West Side Story

Not much to say except it is a near perfect version of the original story. Sets, choreography, SINGING, acting... Spielberg created a gem for all time that you will happily see to have your heart ripped in two.

This is kinda sacred... I hope it is as good as you say...

jcwade 12-10-2021 07:00 PM

The trailer looks great.
But they always do.

What a great job having Rita Moreno in the remake.

drcoastline 12-10-2021 11:00 PM

I don't usually like remakes. I know a lot of people liked the remake of A Star is Born but I didn't especially the ending where jack dies.

I don't expect this to be as good for me as the original, as Jeff said kinda sacred, but it looks promising and I am looking forward to seeing it.

Shaun @ Tru6 12-11-2021 03:40 AM

Don, that's the A Star is Born story arc.

I have to admit I wished a little that WSS could get a Once Upon a Time in Hollywood treatment for the ending.

Shaun, I am a two finger typer and rely on spell check because my left hand types faster then my right. Unfortunately spell check doesn't work on here for some reason, so sometimes things get posted and then go back and correct. SmileWavy

EDIT: See mistakes.

I enjoyed Once Upon A Time in Hollywood and La, La Land but somethings just shouldn't be toyed with.

A Once Upon A Time in Hollywood twist is fine, just make a new movie. WSS is based on Romeo and Juliette so make a new version with a new name and ad the twist but don't call it West Side Story.

I am introgued by the trailer to this movie and agree it largely remains true to the original. I do like that they found a way to subtly write Rita Moreno in, nice touch and stayed true to the original.

Way to many good/great movies have been redone only to screw them up.

Could you imagine a New Bullit, LeMans or Rocky?

flatbutt 12-11-2021 05:35 AM

Westside Story is one of my all time favs. It always struck me as odd that there was only one Puerto Rican in the original. If the remake is true to the music and story then I'll probably enjoy it.

Crowbob 12-11-2021 06:38 AM

The first time I saw WSS (TV) I was terrified when the gangs loaded up with knives. Also I mighta got me some Natalie wood.

speeder 12-11-2021 07:51 AM

It does look fantastic but I also sort of think that the original is sacred. Mixed feelings on this. At least it's not crap like a lot of current content.

Danimal16 12-11-2021 11:58 AM

One of my Favorites as well.

Saw a great version put on by the theater department at Saint Bonaventure High School in Ventura about a decade and a half ago, and an EPIC version put on by Oaks Christian High School two years earlier. In both cases, the student actors seemed to really identify with the characters, they were great productions.

It is a timeless story that seems to speak to many generations of American teen agers. Gotta see this new release (though I think the original movie is pretty special).

Shaun @ Tru6 12-11-2021 05:41 PM

I'm definitely seeing it again. I think it will be even better a second time. It will be slower, better to drink it all in, catch things that flew by the first time.

Agree..... can not understand why you would remake....

Tobra 12-15-2021 10:49 AM

If it is so great, why is it bombing so badly?

varmint 12-15-2021 11:26 AM

Half the dialog is in Spanish and Spielberg doesn’t want to sully his movie with subtitles.

Do people really go to non animated musicals anymore?

Did it really need to be remade?

Actually Spielberg thought that adding subtitles would be disrespectful to the Spanish language and give the impression that English is the dominant language.

I worked on some reshoots for 'The Fabelmans" which is his next big feature to be released next Thanksgiving. It's semi autobiographical, sort of his "coming of age" story.

It's starring Seth Rogan so who knows, he may have 2 bombs in a row on his hands.

No!

manbridge 74 12-15-2021 03:41 PM

No remake necessary. And certainly not from woke-tard cultural marxists.

Tobra 12-15-2021 04:35 PM

Craigster, you need to quit reading The Babylon Bee

OMG that shiite is true

Second bomb for Spielberg. Ninth bomb for Rogan.

