As one who sat through ****ing crimson peak I’m glad it’s not a de toro story.

Saw Spider-Man last night. Goofy but fun.

It's on Netflix until the end of the year.

What makes a story a "del Toro" story?

I've seen almost all of his movies. Nothing comes to mind when I think "del Toro."

Nightmare Alley. Not really a del Torro film. Or maybe one that he wrote and directed while on horse tranquilizers. It's recognizable as a del Toro movie, but it isn't.

Cate Blanchett was delicious. As was Rooney Mara.

Finally saw Nightmare Alley. One of the best I've seen in the last year...but I love grifter movies. (One of my all-time fav movies is The Grifters with John Cusak.)
Long movie...but not once was I bored.
Way more enjoyable to watch than the new Matrix movie. :)

Cate scared me in the Hobbit movies, but I liked it!

Cate is one of my favorite actresses. Could watch this scene over and over. 20 years ago.

Jared, I'm pretty sure everyone in the original cast was white with brown face. That's reason enough to make it again IMHO.

No, never bored but it didn't have the supernatural element that was both expected and needed. And he could have used the murdered girl to effect that. Probably just me, but I prefer del Torro films with female protagonists. Though I loved The Devil's Backbone.

Also ruined for me was every time Cooper spoke I expected Lady Gaga to show up a la A Star is Born. He used the exact same drawl. Many better picks for casting his role.

The Matrix movie was OK at best. That they had to create an entire scene/series of scenes acknowledging that the 3 movie sucked spoke volumes.

Angelica Huston, Cusak, and Annette Bening.

To me, del Torro characters are pieces of art that are created within a supernatural or fantasy story arc. It's like watching art be made. DT is a master at using lighting and very specific color palettes to paint his characters. When you look at his greatest movies, The Shape of Water, Pan's Labrynth, Devil's Backbone, they all have the same or similar lighting and palettes.

His character development is detailed and engaging. You can see how he builds the character over time adding more and more layers. More details. More story.

Nightmare Alley had the lighting and palette styles of these movies but lacked the very foundation of the supernatural or fantastic. And worse, it lacked the character development. Cate Blanchett was wasted, there was so much more that he could have done with her character. Cooper's story was underdeveloped. Everyone's was. It was a just a normal movie with a unique and beautiful look that fell short of being captivating, memorable.

That's why I say it wasn't a del Torro movie.

I can't remember where I saw it....maybe a youtube video on here? It was a tour of his home/living area.
He had props from most all of his movies..plus a lot more. A museum almost.
He seems like a real likeable guy.
