Advice for some friends on cycling in Palm Spring...
We have some friends that are going to Palm Springs for the first time and their primary form of exercise is biking(not motor bikes). Have been to Palm Springs a few times and have hiked quite a bit but not biked.
What should they carry if they leave the city? My suggestions have been: Sufficient water Cell phone GPS Repair kit for tires Anything else? Thanks in advance! |

That list is fine, they should just bring what they would normally bring when they're cycling out of town. Palm Springs will have really nice weather right now, the high temps are pretty much done for the year.

They might consider trying to contact a bike club there to get some idea of safe routes.
My impression is the place in general is not bike friendly so sticking to known "safe" routes might be the way to go.

Don't do it between April and October if they can help it. It is very hot and dry during those months.

A light jacket because weather can get a bit cold at times. How far out of the city are they planning to go? Between Palmsprings, Cathecral City onto Rancho Mirage are really safe if they stick to the main roads.

2 years ago I put my road race bike in it's travel case and took off for Palm Springs. Had an amazing 8 days riding around down there. Rode and hiked each day. Put about 800kms on the bike and had a great time.
My recommendation, for what it is worth... Reach out to the folks at Palm Spring Cyclery. www.pscylclery.com. My trip was hastily organized. The wife booked my condo and I booked my flight and left the next day.... But the folks at Palm Springs Cyclery were awesome. I went there as I had forgot to pack a couple of spare tubes and nutrition. The fellow that helped me out (I am embarrassed that I forget his name) hooked me up, took care of some of my bill even. Then gave me a few epic routes to ride and hooked me up with a local group to do a Saturday ride with. The service was beyond exceptional, especially considering I was a once a season type client. I have recommended them countless times based off that experience. I am looking forward to visiting them again and spending some money their now that Covid is easing.... I went in Feb, and the weather was perfect for riding and hiking. Cheers
