my dog is funny to watch.
he is almost like two dogs.
one version is when my wife is home alone. he is vigilant, runs the perimeter of the house and barks like a rabid animal at everything that passes within what he considers his "no fly zone". i sometimes will call my wife, when i am at the office and i hear Hank just going off. barking. her Zoom calls always ends in disaster. super funny. when i am home alone working, he is so chill. sleeps at my feet. the UPS guy just dropped off a package and i just heard a low guttural growl coming from my feet-area. that's it. he is currently asleep right next to me. i hear people running down the trail behind my house and everything. my poor wife is the sheep he feels he need to guard. me..clearly, i'm the shepherd.

I could only wish my dog turned off.
He is super vigilant. As I type, we have a drywall contractor doing a small job. Dog is NOT happy. |

We have two dachshunds. They both follow my wife everywhere in the house or in the yard. Our female stands guard at the back door waiting for my wife to return if she leaves the house. We keep the food we feed them in our laundry room, next to the dog treats. I am the one that feeds them twice per day. They know at laundry time that we are just inches away from the treat container. Any possible action in the laundry room is watched carefully, a do never know when a treat might just appear in our hands.
The male ALWAYS takes whatever is offered from a right hand only. He just always goes to the right hand for his treat. They don't get very many treats, they are underfed and lacking in treats in their view.

Our dog just saved our lives… she just scared off the UPS truck driving on the road a mile west of us… it wasn’t coming here anyway but at least we are ‘safe’…

The two of them seem to know the sound of an Amazon or UPS truck. They alert us there is a new package on the porch. Better than any Ring camera system. No batteries needed.

Our dog saves our lives every night. For every night before bed, our dog sits on the back deck and surveys the perimeter. His dedication is noble. He has the appearance of a majestic sentry on the ramparts of the most august of kingdoms. Once our dog is satisfied that he has driven off all potential villains by the shear awesomeness of his countenance, he barks to come inside. Thank you, good Sir Teddy.

Alexa has a ‘skill’ called Meow. Basically it plays cat sounds until you tell it to stop. Our dog loves this one.

We have a big Aussie that has adopted me as King, and follows me everywhere outdoors, luckily, he follows my wife indoors. He has to do a perimeter sweep of our 10 acres on a daily basis, and interacts well with our outdoor farm animals, he does the twilight porch sitting sentinel bit as well. We have a scatter brained little Pom mix that is super vigilant, and barks at the wind blowing, but he is just now 2 years old, so some mellowing is expected in the years to come. No crumb can drop on the floor without him hearing, and searching for it.
We also have a Cavalier King Charles that had been my daughter's dog, but unfortunately lost both bug eyes. She gets around like she can still see. I can have her outside on the farm offleash, and she will echo locate where I am, and come running. It is a rare occasion that she runs into anything, I think her remaining senses have kicked into overdrive. Last edited by ckelly78z; 01-07-2022 at 01:59 PM.. |

I had a bad cancer diagnosis this spring and chemo kept me in bed more than usual. My GSD will NOT leave the side of the bed now when i'm in it. She somehow knows to keep a closer eye on me.
Had a bad night a few months back and had to lay down on the floor en-route to the bathroom. My dog came right to my face, then directly to my sleeping wife and barked until she got up. I've heard of trained service dogs that do this sort of thing, But mine has had no service training. Dogs are amazing... The craziest thing is if I sneeze (rarely, once every day or two) she HAS to get up, put her front paws on the bed so she can reach me and touch my neck with her nose. It really seems like she is checking my temp... Never did this pre-cancer. Never knew a dog could be such a great friend! ![]()

I've got two Border Terriers. One is very handsome but not at all smart. But Hey, you're that good looking you don't need to be smart. The other guy is smart. Very smart. He's quite good at picking who is a bit dodgy, and barks his head off at them as they walk past the house. Which doesn't do any harm if they are having a look around for houses that are easy pickings. The other 95% of who walk past he is very charming towards them

![]() When We first got Bosco he was about 2 months old. I opened the front door to get the paper one morning and he went scooting out past me as I was hollering at him to come back. He got down to the end of the driveway, fumbled around with the paper and as I watched in astonishment, he came running back in the house with it. Next morning I asked him if he wanted to go get the paper and he ran to the front door and has gotten it every morning since! Smartest critter we’ve ever had. I’d like to cancel the stupid liberal paper but Bosco lives to bring it in every morning and I can’t deprive him of that joy! |
