Stout Beer

Saugatuck Neapolitan Milk Stout.
On reco from Cabman...I decided to try some!

Not bad at all...and I usually prefer IPA's. 6% abv

My only complaint is the cans won't fill my beer glass up.

You need to get the barrel aged Neapolitan. It's more expensive but well worth it if you like something with a "boozy" kick to it.

I'm a Porter/Stout guy when Fall hits. I need to get 10 gallons brewed up! That and my Scotch Ale.

Now, some here know how highly I speak of Blue Mountain's Dark Hollow. I rank this a VERY close second. Watch your temp when you pour. It gets better as it warms.

If I run into any, I'll give it a shot. I love stouts, the stouter the better.

I was in Grunst Bros in Big Rapids when I picked this up. All they had besides were two diff ales.
It might be one that is only available at their outlets. (in Kazoo or Saugatuck)

The Neapolitan has a fairly sweet taste to it. As the label says, hints of strawberry, vanilla and chocolate. Good stuff.

We are in a golden age of microbreweries and lots of very varied beers.

With that said, I personally just don't understand or care for fruity beers. chocolate or coffee, or the infinite varieties of flavored beer. I really don't understand the appeal of IPAs.



We recently stayed at the fancy hotel at West Baden springs and they serve Guinness on draw, and they actually know how to serve it right with the perfect head on it. This is after I just had to take a few sips before sitting down in the lobby to savor the beer and have a conversation with some friends.

Enjoy the varied flavored beers, I will leave the supply for you. I will stick to the traditional stouts, and lagers and Pilsners. Burp.

I thought most beer folks thought that most stouts have chocolate and coffee notes (not necessarily brewed with either or with either added, although there are some that do have them added).

And yes, I do love a Guinness Extra Stout. The draught in the cans and bottles has no flavor compared to the extra stout. If it's on-tap, that's another story.

There are all sorts of good Stouts out there that don't have the different flavors added. Chocolate is part of the flavor profile of a good stout but it'll have a bit more of a roasted flavor to it than a sweet. It also depends on what yeast and hops you use as to what flavor profile you get. I made a porter once using California ale yeast for one 5 gallon batch and English ale yeast for the other. Two completely different flavor profiles from just the yeast.

Also not a fan of beers with extra crap added to them. That said for stouts I do like my Guinness, but the one thing I'd ask for before a Guinness is Sam Smith's Oatmeal Stout.

Eww, stout. Last time I drank it, it was the mid '80s.

Our new IT boss Paul Harper had just come from the Guiness factory in Ireland and took us to the pub and bought us a round. The other boys said to me "I can't drink this ****." I said jokingly "Yes you can. You want to keep your job you drink it and pretend you are enjoying it."

Long long ago in my single days I had a beer fridge in the garage, stocked with at least a dozen different beers. I always sprinkled in some Guinness. I had several buddies come over knowing I always had cold beer on hand. I made them stand on a X put on the garage floor, close their eyes, turn 360 and they had to drink what ever they grabbed.

I like tasty beers, but this was 35+ years ago so no microbreweries and a restricted beer selection in Oklahoma. The good friends would bring along their beer and sprinkle it around in the fridge.

Most of my buddies did not care for the Guinness and just wanted a Budweiser. Ahh to be a 20 something single guy and buddies. We told a few jokes and had some good laughs.

^^^ I remember those days. The beer selection was terrible..esp if living where I was.
My favorite was Bud.

Now...there is a great beer from almost every brewery...and the breweries are all over the place.
