Buy a new gadget based on a new fad. Single purpose.
Use it a couple times.
Put it in the basement with the others, to become landfill later.

And then you have NYC water.
Get the water right and then you can make bagels and pizza dough, just like home.
I talked with a bagel shop owner in NC that used to make bagels in NYC. He brought the ovens from NY, imported all the supplies from the same folks in NY but he could never get the bagels to come out the same. The only thing he couldn't import was the water. Most of NYC water comes from reservoir dams upstate and is considered the best water in the nation. NYC pipes once it gets to the city is another thing.

I miss the old luncheonette in my Brooklyn neighborhood were we used to get them as kids.

U-Bets is definitely the only syrup to use. I'm glad its still easy to get around here.

I used to get mine at Eisenberg’s Sandwich Shop on 5th Ave…..sat on those orange padded bar stools. Grilled cheese, fries, pickle, chocolate egg creams.

I had an egg cream every Wednesday walking home from religious instruction. Our Mom walked my sister and I home and we past Bernie and Leo's luncheonett. I got an egg cream, my sister a lime rickey or cherry coke and mom a Manhattan Special. Some of the best days! We always had bottles of Fox's U-bet in the house. Seltzer was delivered every 2 weeks by the soda man in ancient squirt bottles in 8 compartment wooden cases that he carried up to our apartment. Brooklyn in the early 60's was magical.

I have never heard of an egg cream. Is this a northern thing?

I'm from the northern tier and I don't think there is an egg cream with 500 miles of here.

I was introduced to egg creams by my college friend. He is Jewish and from Long Island. I loved, loved, loved going home with him to visit. Egg creams, knishes, Hebrew National hot dogs, matzo ball soup, pot cheese on toast, and going into the city for NY pizza.
I wasn't a big fan of the tongue sandwiches or the gefilte fish, though.

It’s a NYC thing. I’m in northern NY 300 miles from NYC and nobody around here knows what I am talking about…

Quick history. Can’t embed this one

One of my favorite NYC/L.I. foods is the Bialy. So much better than a bagel. Around here, nobody heard of them. We have one bagel shop that offers them but I tried them and it wasn’t even close

The bialy dude Warren lived directly across the street from me. Great family and great business. He sells his product around the world. He used to drop off bialys regularly. The egg cream is 100% NYC Jewish thing.

Gotta say, an egg cream is not appealing, at all.

Hershey's chocolate milk, yes.

Diluting a chocolate milk with water, carbonated no less, is a hard, hard no.

I’ll try anything once. I’ll reserve judgment until then. No speculations

It’s not really any stranger than a root beer float. Sorta reminds me of that but without the chunks of ice cream.

It sounds weird, but if you tried it, I’ll bet you’d like it. Maybe not a fanatic, but you’d like it.

Not a huge fan of root beer floats. Might have had one, in my life. I like root beer, I grew up where it was made locally, so I've had some good root beer and don't want to waste it.

It's like a Mimosa cocktail. I love champagne and I love orange juice. No way I'm wasting a glass of champagne by putting OJ in it.

As for the egg cream, let's say that I won't even drink a chocolate milk if it isn't Hershey's. I've tried the other brands, all of them suck. It's a flavor profile that I'm pretty picky about, so I know I won't like it.

I like sparkling water too, but not flavored sparkling waters, or sweet ones.

I'm a flawed individual...

One root beer float in your life?

Do you think it is a waste of ice cream or a waste of milk to make a milk shake?

Is it a waste of an apple to cover it in melted caramel?

I always preferred the Hershey syrup in a can over the squeeze bottle…no idea if it was any different and I can’t find it at the store anymore anyway but thoughts of the canned stuff brings back good memories

Anyways, you’re not flawed, just set in your ways. Me too I guess…..especially when it comes to pizza. Don’t mess with it.
