I would not be surprised to see Trump there selling hats.

It’s another parking lot Grand Prix, just around a football stadium, as opposed to a casino.

What used to be a pro tennis event in Key Biscayne in the early spring has been moved in recent years to Miami. It is part of the clay court season leading up to French Open in May.

They hold part of the event in that football stadium. It must be part of some bigger push to make that venue multi sport and relevant for more than just 4 months out of the year.

I'd prefer bringing back Hockenheim and Nurburgring and getting back to the European roots that Liberty Media promised it would do but now seems to be going in opposite direction.

javadog 05-04-2022 06:59 AM

Blame Bernie. He made a lot of improvements to the professionalism of the sport but he structured it to be far too costly. I think there will come a point in time where it implodes.

As you alluded to later, Liberty and F1 are going for the green.

As Lord Hesketh said on making a small fortune in motor racing

... first start with a large fortune.

At some point, it becomes unsustainable. That’s why we lost the traditional tracks. Bernie limited them to income from certain streams, while keeping the big income streams for himself and charging a stupid amount of money for them to hold a race.

And then he locked in the rights for himself for an absurd length of time.

CurtEgerer 05-04-2022 09:24 AM

But then reading the Porsche press release about their F1 program, they basically say it is such an incredibly good deal for them financially that they can't not do it. I'm thinking to myself, really? I really don't understand it.

Two things:

The best team tries to have the best car and driver.
The best driver tries to get a seat with the best team and car.

I am not a Hamilton fan but I've seen amazing drives from him time and time again.
I haven't watched a F1 race in years, maybee age is catching up to him.
Hamilton has been dominant for more than just his on track performances.
He does a lot of off track work.

GH85Carrera 05-05-2022 09:57 AM

I too think Hamilton is overrated. No doubt at all, he is a very talented driver, and he rarely makes stupid mistakes and crashes in practice or even worse in qualifying. He understands the old adage, to finish first, first you must finish. He has a crazy record of finishing races. A big part of that is his car almost never breaks down. Even when a tire shreds on the last lap, he can win a race.

So it is not just the car, but no doubt he has had THE best car on track for most of the last 8 years. It is nice to see him in mid pack and struggling to pass, and seeing his teammate finishing way ahead. It is a long season and the point after the last race is the real measure. Then we will know if his skills can match his teammate.

herr_oberst 05-05-2022 10:06 AM

That helmet is unreal. (Ironically, it looks VERY real)

red 928 05-05-2022 10:06 AM

it's easy to be good when you
have a huge advantage

Hamilton has a history of cruising
to wins with plenty left in reserve
that he could turn up on demand

While others were going full blast
he was on cruise control

Mercedes was great
hamilton not as much

yellowperil 05-05-2022 10:46 AM

There's rumors going 'round

That Vettel might not attend this race. If he's gone he'll be missed. Not always my favorite, but I liked him these last few years and it was sad to see him struggle. Nice guy and funny.

Ironic that a guy with a huge carbon footprint is a climate change guy.

Some are commenting that Seb appears to have been to the donut shop a bit much lately

Actually the date on the shirt reads 2060.

WTFK is Vettel protesting now? OMG just retire already.

Tervuren 05-05-2022 05:49 PM

The that is now Southern Florida appears to have cycled under and above water several times.
It is losing out to a receding northern hemispheric ice age and rising unweighted landmasses farther north.
Not really sure what can be done other than relocate.
Fresh water will be an issue even if they build walls to keep the ocean out.

Oh well, ya gotta do what ya gotta do!

Deschodt 05-06-2022 09:34 AM

While not a fan of Lewis in general, I love what he did today at the interviews... The FIA is clamping down on jewelry and so he is wearing literally 20 kgs of it... 3 watches, 5 necklaces, 2-3 rings per finger on all fingers... LOL, nice FU to the FIA...

Nicely capped by "if they want me to rip out my nose ring to race, I'll go visit Miami, we have a replacement driver, I'm good either way"...

