Knife and fork, what be that LOL

That place looks a nice beachy sorta place to have a burger and drink or three.

I grew up a couple of miles from where the first Whataburger outside of Texas was opened, and I loved it as a kid. The buildings used to be built as A-Frames, and you could walk up the steps to the mezzanine to eat. I stopped eating any type of fast food many, many years ago, but with the advent of Whataburger now moving into so many new markets (mine included--at least way out in the 'burbs), I may visit just to relive the childhood memories. I can still remember how those burgers, fries and shakes tasted.

8:00AM and I am jonesing for a burger. Best around these parts is Five Guys.

Shaun @ Tru6 10-30-2021 05:13 AM

If you aren't using half a roll of paper towel while eating a burger, are you really eating a burger?

Oklahoma burger and others

No, never

In-N-Out makes a fine burger, best large chain fast food burger I have had, good milk shakes, fries are weak

I can think of 4 or 5 places off the top of my head here in town that are hole in the wall burger joints that have better everything than any chain

May need to hit Tiny's or Hagen's for lunch. Sweet potato fries at Hagen's I could eat every day. Best ever was the Earl of Sandwich. Great burger with grilled onions,, did not need anything, mustard lettuce, perfect. Fries were good too, and the club sandwich, was excellent too.. A block or two from Memorial Auditorium, old Cambodian couple. He died, and then it was gone.

My wife knows the guy runs the Whataburger in her home town. Always a fine meal, perfect fries

To further the debate, what makes a better burger. Flame broiled or flat top?

upsscott 10-30-2021 07:51 AM

I prefer flame broiled but flat top, when done right is good too.

Here I don't think there is a "better," only a different. I became a smash burger convert some time ago but still love a grilled burger. In the same vein, the OK burger and White Castles are just as good as griddled and grilled. Same goes for steaks. I typically do cast iron because you can make a pan sauce. But wood grilled ribeyes can't be beat either.

Not better, just different. YMMV.

These WCs were phenomenal as were the truffle fries.

Look at Shaun hawking his DIY burgers on a Whataburger thread :)

Easy bud.

Back to WB, it’s my favorite fast food chain. By a long shot. Even their special ketchup is good.

I do a regular burger with jalapeños. Back in the day, I had cheese. Now I even skip the fries.

Mentioned above, Shake Shake. Easily the most expensive fast food burger I have ever bought. And it’s relatively tiny. Really good for sure, but damn. The are really proud of that thing.

TimT 10-30-2021 08:15 AM

I never tried Whataburger..Have done Shake Shack, In&Out Smashburger,5 guys.. Umami burger...

Here on LI we have a great place

All American

I am definitely guilty of food evangelism sharing my love for great food and hoping it inspires others to make their taste buds a little happier.

Smashburger is great, same as Shake Shack but you have to order a double at SS to make it worthwhile.

stevej37 10-30-2021 08:27 AM

Last year, I had a Classic Burger at Cheeburger Cheeburger.
I think it was about $12 for just the burger. It was drowning in cheese.
One bite and I knew I should have ordered it with none.
Just don't like the huge amounts of cheese anymore.

fintstone 10-30-2021 10:21 AM

I think that when we mix comparisons of fast food with other choices (homemade or some of the frou-frou and elaborate/expensive burgers) we risk confusing the issue. For me, they are entirely different things. I can order my $2 chain broiled whopper minus mayo from the local Burger King from my phone ap and and be eating it $2 and 2 minutes later. I cannot even make it at home for that price...or that fast. If I am really hungry, I can add an order of 8 ghost pepper chicken nuggets for another $1.49. I can do the same almost anywhere in the country and it is uniformly the same. I do not compare that with gong to a restaurant and spending $20 and a hour. My time is valuable as well...and If I am making $80hr, the fancy sit down burger cost me almost $100 more than the Whopper. So, it depends on situation for me.

I have had good food at a 5 Guys, but the one closest to me is not very good...and they are expensive compared to McD or BK. I try to mix it up with some chicken sandwiches from Popeyes or Chikfil A when I am in the city about 30 minutes away (non locally) and when I travel, places I can't eat at home like Bob's Burgers, Rex's and Lotaburger in NM , Krystals, in the SE, White Castle in the NE, In N Out, FatBurger, or even Wienerschnitzel for hot dogs and chili cheese fries (don't have them here) out west.

Lots of small, local places make great burgers. Red Robin makes a pretty good burger for a sit down chain. Places like Smashburger are good as well, but not as common. Juts need more time and more money.

MF Shaun can cook.

flatbutt 10-30-2021 06:03 PM

My most recent burger purchase was Smashburger. It didn't make me ill but I won't be going back. There's a Whataburger about 20 miles from home so it'll need to wait until I'm in that area.

mattdavis11 10-30-2021 06:15 PM

We have two in town. One is a Whataburger, the other a Whataripoff. Seriously, there are differences from location to location, and I've been around them my entire life, in many places, in Texas.

shadowjack1 10-31-2021 06:55 AM

When I worked in Texas I would stop at a Whataburger on I-10 Between the La. state line and Houston. That place was as clean as it could be and someone was walking around asking if you needed any more ketchup, mustard or anything else. Family owned and always a nice place to visit.

VINMAN 10-31-2021 07:09 AM

Iv'e tried just about all the big burger places. Five Guys still ranks my #1

.

