Will say the broadcast commentary was a little creepy. Not sure why Fox people couldn't be allowed to do it.
Yep. I think I was 11 for the first Space Shuttle launch. It didn't seem that amazing to me, but my parents were impressed. I saw a Space Shuttle launch from the opposite side of FL (yes, you can see it once it's high enough) in the early 90s and that pretty thoroughly impressed me. I then saw one in person , one of the last 2 or 3 launches. In person, it was impressive.

But not much compares to the first successful return of the of the SpaceX boosters. As you say, it feels like Sci-fi.

They're spending way too much time with the camera on Shatner.

I think there is an agenda there. His pre flight comment about 'fragility of the earth' struck a bit of a sour note with me.

Nichelle Nichols once said that Shatner was a camera hog. He's 90 and a member of the super sonic club so ramble on Bill.

Maybe I missed it, but it would have been cool to have video from inside the ship during the launch to see/hear Shatner's reaction.

I'll have to look for YT videos with his thoughts after the fact.

And there it is.

I bet it is a heck of a ride. The astonishing thing to me is a rocket like that is about the same speed as the F-15 Streak Eagle.

(9,843 feet) 27.57 seconds
(19,685 feet) 39.33 seconds
(29,685 feet) 48.86 seconds
(39,370 feet) 59.38 seconds
(49,212 feet) 77.02 seconds
(65,617 feet) 122.94 seconds
(82,021 feet) 161.02 seconds
(98,425 feet) 207.80 seconds

It does go higher than the airplane of course, but the F-15 did it back in 1975.

I would love a ride in either one!

Kirk is rambling on a bit, but I might be a tad loquacious myself after that flight

I have a good friend who is a former Navy F-18C pilot, developmental test pilot that went to the Air Force Test Pilot School (we sent 2 a year).

He said the F-15 was the most amazing aircraft he ever flew.

The "Streak Eagle" was purpose built.

Instead, it provides a real in-depth look at the preparations and technology required to go into space. I was particularly impressed (and surprised) at just how young (and obviously brilliant) the entire support team was! When I was their age I was barely a functioning adult. Anyway, I thoroughly enjoyed it.

My wife and I watched this last week. Excellent!
My hat is off to Bill (at 90 years old) for doing this. I don't know many other 90 year old men that would have the balls to do it.

Most 90 year olds wouldn't ever attempt it.

Interesting, why perform the Immelmann for the higher records vs just a climb? Easier or better to go through the sound barrier when in level flight? And seems the records could have been broken in even less time since, according to the video, they used mach 1.5, mach 1.8 and mach 2.0 for the last 3 records.
