For fast food burgers a whatabirger is tough to beat.

Here is a five star place for Shaun.

I went to our local 5 Guys about 6 months after they opened it so I gave them time to "get it right." (had them elsewhere and they were pretty good). The food was not especially bad, but the place was filthy. The floors in the customer area were so greasy that you had to actually hold on to the walls to walk and there were no clean tables. Trash was piled up around the trash cans that had clearly overflowed many hours earlier. The floors around the drink dispensers were covered with huge puddles of different colors/types of sodas. We are in a largely rural area and the chain fast food places are always clean and the food is as good and much cheaper...so this one was a real anomaly. It may have been a one-time thing, but we have not been back.

I work in Austin, Texas, but no longer live there, thank goodness. Austin has 5 guys, In-N-Out, along with all the other chains, and they are ok, but there are a few local, smaller, up and comers that are better.

Mighty Fine and P. Terry's are two worth the visit. P. Terry's only uses Angus beef, which I believe is a better tasting beef. YMMV.

All this talk of burgers just brings back the pain of Wendys getting rid of the pretzel bacon pub burger

But I'm on board with Culvers! Good eats. I haven't tried 5guys yet but my son has. He said it's "pretty good". Not exactly a strong endorsement.

^^^
Culvers has a 'Pretzel Haus Pub Burger'. It's seasonal, just like their Walleye Sandwich'. I think both end sometime in Aug and return the next spring.
That bottom layer of fresh onions is what makes their burger.

5 guys doesn't have a drive thru. Ordering inside reminds me of subway...slow and too many decisions to make and it's higher priced for what you get.

There is a Culvers down the road from work, but I've never tried them out. Thanks for the heads up.

^^^ My advice is...on your first try...order a Butterburger Deluxe Single. The double has too much meat for the fixin's. Then go from there for the next visit.

These are the kinds of places I live for, especially when finding them by random chance. Any place that can have a slot on Diners, Drive-ins & Dives is a place for me.

Places I don't go for a burger are In-n-Out, Five Guys and Culvers.

Culvers does have good buffalo chicken strips and I do like the fries. Custard is excellent of course and we do eat there often, but none of our family will order a burger.

Five Guys I have only eaten at in San Diego and Dubuque. The burgers were kind of wedge shaped and meh and burnt on the edges. Maybe they aren't all like that, but these were at both places. Fries were fine and you do get a good helping of them.

We don't have an In-n-Out nearby and that doesn't bother me at all. I ate at some in CA and don't care to go back.

The Hardee's clone of a Sourdough Jack is pretty good.

I always wanted to go there but it was just too far from Tulsa to justify the trip. Ironically, now that I don’t live in Oklahoma anymore, I’m closer to the stupid thing. Still too far to justify the trip, but if I’m ever in the area…

I used to enjoy a whataburger when I could order in the lobby and have a seat inside the restaurant. Then came this pandemic. Lobby closed. Everything is drive-thru. After waiting in the traffic line at least 10 minutes and the line not moving on more than one occasion, I have given up on a whataburger. It's just not worth it.

The Meers buffalo burger was pretty good on one of the visits we made to Meers. No doubt if you get to Meers, would not miss the place, as it is just about all there is in Meers, OK.

for me its the pandemic inspired on-line order. not all my lunches are thought out events..sometimes it a quick inspiration. the Habit burgers does not allow walk up orders anymore. all online stuff. almost 2 years since i had a burger from The Habit.

The Whataburgers local to me move cars through the 2 drive-through lanes pretty quickly but the lobbies are open so I never go through the drive-through.

I’m not a fan of online ordering because I want to eat food when it’s just been cooked. Fries turn to crap pretty quickly and burgers don’t last much longer.

Plus, I like the unlimited free refills you can get in the dining room on soft drinks.

Is Meers worth the 3 hour drive from Dallas?

I like a beer with my burger. Before going to the drive-thru, I hit the closest gas station for a single. Then after picking up the food...I park in the lot and enjoy!

Not in my opinion.

It is part of the total Wichita Mountain Wildlife Refuge experience. See the free range bison, longhorn, deer, prairie dogs, and the occasional elk, take a drive up Mt Scott, day hike The Narrows or 40' hole, and end the day with a Meers burger.

The joint is over a 100 years old, has slanted floors, no table or chairs match. The burgers claim to fame has more to do with it's size. Not another place like it.

OK, thanks. More time for BBQ in the Dallas area then, but I do love a road trip for food. Have driven 3+ hours for dinner on a few occasions.
