will notice, however, that I passed no judgement on your comment, merely relaying my personal experiences in this matter.

We (my school mates and later my sons and I) brought our hunting rifles and shotguns to school out of a matter of convenience. We often hunted before school hours. We often hunted after school. Many lived far enough away that it would have been impractical to hunt in the morning, run their guns home, and make it to school on time. Or, after school, it would have been dark before they made it out hunting if they had to run home to retrieve their guns.

This was all a matter of practicality. No more, no less.

Were the guns displayed proudly in the back window? Did you tote them around school? If they’re legally stowed in a safe location then I don’t have a beef and nobody else should either.
