Why did you sell it?

It was a long process to get where it is. Like 40 years ha ha. I had it so long it got restored twice but the second time around was an extensive body restoration. Then came the modifications slowly over the years, one at a time. I sold it because it was done, nothing left to do. And, it was too pristine to use it as it should be used. It never went out in the rain, sat in the sun, parked near other cars, too nice to give to my grandson, etc. It evolved into a PITA and I didn't really forsee that problem.

I always have liked the 2002.

Wow, you've had it since the 80s? This was a marriage for you. Glad you got paid for your troubles.

Sorry you were never really able to enjoy the fruits of your labor. How many miles did you log in the 40 years?

I bought the car in 1977, sold it and bought it back. I enjoyed it for many years but now it's too pristine to really have fun with it. Too worried about a little door ding or rock chip. If it had just one ding I wouldn't have gotten the price I got. Mixed emotions, like selling a kid but on the other hand selling something that wasn't all that useful. Get the money while the gettins good.

Q ship!

I worry for the stock differential.

manbridge 74 09-27-2021 04:57 PM

The case for the unrestored car was never made any better. Once they are too pristine they are parked or sold...

slow&rusty 09-28-2021 09:32 AM

Congrats...super strong money.

I recently sold this on BaT, I did well but no where near $65k!!

rattlsnak 09-28-2021 11:02 AM

That price is INSANE! Congrats!!!!

gregpark 09-28-2021 05:43 PM

Thank you. Still a bit in shock. I was hoping for it to bring 40K but the last 2 minutes of the auction were crazy. Pretty exciting, my wife couldn't believe what she was seeing on my phone. A really nice guy in Seattle bought it and flying down Friday to road trip it home. I filled the tank for him ha ha

I haven’t seen you post for a while, Only.
Hope all is good with you.
Congrats on your sale! Looks like that was well sold!

Deschodt 09-30-2021 09:23 AM

Congrats, BaT is a great place to sell. I bet you miss it sooner than you hoped...

I've had 13 P-cars over 30 years, from 356s to 991. And yet the one car that will never leave our household is our 2002. Something about that stupid little car puts a smile on my face, everytime I see it or sit in it. It affects my mood for the better when I drive it. It's like the family pet. People give it a thumbs up everytime it's out. It once snapped a clutch part on my wife, mid-worst-intersection of town, where she had to be pushed out of the way... A mortal sin for her and yet she forgave it its indiscretion. It's fun to drive, carries 4 in comfort, ugly/cute as a puppy, and finally getting its due money wise !

I've said on this very board "buy one before it's too late", sounds like it's too late.

speeder 09-30-2021 09:37 AM

The last time that I had a BMW 2002, the OP's selling price would have been missing a zero. And that would have made it the most expensive one in the country.

Not talking 50 years ago, either...more like 15-20. :)

908/930 09-30-2021 09:53 AM

The most I paid for mine (I had three 2002's ) was $700, LOL. One was an orange 1973 parts car that had no rust and mint, aside from the prior owner had rolled it over on a back road, what a waste.

I know I'm going to miss it, the buyer picks it up tomorrow. The money will dull the pain a smidgen. I have other car projects going. Se la vie

You’re going to be sad? I’d be air-fking like a crazed pit bull.

You just won the 2021 lottery.

gregpark 09-30-2021 12:18 PM

^ my wife is doing just that

herr_oberst 09-30-2021 12:21 PM

You TOLD your wife?
Opportunity lost to put away some mad money for the next project! :-)

McLovin 09-30-2021 12:22 PM

I’d be laughing all the way to the bank.

gregpark 09-30-2021 12:31 PM

She watched the final moments of the auction with me. It was pretty exciting. With 2 minutes to go it was at 32K but they add 2 minutes after every last second bid and it carried on from there. That's when she started dancing. Not only got rid of a car but now she can go shopping like a crazed pit bull! Unless, of course, I buy another car right away ha ha

gregpark 09-30-2021 01:24 PM

On a side note, BAT assigns an agent to you and your car. My contact was Jake. I told him I'd like to set a reserve price of 40K. He said they feel more comfortable at 30. Ok, can we split the difference and set it at 35? No, he says. It's 30K or sell your car elsewhere. I felt confident that it would hit 40 so I said ok, 30 it is. After it sold I fired an email to him saying Good news Jake! My car made reserve! (a little dig at him because it sold for more than double the reserve). No response whatsoever. Imagine that

I hear you..I sold my alfa GTV there... Same deal except they were just on the cusp of being bought and more famous. So I was able to say no, my reserve is 30 or I sell elsewhere.. Back then the guy caved but now they don't care, they got so much traffic. I never heard back from him either. Post sale, you no longer exist to them. Buyer vetting ? none. Help with transaction ? none... Honestly reserve is irrelevant, if you refuse to sell the car, what are they gonna do, ban you from BAT ? ;-)

Great site for selling and maximizing profit... My opinion is it's now so popular with a worldwide reach, that there's bound to be some rich idiot somewhere with no idea about market values, who will overbid. So you will never ever find a deal anymore.

gregpark 09-30-2021 01:55 PM

BAT is a great place to sell. I've bid on a few cars but was out of the running because I have a hard time buying something I can't see up close or drive and stopped bidding after my comfort zone. For a seller, 99 bucks for a week of international exposure is fantastic. My car had 9,000 views and about a thousand watchers.
I once sold an RX7 through them and the I recognized the agents name. I told him I did some work for the Porsche dealership in Marin and the owner had your name, any relation? Yeah, that's my dad! I said I also worked on your dad's house and your uncle's too. Say hi for me. Next thing I know, I'm assigned a different agent. It got personal and they don't want that. I'll bet BAT has lawyers on staff, considering what can possibly go wrong with a sale. They take the 99 bucks from the seller and the 5 percent of the selling price from the buyer and wash their hands of both of you.
