Yes, I believe he had/ has more than one PhD.
Randy has been my friend for over 20 years, most of that time in 911 Tech. |

That's what I always thought was odd about Webby. He was clearly a knowledgeable guy in a lot of different areas. I never got why he did the childish insult thing. Still, I thought the guy was pretty funny. He was an instigator. I can appreciate that.

Randy was one amongst a number of board members with whom I would've liked the chance to have sat down, had a few beers & chatted about our cars & life in general.
RIP Webby

On the eve of one of tjeir rendvous one of tje PNW members was talking about what if he had mechanical problems on the way and what kind of tools to take? I suggested that he plan his route to the rondievou according to where all the Porsche mechanics were located...just in case. That did not go over well wt the cult of the Gruppe. And Webby took umbrage. I never got a hard on for webby..but was always braced for his acrimony. The acrimony i do have is for the Early Registry..and it is over the way i got aced outa there. They put me on a master ignore list..so i could post all i liked but it never showed up. It took 2 posts to figure it out.. THEY DIDNT HAVE THE SACK TO TELL TO MY FACE..it was a joke on me to them. So i gots no use for them. So i came over here..where Z man almost bounced me..until he figured it out. He told me as much. Since 07 i aint like I was no more. Now i just tell it to ya straight up.. I have set things up with a post or thread..and the discussion just seems to take me where i wanted to go. |

Is it normal for you to exchange post cards with Mr. Webb? Yes, I recognize the line from The Shawshank Redemption.

I'm sorry to report that I can verify the passing of Randy. I was contacted this morning by Jeff Higgins, an old friend from my all-to-brief tenure as an R Gruppe member. Jeff hoped to determine if the rumors of Randy's passing had any validity. As a Eugene resident, and someone that DID drink beers with Randy now and then over the last 15 years, he thought that I would know. I didn't - I hadn't seen Randy since the start of the pandemic. I did some digging by contacting someone locally that I knew he associated with. The worst was confirmed. Randy died of natural causes on the date shown in the obituary noted in this thread. That obituary did misstate his age - he was 69. I was forwarded the obituary attached here; I believe from his home town in Louisiana.
![]() It's interesting to hear of all of your perspectives. I believe that I'm the only person posting in this huge thread that actually had first-hand contact with him. So let me share what I experienced: Randy was smart, well-educated, opinionated, liberal, and had wide ranging interests. You'll not be surprised to know that he loved to argue. He and I shared very similar world views and political perspectives, yet there was no visit with Randy that didn't involve some kind of argument! As some of you noted, it was possible to change his mind, so the arguments never seemed tedious or pointless. As I'm thinking of him today, it suddenly occurs to me that this was his mechanism for learning, and that's why you all know him. Randy and I got along because he had that quality that I think I cherish above all others: curiosity. I'm filled with regret that I hadn't connected with him in two years. It was something on my list of things to do that I just didn't get to.

Thanks for your help on this, Scott.
I took the liberty of starting another thread, a eulogy of sorts, since I think now that his passing has been confirmed we might just want to let this one fade into the sunset. RIP, Randy. You will be genuinely missed.

I was certain this was the case. Many have passed during this pandemic from all causes without much fanfare (as have some of my family). As noted from the start...a good fellow to debate an issue with. May we all have as much notoriety in death as in life. It is far better than to live or to die...and have no one even notice. Randy was like an outlaw 911...your opinion of him was a matter of perspective (purist or not), but everyone had one. His words and works, like Ronin, Grady and Sims...will live on here long after he is gone. RIP...again.

His given name was Don. Randy was a nickname.

This thread has revealed the dark hearts among us. Despicable.
I didn't know Randy well, we only communicated via email and PM and I always enjoyed his posts. I was supposed to send him some special eggnog just after last Christmas but it was sold out everywhere, even at the manufacturer. He was the kind of soul, at least to me, that inspired going the extra distance because he was worth it. I am happy for Randy, his passing is just that, onto another adventure in some other realm or dimension or whatever. Godspeed Randy.

It's a little disappointing getting confirmation. The board won't be the same without the guy. Like him or not, he kept things interesting. Again RIP Webby! from the "crabmango"
