I have flown on hundreds of 737s. You want to get the aisle seats, in the middle of the aircraft where the plane is fattest, directly over the wings. Sit in the exit row, if you want, just don’t sit one row in front of it.

Quite right about the back of the bus. When we moved to Hawaii at gvt expense, I paid for the upgrade to 1st (literally cost me $50 each for the 4 of us). Then the GOV decided while in Hawaii that I needed to go to a course in Florida, again I paid for the upgrade. A few years ago our family of 4 went to London for a Christmas vacation and flew 1st.

The difference between coach and 1st is a vast chasm. No issue with amount of luggage, food is gratis, seats are large enough for humans. The big difference on those long distance hauls is feeling refreshed upon arrival vice like you got there by hanging onto the tail of the aircraft.

The other gigantic difference is that the gate agents, ticketing agents, flight attendants, and pretty much everyone involved treat you like a human being. Heck, even at most airports a 1st class ticket gets you to a special line for TSA type stuff, Heathrow certainly has a special place.

I'm no stranger to flying in back though. But highly recommend 1st/business for trans-continental or to the middle of the Pacific.

If I were king and could fix this mess, I would recommend to the airlines and TSA to just start treating people better. Some folks just won't notice and keep taking everything they own on the plane while wearing their PJ's but it would be a start.

A guy that used to work for me said while we were talking about this: the airlines have 1st, business, and coach. They need to have a Human class and treat people accordingly.

One of the gals I dated in flight school was also a flight student. She had been a flight attendant and decided to move up front and move the sticks. She is still flying for one of the majors, set to retire in a few years.

She went to the CH-46 RAG in San Diego and a lot her flight attendant friends lived in the area and flew out of Lindbergh. Their stories were unbelievable, even back in the 80's.

After 9/11, so much changed that made the whole commercial flight experience a complete grind and the TSA and the airlines have all been complicit, including charging for luggage which has people trying to take more crap into the cabin area than Hannibal took over the Alps.

I also know a number of airline pilots and they tell me everyone is on edge, "you can sense it..."

Since I live two hours from the nearest large airport, I'll drive rather than fly if the drive is ten hours or less. It pencils out, trust me. I have at various times flown 3 times a month, often 4. I know all the tricks and efficiencies, how to best navigate the entire experience, trust me, but I hate it. I will be flying to Tucson in January, flying for the forst time in years. I am trying to arrange meetings accross the country so I can drive

Some the recommendation in this thread I had not considered but have been spot on.
They need to charge per carry on, not checked.

Charge Greyhound prices for plane seats and this is what you get.

The lowest common denominator is now flying, there is no more elegance in air travel.
I'm thinking you haven't flown latley. Prices are ski high for the most simple flight anywhere. We just flew and there were no unruly people and the booze sales that I saw all around me was nothing.

I'd do it....but just one carry on per.

It would also help with the TSA lines and help with security issues as well.

Watching any old episode of Cops, if you see a car called to an apartment house for a domestic dispute, you’ll see this behavior every time. Nine times out of 10 it’s a fat young woman.

Really? 9 times out of 10? Every incident I’ve seen usually involves a man who is angry about masks. I know there are instances of women losing it but they don’t look like the type the cops tv show showed. They look entitled.

These issues pre-date Covid.

And the people that act badly don’t act badly only on airplanes.

Charge for the personal bag, carry on, laptop bag and make it reasonable for one item, start adding zeros after that.

Fly Southwest airlines, get in the A group, dress nicely, check all your crap, bring a book on the plane, schmooze with the pilots and the attendants on the way in, smile a lot and eat all of the peanuts they give you. Drink vodka tonics, with a lemon wedge, but not to exccess.

Act like Cary Grant, when he was behaving himself.

The airlines that I fly on already charge for carry on bags, same price as first checked bag. That would be Delta and Sun Country, mostly. I’m sure that they all do, except Southwest.

What happened to the rule - If you are too wide you have to buy two seats? This happened to me in spades the other day. As we arrived in the waiting area - I commented I sure hope I don't have to sit next to that "person". Yes - Southwest. Sure enough, it finally happened.

What a fun departure that was for Barbara Billingsley, Leslie Nielsen, Peter Graves, Robert Stack, and Lloyd Bridges.

Good one

It's been one of my major gripes about air travel for years.

I am not sure where you are flying the prices are still too cheap.

Take a look at Orlando Florida to NY $180 round trip. Less than a speeding ticket.

I have not flown since the beginning of the Covidian Era. My last flight was from Miami to St. Lucia in July 2019.

I've taken three MI-FL round-trip flights this year. All three were the lowest fares I've ever paid.
Rental cars are a whole different story.

This is a direct result of the cabins being maximized for more passengers, people becoming more overweight, people becoming more hostile and intolerant of others and the rules, the TSA strip club dance routine in the cattle pen chaos priming it all, illogical boarding procedures, plus the bs hidden fees for stored luggage.
The perfect storm.

The airlines try to add movies, games, etc to give back the feeling of comfort but that doesn't always work.

Plus the airline have to race to the bottom for ticket prices.
If all the tickets are $500 vs $150, people will go "meh", suck it up, and fly less.
But they will not pay a thin dime more for their collection of elephant trunks. Personal responsibility.