Shaun @ Tru6 12-15-2021 05:32 PM

saw it again tonight, better the second time, more relaxed, you can appreciate the musical side as much as the story side. A rare film that the audio keeps up with the visual. Maybe surpasses it though is was shot beautifully.

Baz 12-15-2021 05:55 PM

The original was on just last week. I watched most of it. A real classic!

The actor who played Tony is Richard Beymer.

The following year after WSS was made, 1962, he starred in "Hemmingway's Adventures of a Young Man" - a real cult classic and worth a look.

Huge bomb. Will never make the money it cost back. Big mistake not having known stars. It’s a musical with show tunes at 2 1/2 hours. Cruel and unusual punishment! Probably will do well in San Francisco. Cost 100 million to make. Millions more to promote. If they would have put Ariana Grande in as Maria, the millennials and J Xers would’ve gone to it. Young people love her. But nobody can replace Natalie wood. Natalie was already a big star when the original came out in 61. The new movie needed known stars.

stevej37 12-16-2021 11:27 AM

Haven't been to the movies for a couple months. The new Matrix movie will be next.
WSS...no thanks.

Shaun @ Tru6 12-16-2021 11:40 AM

What about Nightmare Alley?

stevej37 12-16-2021 12:05 PM

^^^ Never heard of it...is it good?

Shaun @ Tru6 12-16-2021 12:09 PM

Just came out, directed by Guillermo del Toro

<iframe width="1280" height="720" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/Q81Yf46Oj3s" title="YouTube video player" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe>

stevej37 12-16-2021 12:12 PM

That...I will definitely go to see.
I forgot about it...

Shaun @ Tru6 12-16-2021 12:13 PM

I think I'm seeing it tomorrow night.

stevej37 12-16-2021 12:15 PM

^^ Please report back.

Shaun @ Tru6 12-16-2021 12:15 PM

Will do. Really looking forward to it. Did not see Antlers.

stevej37 12-16-2021 12:19 PM

I did. It was good and typical of his movies. (pans lab)
I won't say any more.

varmint 12-16-2021 12:48 PM

I vaguely remember the 40s version of nightmare alley. Looks really good.

plain fan 12-16-2021 04:47 PM

I've seen the original once and I appreciate the craftsmanship that went into making the movie. Technically amazing with some of the tracking shots, etc. I can also understand why it was culturally significant at that time in history. I also very much enjoy the score for the movie, the singing and dancing does nothing for me but the music does. I don't think it needed to be remade but I'll give the remake a chance eventually. Not something that requires theater viewing, IMO.

Definitely want to see Nightmare Alley, preferably in the theater but not a requirement.
Definitely want to see Spiderman: No Way Home in the theater.
Definitely want to see The Matrix: Resurrections in the theater.

Missed Antlers but want to see it as well.

Shaun @ Tru6 12-17-2021 06:21 PM

Nightmare Alley. Not really a del Torro film. Or maybe one that he wrote and directed while on horse tranquilizers. It's recognizable as a del Toro movie, but it isn't.

Cate Blanchett was delicious. As was Rooney Mara.

Baz 12-17-2021 07:13 PM

Ooooo Cate!

sc_rufctr 12-17-2021 08:00 PM

I don't know why but whenever someone mentions "West Side Story" I think of "A Streetcar Named Desire".

STELLA!

I read a bunch of user reviews on RT. They are all over the place..I'll still see it next week.

Shaun @ Tru6 12-18-2021 04:33 AM

Just read through 3 pages of RT audience. it is a 69% audience score movie. The problem is it's not a del Torro story. Acting and sets and lighting were excellent. But they can't save it from not being a del Torro story. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts. I equate it to Wes Anderson's French Dispatch. I love Anderson and del Torro equally but for very different styles. French Dispatch was a huge disappointment.

WSS got expected reviews on RT. Definitely worth seeing in the theatre if you like musicals. I am (a little unfortunately) seeing it again tonight, old gf called and asked if I would take her. A burden I must bear.
