Electricity for the spark plug and then eventually the lights comes from a magneto. Don’t expect much in the way of lights. Carburetors are cheap to purchase for the bike, so you may just want to try doing that. Although some carburetor cleaner may loosen everything up. I’m attaching a video on how to start the bike. It’s hard to see the spark as the magneto doesn’t put out much juice. A good way to test to see if you’ve got spark is to just spray a little starting fluid in the carburetor, pull in the start lever, and pedal like a madman! Once everything is tuned up it will start as easy as it does in this video. https://youtu.be/mSdtHkBVHOs

You are probably going to want to use either non-ethanol gas OR rebuild the carbs and replace gas lines etc with ethanol-safe stuff. Treat it like the glorified weedeater that it is

Getting me some gas tomorrow, and see if I can get fuel into the carb. Hope it will start. You know what kind of oil it needs? I see the drain for what looks like for the gears. I can't seem to fine the fill and drain for the motor? Wonder if 30w oil will do? |

I am a moped and scooter enthusiast (see signature) and you have a lot of good advice here.
This era of Puch would have no battery and would power the lights etc just from the magneto, batteries only became required later when the feds made it a requirement that headlight and taillight operate even with the engine not running. Even with models where the battery is included it is common to delete it to reduce weight and complexity. If it were me and my goal were to just get it rideable again (versus making it a showpiece) I would -get new tires and tubes (they mount like bike tires, bet you've never changed one of those before) -clean out the the carb and jets -flush the tank and fuel lines -figure out why there is no spark (probably the kill switch or a bad condenser, not much to go wrong) -fire it up and ride off into the sunset Seattle has a pretty solid scooter and moped scene, and a few bars and arcades that are frequented by folks in this scene. Back when I was living in Kuala Lumpur there were moped gangs called "rempits" who would generally engage in hooliganism and showing off. What can I say, mopeds are fun! 2 smoke!

Replace the tires and any rubber lines in the fuel system.
Clean the fuel tank. Clean and rebuild the carburetor with new o-rings,gaskets and whatnot. Rebuild anything hydraulic in the brake system. Grease anything that moves. Change the gearbox fluid. Install a new air filter and spark plug and see what you have. |

That's pretty cool, I haven't seen one of those in years. Back in the late 70s when we lived in Destin, Florida, a girl I was friends with won a moped from the local AM radio station, WNUE. It was fun putting around on that thing.

The original owners manual specified against using unleaded gas.
On my two strokes, I always used Yamalube 2R. Gearbox fluid was ATF type F. https://vintagemopeds.files.wordpress.com/2014/04/puch-maxi-owners-manual.pdf |

I have no idea what the reasoning was. In a 70’s four stroke, it was usually to prevent valve recession but that won’t apply to a two stroke.

Most of it is film related stuff, 25 years of it. All got cleaned out into a big dumpster. Not too many people park in their garages up here. Narrow, windy street makes it difficult to get out. |
