The original was on just last week. I watched most of it. A real classic!

The actor who played Tony is Richard Beymer.

The following year after WSS was made, 1962, he starred in "Hemmingway's Adventures of a Young Man" - a real cult classic and worth a look.

Huge bomb. Will never make the money it cost back. Big mistake not having known stars. It’s a musical with show tunes at 2 1/2 hours. Cruel and unusual punishment! Probably will do well in San Francisco. Cost 100 million to make. Millions more to promote. If they would have put Ariana Grande in as Maria, the millennials and J Xers would’ve gone to it. Young people love her. But nobody can replace Natalie wood. Natalie was already a big star when the original came out in 61. The new movie needed known stars.

Haven't been to the movies for a couple months. The new Matrix movie will be next.
WSS...no thanks.

What about Nightmare Alley?

stevej37 12-16-2021 12:05 PM

^^^ Never heard of it...is it good?

Shaun @ Tru6 12-16-2021 12:09 PM

Just came out, directed by Guillermo del Toro

stevej37 12-16-2021 12:12 PM

That...I will definitely go to see.
I forgot about it...

Shaun @ Tru6 12-16-2021 12:13 PM

I think I'm seeing it tomorrow night.

stevej37 12-16-2021 12:15 PM

^^ Please report back.

Shaun @ Tru6 12-16-2021 12:15 PM

Will do. Really looking forward to it. Did not see Antlers.

stevej37 12-16-2021 12:19 PM

I did. It was good and typical of his movies. (pans lab)
I won't say any more.

I vaguely remember the 40s version of nightmare alley. Looks really good.

I've seen the original once and I appreciate the craftsmanship that went into making the movie. Technically amazing with some of the tracking shots, etc. I can also understand why it was culturally significant at that time in history. I also very much enjoy the score for the movie, the singing and dancing does nothing for me but the music does. I don't think it needed to be remade but I'll give the remake a chance eventually. Not something that requires theater viewing, IMO.

Definitely want to see Nightmare Alley, preferably in the theater but not a requirement.
Definitely want to see Spiderman: No Way Home in the theater.
Definitely want to see The Matrix: Resurrections in the theater.

Missed Antlers but want to see it as well.

Shaun @ Tru6 12-17-2021 06:21 PM

Nightmare Alley. Not really a del Torro film. Or maybe one that he wrote and directed while on horse tranquilizers. It's recognizable as a del Toro movie, but it isn't.

Cate Blanchett was delicious. As was Rooney Mara.

Baz 12-17-2021 07:13 PM

Ooooo Cate!

sc_rufctr 12-17-2021 08:00 PM

I don't know why but whenever someone mentions "West Side Story" I think of "A Streetcar Named Desire".

STELLA!

I read a bunch of user reviews on RT. They are all over the place..I'll still see it next week.

Shaun @ Tru6 12-18-2021 04:33 AM

Just read through 3 pages of RT audience. it is a 69% audience score movie. The problem is it's not a del Torro story. Acting and sets and lighting were excellent. But they can't save it from not being a del Torro story. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts. I equate it to Wes Anderson's French Dispatch. I love Anderson and del Torro equally but for very different styles. French Dispatch was a huge disappointment.

WSS got expected reviews on RT. Definitely worth seeing in the theatre if you like musicals. I am (a little unfortunately) seeing it again tonight, old gf called and asked if I would take her. A burden I must bear.