Sooner or later 10-31-2021 07:10 AM

For fast food burgers a whatabirger is tough to beat.

Here is a five star place for Shaun.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1635689115.jpg

I went to our local 5 Guys about 6 months after they opened it so I gave them time to "get it right." (had them elsewhere and they were pretty good). The food was not especially bad, but the place was filthy. The floors in the customer area were so greasy that you had to actually hold on to the walls to walk and there were no clean tables. Trash was piled up around the trash cans that had clearly overflowed many hours earlier. The floors around the drink dispensers were covered with huge puddles of different colors/types of sodas. We are in a largely rural area and the chain fast food places are always clean and the food is as good and much cheaper...so this one was a real anomaly. It may have been a one-time thing, but we have not been back.

mattdavis11 10-31-2021 08:53 AM

I work in Austin, Texas, but no longer live there, thank goodness. Austin has 5 guys, In-N-Out, along with all the other chains, and they are ok, but there are a few local, smaller, up and comers that are better.

Mighty Fine and P. Terry's are two worth the visit. P. Terry's only uses Angus beef, which I believe is a better tasting beef. YMMV.

cabmandone 10-31-2021 08:57 AM

All this talk of burgers just brings back the pain of Wendys getting rid of the pretzel bacon pub burger :(

But I'm on board with Culvers! Good eats. I haven't tried 5guys yet but my son has. He said it's "pretty good". Not exactly a strong endorsement.

stevej37 10-31-2021 09:09 AM

^^^
Culvers has a 'Pretzel Haus Pub Burger'. It's seasonal, just like their Walleye Sandwich'. I think both end sometime in Aug and return the next spring.
That bottom layer of fresh onions is what makes their burger.

https://www.chewboom.com/wp-content/...er-678x381.jpg

5 guys doesn't have a drive thru. Ordering inside reminds me of subway...slow and too many decisions to make and it's higher priced for what you get.

mattdavis11 10-31-2021 09:15 AM

There is a Culvers down the road from work, but I've never tried them out. Thanks for the heads up.

stevej37 10-31-2021 09:46 AM

^^^ My advice is...on your first try...order a Butterburger Deluxe Single. The double has too much meat for the fixin's. Then go from there for the next visit.

Shaun @ Tru6 10-31-2021 05:02 PM

These are the kinds of places I live for, especially when finding them by random chance. Any place that can have a slot on Diners, Drive-ins & Dives is a place for me.

Smashburger is good also. Not very many of them around here yet.

Grand opening of Grand Rapids Wahlburger today.

flipper35 11-01-2021 10:16 AM

Places I don't go for a burger are In-n-Out, Five Guys and Culvers.

Culvers does have good buffalo chicken strips and I do like the fries. Custard is excellent of course and we do eat there often, but none of our family will order a burger.

Five Guys I have only eaten at in San Diego and Dubuque. The burgers were kind of wedge shaped and meh and burnt on the edges. Maybe they aren't all like that, but these were at both places. Fries were fine and you do get a good helping of them.

We don't have an In-n-Out nearby and that doesn't bother me at all. I ate at some in CA and don't care to go back.

The Hardee's clone of a Sourdough Jack is pretty good.

I always wanted to go there but it was just too far from Tulsa to justify the trip. Ironically, now that I don’t live in Oklahoma anymore, I’m closer to the stupid thing. Still too far to justify the trip, but if I’m ever in the area…

SCadaddle 11-01-2021 11:41 AM

I used to enjoy a whataburger when I could order in the lobby and have a seat inside the restaurant. Then came this pandemic. Lobby closed. Everything is drive-thru. After waiting in the traffic line at least 10 minutes and the line not moving on more than one occasion, I have given up on a whataburger. It's just not worth it.

GH85Carrera 11-01-2021 11:48 AM

The Meers buffalo burger was pretty good on one of the visits we made to Meers. No doubt if you get to Meers, would not miss the place, as it is just about all there is in Meers, OK.

for me its the pandemic inspired on-line order. not all my lunches are thought out events..sometimes it a quick inspiration. the Habit burgers does not allow walk up orders anymore. all online stuff. almost 2 years since i had a burger from The Habit.

javadog 11-01-2021 11:57 AM

The Whataburgers local to me move cars through the 2 drive-through lanes pretty quickly but the lobbies are open so I never go through the drive-through.

I’m not a fan of online ordering because I want to eat food when it’s just been cooked. Fries turn to crap pretty quickly and burgers don’t last much longer.

Plus, I like the unlimited free refills you can get in the dining room on soft drinks.

Shaun @ Tru6 11-01-2021 11:58 AM

Is Meers worth the 3 hour drive from Dallas?

stevej37 11-01-2021 12:00 PM

I like a beer with my burger. Before going to the drive-thru, I hit the closest gas station for a single. Then after picking up the food...I park in the lot and enjoy!

Not in my opinion.

It is part of the total Wichita Mountain Wildlife Refuge experience. See the free range bison, longhorn, deer, prairie dogs, and the occasional elk, take a drive up Mt Scott, day hike The Narrows or 40' hole, and end the day with a Meers burger.

The joint is over a 100 years old, has slanted floors, no table or chairs match. The burgers claim to fame has more to do with it's size. Not another place like it.

Shaun @ Tru6 11-01-2021 12:51 PM

OK, thanks. More time for BBQ in the Dallas area then, but I do love a road trip for food. Have driven 3+ hours for dinner on a few occasions.
