I did a ship's tour of Royal Caribbean's Ovation of the Seas. Loved it. It certainly looked a lot more high tech than the container ship. They are all interesting though.

I kinda miss being underway at sea but not enough to go back.
I can still remember my way around the forward compartment of a 688 class nuclear submarine but back aft in the engine room its sketchy. One thing I noticed in the vid is how few people there are. Merchant ships don't need large crews. |

That was my first thought when the video showed the mess hall and rec center....where do they fit everybody?

Compared to a US Navy ships, which have to fight and survive, merchant ships are actually manned properly in my mind. Shipping lanes are actually really well defined: https://shipsnow.com/ You can zoom in on the link and see where the big boys drive. I did an Air Boss tour on an Amphibious command ship that was steam powered. Yikes. Pictures of the bridges...I qualified for Officer of the Deck Underway and had my own watch section. ![]() ![]() As you can see, the bridge is a little less modern than the Merchant's. ![]() I will say that the engineering space on every Navy ship I have been one were immaculate and really interesting. I spent a lot of hours in the engineering spaces. Main engine room on a Frigate: ![]() https://www.maritimequest.com/warship_directory/us_navy_pages/frigates/inside_the_oliver_hazard_perry_class_page_3.htm

The amount of design and engineering in something that big with that many different kinds of systems is incredible.

the CSCL GLOBE has a crew of 23
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CSCL_Globe A couple months ago I went to San Diego to see a nephew graduate from Marine Corp bootcamp. I went with a brother-in-law who is retired Army. We got to San Diego with a couple hours with nothing to do so we went to visit the VA cemetary on Fort Rosecrans which is on Point Loma. From the cemetary one can see the sub base. I was looking at a couple boats in the water and I saw how much the Navy has shrunk. When I was there 30 years ago there were 2 tenders, 2 drydocks and maybe 24 subs. This time both tenders are gone, only a couple subs I could see and only one drydock. Last edited by otto_kretschmer; 11-10-2021 at 08:14 AM.. Reason: graduation graduate |

I love big ships, and would love to voyage on one at some point. Neat video.

Cool vid, well done. Who chooses the paint scheme on these things? There's some crazy clown colors going on in some of those engineering spaces. That lime green.

Get off my lawn!
|
I know pretty much nothing about large ships except cruise ships have lots of food.
![]() I have toured a few of the old WW2 ships but old Navy ships are just cool antiques in comparison. My wife gets sea sick on a glass bottom boat moving slowly around a calm bay, so we will never get to try a open ocean cruise.

An entertainer on a cruise ship had a good joke: "There is a lot of debate as to how many passengers there are onboard the ship at the moment. Captain says there are 5,000, the gym manager says there are only 200 passengers, and the food and beverage mangers claims there are 15,000 on board."