Most excellent...

matthewb0051 05-06-2022 09:47 AM

^^^
Interesting. I wonder what temperature is required to melt gold.

I'd think he needs to just go with it. FIA gave him a lot of leeway on the prohibition on political speech the last few years. And by doing so they opened up the doors for Seb to spout his nonsense too.

javadog 05-06-2022 10:18 AM

Sounds like it might be hard to remove his nose ring.

I’ve read what he had to say, I’m behind him on this one. The FIA can go **** off.

matthewb0051 05-06-2022 11:04 AM

Miami track first impression... Has the feel of an amusement park. Sort of like pretending you are in England while at Epcot Center.

Also looks more like an Indy Car street track.

CurtEgerer 05-06-2022 11:20 AM

first crash of the weekend, Bottas .... at the marina

So he was born with a gold burro type ring in his nose?

I'm pretty sure that F1 will dig down and find the emotional strength somehow to carry on without Sir Lewis.

yellowperil 05-06-2022 12:13 PM

It's tough being a Ham fan (Me)

Almost a full sec behind George R already, perhaps if he off loaded the 40 lbs of junk
jewellery he might be quicker.

Rooting for Bottas and Kmag now.

rfuerst911sc 05-06-2022 12:19 PM

The FIA have granted Hammy a two race exemption for jewelry . What a joke .

Turns out that it’s the earrings in his right ear that are the problem, not a nose ring. He has a stud in his nose, not a ring.

This rule has been in place for almost 20 years, why **** with it now?

oldE 05-06-2022 12:50 PM

Wasn't it Gordon Murray who forbade his drivers from wearing a wristwatch as the mass of the watch slowed steering response?
I certainly respect Lewis as a driver, but anyone who wears metal on their person in a potentially flammable environment is a fool.

Imagine adding metal to this situation:

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1651871686.jpg

javadog 05-06-2022 02:14 PM

Small earrings are a hazard? Really?

Come on, think about it for just half a second. The amount of heat it would take to raise the temperature of the metal hot enough to burn his skin? Guess what, sunshine, that same heat would have fried his skin long before that.

stealthn 05-06-2022 02:22 PM

Just watching practice and have to say that track layout looks terrible!

I predict a crash fest on race day…

rfuerst911sc 05-06-2022 02:30 PM

If FP2 is a reflection of real speed then the mods Mercedes have added are working . Might be a good race , we shall see .

George reported bouncing worse with medium tires. It looked pretty bad but he had the pace.

Crofty explaining the reason Russell is doing well and Hammy not, asked Jensen and Karun:
Could it be since George was in a horrible car for the last 3 years that he is more able to drive a sub-par Mercedes better than Hammy since he is used to the car being perfect?

JB thought it was a mental thing for Hammy since he is used to being P1 all the time.

Sounded like backward logic and a bit of puckering up to me.

Right before ESPN cut out the boys predicted multiple SC on Sunday.

I really like Miami, been a few times over the decades but I'm not fired up by this weekends track, seems all bit cheesy to me, over-hyped, fake marina, fake beach club, pop-up track, dull location etc :(

Was hoping for something with a bit more of a Miami Vice type skyline as a backdrop ie blue sea, white sand, beautiful people, cigarette boats and high rise condo's etc

Really like the idea of a night Las Vegas race as that should look spectacular but at the moment the Miami race is not doing anything for me

Maybe I'm being a bit unfair having been spoilt with all the 'classic' F1 tracks that have used the natural topography for elevation changes or/and have a long F1 history

Shiny and new doesn't mean better but I'm hoping I'm wrong!

Captain Ahab Jr 05-06-2022 03:17 PM

Some Redbull Swamp Buggy racing publicity, now this is good!

I was expecting a better location also, I mean to a lot of people (me)for one, it's paradise.
I hope you're right (about being wrong) if you know what I mean.

astrochex 05-06-2022 03:36 PM

I’m in Central Florida and F1 made it to the local Entertainment Tonight broadcast. Danny Ric was doing a bit for a Heineken anti-drunk driving campaign.
