I just wonder how well you need to aim such a short barrel. I've never fired anything that short.

I don't feel like a 2" barrel is harder to shoot accurately at 3-7m than a 4.5" or 6" barrel. I think the main difference is going to be the power developed in the short barrel.

A lot of folks go for a hammerless (shrouded really) model for that sort of thing, but then those are often for carry, not nightstand use.

I think something like that would be fine. The real benefit is the simplicity of the revolver that just goes bang as long as its got live rounds to eat.

I have no real data, but I suspect 99.999% of bad guys in your home will be heading out the door or window they came in after the first shot. Or even when they hear the gun cocked.

I have a 38 special revolver, for my bedstead gun. It will fire 100% of the time with the pull of a trigger and no adrenaline panic state will have me fumbling or forgetting to rack back the automatic.

The ultimate point and click device. I can't image a gun battle like in the movies as I am not a drug dealer or money launderer or fence so I am not a target of the bad guys.

It will be much the same as a model 36 or 60, just made out of lighter alloys. It will be an excellent gun. .38 Special coming out of a short barrel will have adequate blast for the purpose. And plenty accurate.

Here's a model 36 being shot.

That would make a great carry gun. That's what it is made for. As such, it compromises a lot of things that do not need to be compromised in a "nightstand" gun. A "nightstand" gun does not have to be that short, that light, or be limited to just five rounds.

This is the smallest revolver platform S&W make, their "J" frame. Next up in size is the "K", followed by the "L", and then the "N". .357 magnum / .38 Special is available in those three larger sizes, with increasing weight and, in some variations, capacity, with each frame size increase. The "K" frames will hold six, the "L" frames seven, and the "N" frames will hold eight. Any of those larger sizes, with a bit more barrel length as well, would be far superior as a "nightstand" gun.

Jeff, I've had my M27 (N frame) for over 4 decades... it holds 6... didn't know any held 8. But I don't need a night spoon within arms reach.... so I'll either be running in the other direction or someone will be running into 00 defensive load buckshot.

If I had to use a handspoon.... .45 ACP.

I would NOT trust a .38 to stop a crazy amped up intruder .... jmho.

What do you think about this night stand spoon?

I have the hammerless version (642) and have come to hate it. Unpleasant to shoot even regular 38spl and you’d need to shove it in a bad guys gut to be accurate.

P365 is the answer for me. Hides better, more rounds and far far more accurate for me.

But wait you said nightstand? Well **** then get a p220 in stainless.

A flowery example of a couple of small framed S&W's. Top one is a model 36 and the other one is a model 60. Both go bang about the same as your 637 would.

Yup, some newer models now hold eight. Not all of the "N" framed .357's do, just a few of the more "modern" versions of them. Mine all hold six.

I sometimes carry a 1911, either full sized if weather and clothing permit or Officers' Model size if I cannot wear a jacket. I like 'em 'cause they are flat. I am, however, a dyed in the wool revolver guy, so if I don't have to try and conceal it on my person, that's my preference. Especially as a "nightstand" gun that I don't have to conceal. Mine is a Model 29 4" loaded with a mid range load, somewhere between full-up .44 mag and standard .44 Special. It's the top one in this photo, with the bottom one being a Model 19. This also shows the size difference between the "N" and "K" frames:

I prefer a semi auto close by at night. More rounds and less kick. That will buy me enough time to get to the 12 gauge to get the party started.

For a bedside gun concealability doesn't matter. I want stopping power and capacity. Mine is a SIG P226 with a light and laser on the rail and two 18 rd mags in .357SIG. EDC is a P365.

Bedside gun is same as my edc.

Springfield EMP a small 1911. It has night sites on it 9+1 rounds of 147gr 9mm

I would use my CZ Tacsport with 20+1 of 9mm but no night sites and a 2# trigger isn't my first choice.

I
After shooting a steel plate compition in the dark more rounds are needed in low light high stress.

My night stand firearm of choice is a Wasser Pistole. Similar to a 1911 in .45 In appearance guess, but more the ort of thing you can spray around the whole room should there be a situation.

LOL ...

I'm an extremely light sleeper ... no one could enter my house without me having plenty of time to greet them properly. Add in a canine alarm, and all I want is the most stopping power possible .... immediately.

Is anyone here gonna suggest that ANY handgun is better than 00 defensive load buckshot?

Nothing is even in the same league imo .... not even close.

I think the idea of a night stand gun is to grab it in desperation in the middle of the night to protect you, and your family. A revolver is very simple, hardly ever jams, .38 ammo is some of the cheaper out there, and gives you 6 shots. After the 1st shot, if the intruder is still coming, he may have friends in the house with him, and you have bigger problems.

Just make sure you keep it secure from children's hands.
