When I was looking for the crate engine I put in my El Camino after 300,000 miles on the original engine the list of engines that will fit was nearly endless. For "just a few hundred more" there was always a next step up in power and torque. I rode with a buddy that had a 600 HP engine in his Elky and it was just a tire smoking nearly undriveable in the rain monster. I went for the $1,700 delivered to my door brand new GM crate engine with the 2 year 24,000 mile warranty. I bit less HP than 1,000 HP. ;)

I'm surprised by the port injection. I thought D/I was the new kid on the block.
(Speaking of block, an iron block is surprising, too.)

The power boat crowd will love this engine.

I bet an aluminum block was going to cost double or triple the cost of a cast iron block. Just a guess, but it the old cast iron block is strong and easy.

And the cost of warranty might factor into the equation.

(They were going to make it 1000 hp with the aluminum block, but decided to go with cast iron and add 4 more hp to compensate for the weight!)

DI is the current technology, but not with older engine designs. The Mark IV engine dates back to 1963

There ya go being practical. ;) Actually, I agree. For real world driving in a car of around say 3500 pounds, 300 to 400 horsepower is perfectly adequate. But that doesn't get the car guy posting boards buzzing..

Yea, several friends were puzzled by my choice of a base 350 to replace the 305 that was worn out. I simply never have cared about stop light racing, at all. I just wanted enough power to get on the interstate in a reasonable speed and to run down the highway in full lockup at 2,200 RPM at 70 to 75 MPH without having to come out of lockup for every little hill.

a friend of mine used to run a famous racing shop.
He ran a super comp dragster with an engine he built: 454 based iron block, single 4 bbl card, naturally aspirated on gasoline.
I asked him how much HP it made, he said it dyno'd at 1050 but it was fairly mild and would last for years without having to be opened up.
I have no idea how much it cost or how much HP they could get out of one that wasn't "mild".
It sure sounded good tho.

Everyone should go see a top fuel dragster at least once. The sound and sight of a 7,000+ HP monster getting to 300 MPH in few seconds is something that can't be described, if needs to be experienced in person.

I don't care if someday an electric dragster can do 400 MPH in a 1,000 feet, without the sounds and sensation of million utility poles falling out of the sky and making your guts vibrate just needs to be seen in person.

Hell, for that matter, go down to the end of the track and watch a Pro Mod go through the beams.

Gas powered, V8 BB with power adders. It's a rowdy machine.

It's scary to think how fast those shoeboxes are going and how close to the edge the driver has to be to control it.

I just checked. 5.64et, 260mph.
