Razor blades
How many shaves do you get out of simple double edge blades?
|
I think I've tried every brand of disposable shavers there is.
I keep coming back to the Shick ST2 (slim twin double edge) Approx a dozen shaves out of them. Need to use the push and rinse on them to make them last. |
I used to change out my double edge blade once a week. Then I read a tip about wiping the blade off, wiping down towads the edge, after each use. Since then I am able to get a months worth of use out of the blade.

Can't remember where I saw it - maybe a consumer piece - but the point made was what influenced a razor edge's life the most was moisture left on the blade which led to corrosion of the metal. |
^^^ I'll venture that the hardness of the water makes a diff also.
|
ah, yes, I guess wiping the blade is the key to longevity. Thanks.

In a previous discussion I reported my preference for a simple, single-blade yellow disposable razor often available in bags at Dollar Store. Tim Hancock then posted his concurrence, saying "Finally, something we can agree on." I was amused and proud.
One major problem with the double-blade razors is that hair gets wedged into the area between the blades and it's not easy to just rinse out. |
Supe, I would expect you'd have to use a Krypton blade....
I use a triple cartridge, which is now hard to find. I can use a disposable 2 blade, but I prefer the nice handle. |
^^^ Supe
The Shick ST2 has a 'push to rinse' top that separates the blades to rinse out the hairs. |
I only need to shave twice a week and use a Gillette Mach something razor.
So I get a couple of months out of a blade. Saves me a few bucks. There’s a reason companies make products based on the “razor blade theory”. Sell the handle cheap and charge $$$$ for the blades |

I've said it before and I'll say it again...
Buy into the gimmick. Gillette Fusion Power. Battery operated handle, vibrating head, best shave EVER! I can and do shave down, up, sideways, backways, upways, upsidedownways, and never ever a nick. The vibrating blade pulls away from the skin enough to never catch it and tear you up. I also get a few months of 2-3 times a week shaves (I mix in between with an electric). Yes..it's good for shaving other things. Never a cut. NEVER. |

Before I grew a beard I used to shave every day. By far the best shave was from a safety razor I have a Mercur handle which has a little heft to it and feels good in your hand.
Shark blades run $20 for 100. I would typically put a new blade in every week, despite the fact that the old blade was still good @$20 for 100 I didn't care I just changed them out. I have tried other blades as well I found the Sharks to be just right, Feather blades were extremely sharp, I could never get the hang of them. I still use it to trim around the beard, I have not bought blades in 5 years now since I barely use it anymore. https://i.ebayimg.com/images/i/36104...-1/s-l1000.jpg |

I too use a Mercur safety razor. Best blades so far are Astra. I used Wilkensen prior but the Astras are so much sharper. I couldn't read the font but memory says made in Russia for Gilette. (total WAG there). There is a minor quality control issue in that some blades have been "wonky." But most are amazing. My wife picked up the Mercur the other day cleaning the shower and cut herself. She was shocked with how sharp it was. By comparison? The yellow BIC's get used when I travel. They feel like a dull machete. They pull, hack, drag. Astra's neatly cut. Like a surgical tool.
My routine? Get my face drenched in hot water in the shower. Soap up beard. Apply a touch of conditioner for lubricity to soaped up beard. Shave away in shower. There is some skill here as I can't see anything. But, the benefits are so very worth it. No break outs. Great shave. It took me decades to figure this out. Try it. |
I've used Harry's for years. Blades and stuff delivered by USPS on your own schedule. Packaging is spiffy but wasteful. But now I see Harry's at costco except that it seems they only come with a new handle. Different # of blades per package vs competitors makes spot price comparison difficult. Probably not as advantageous as before.
