Any P.J. O'Rourke fans?
Cindy just found this on one of the financial sites she visits...yeah, first bit is advertising bur can be skimmed past.
https://americanconsequences.com/pj-o-rourke-out-of-office/ "I played hooky from life for a week. Or maybe more than a week… I wasn’t counting. With no laptop, no iPad, no smartphone, (or cable TV or landline, for that matter), I wasn’t sure what day it was. I didn’t even leave an “Away” notice on my e-mail. Had I done so, it would have read something like, “If this message is urgent, call… Oh, heck, I don’t know… 911 or something.”"

No politics in this one....a nice essay that gives food for thought. Kind of his reflections after the death of a close friend. And, as he does...other stuff. I enjoyed the read. Hope others do as well.

Me too. He is funny and insightful at the same time. A modern satirist in the Jonathan Swift mold.

Funny dude.
He spoke at my college back in the day. I forget what book he was promoting at the time, but I have a signed copy somewhere in storage.

I really enjoyed his work in Car & Driver in the '80s, when I was a kid.

PJ was just absolutely hilarious when he was counterculture. Lampoon, Car & Driver, I used to just be in stitches. Later in life, he became an essayist, and that's just fine, but it seems like he lost his edge. Or maybe I changed.
I'll still read his stuff if I run across it, he was an icon from my past, but if the work doesn't hold my attention, I have no qualms against abandoning the article and moving on...

I believe that’s “Ass-engined Nazi slotcar” lol True story: I heard him speak while promoting his book, “Baby Boom“. It was an older audience and when it came to the Q&A at the end, the questions were, if I could be so bold, somewhat staid or even a little boring. When the opportunity arose I thought I'd try to have a little fun with PJ so I asked him if he had ever properly apologized for the aforementioned Porsche quote. He really came to life at the question and said that he had, and went on to say that he had owned a “964” for a couple of decades and that he was a true car guy and Porschephile. He added that maybe Porsche owners maybe were a little too thin skinned... Anyways, when it came time for the book signing, you can imagine my delight at the following: ![]() The book was good, but I'll treasure the inscription forever. Ps - Yes, I'm a huge PJ fan. BITD and still! ![]()
