I did something very irresponsible, I bought a M6 project last weekend in Dallas. It runs and drives but "oh my" does it need love....and lots of it.

I have a Getrag265 out of a '81 E12. The problem is that I have a '71 targa in the early stages of restoration sitting in the garage. If I can convince a friend to loan me their garage for a couple days I could probably get the transmission and suspension bits installed. I've been sitting on the transmission for almost 5 years so clearly I'm not in a hurry

E28's have a rear taillight seal issue and a trunk lid seal issue. It's a bad design and it's important to stay on top of it, otherwise you'll have a tire-well full of water which will then find it's way into the back seat and you can end up with a rusted trunk floor and a ruined carpet... (I was hugely relieved to find my trunk floor is still solid and rust free. The carpet is another matter,
Don't do this:
Somewhere along the line a PO glued the seal onto the body and the taillight housing (out of frustration, I guess, because the pass side wasn't glued, doesn't leak and the drivers side was still leaking)
I have to clean up this mess and then I still have to fix the leak.

It is weird to me that the German engineers didn't design drainage into the trunk and spare tire well. E28s can let water into the trunk from so many places - rear window, trunklid, taillights, license plate lights, antenna, C-pillar trim, I'm sure there's more. The taillights especially - two big opening, sealed by only a thin strip of foam, right where aerodynamics wants to suck rain into the trunk cavity.

Have you ever seen cars with drainage in the trunk? I don't think it can be done, way too close to the exhaust. On the e60 and possibly others they placed electronics in below the spare tire, that way you know when you have a leak in the trunk, LOL, unfortunately I am being serious about that.

Here's the weep holes in the bottom of the tire well. Tiny little things. Probably a good idea to make clearing these a regular maintenance chore....

Having a LHD car in Japan was more of a status symbol. You could afford to have a non-JDM vehicle and it was cool. lol In 1982, LHD cars were even more a status symbol than today. My ex used to drive a VW Passat and an Alfa when she was growing up in Osaka in the 80s. Then she switched to AMG Benzes. The 893s loved Benzes.

E21's were the same.

I had to replace the tail light seals and trunk seal in order to get my E21 dry after a wash.


Question for the early BMW guys, I am considering a 123 Dizzy for my M10 engine, my Points / condenser dizzy is making me mad and I am happy spending sub $500 to make that issue go away. Hard cold starts being the biggest issue.

Thoughts?
