Easy answer: Alpine. The dynamic with father / son on AM is not something I would want to be involved in.

I have to agree with everyone regarding Ferrari's race "management." They don't appear to be watching the race unfold. They had 30+ laps to see that the hard tires were slower (both Haas cars switched to them early), and yet, they still used them. I can easily see Mercedes overhauling them for second in the CC, and Charles is pretty much doomed as far as the driver's championship is concerned.

Yeah, what's up with this? I saw a repost from his Twitter where he publicly disputes the thing.

Edit: but F1 and Sky are both reporting it on their Instagram like it is done deal

My gut feeling is Piastri has been in discussions for a while with Williams to replace Latifi . Just a hunch . The statement by Alpine and then the denial by Piastri reminds me of Chip Ganassi vs McLaren both arguing over who owns Palou . Very strange.

mikehinton 08-02-2022 01:07 PM

Seems like there is some disagreement about the current contract that exists between Alpine and Piastri...

Seems everybody on both sides of the pond want to be in McLaren. The cars seem to be a handful these past few years. What’s wrong with Alpine to make FA as well as Piastri want out?? This Aston Martin FA move seemed ideal for Piastri it would have seemed? Silly season indeed. And who’s in a rush to be in the Williams?

Captain Ahab Jr 08-02-2022 02:45 PM

Alonso want to stay but Alpine didn't want him for as long so he wanted to stay so he cut himself a better deal with Aston Martin

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/formula1/62389741

I've read Alpine's option on Piastri ran out the day before the shock Alonso announcement from Aston Martin. If so, Piastri is now a free agent, he knows McLaren are wanting to replace Ricciardo so he must be exploring this option or a deal has already been done

To add more intrigue, Alonso and Mark Webber are friends, Mark Webber is Piastri's manager so I'm sure they will have talked before the musical chairs kicked off

I've also read that Schumacher is out of Haas, if this is true does it mean Herta will replace him as he would seem the ideal fit for the team?

astrochex 08-02-2022 03:14 PM

Alpine should be pissed if Piastri leaves after the large investment they have made in him. How much more money is McLaren offering?

I would be over the moon if Herta is in a Haas next year.

Exciting times! I wonder if SV is all done or maybe he comes to drive in North America?

Noah930 08-02-2022 05:40 PM

I think Vettel is done. He's a family man, now.

Thanks for the insight, Capt. From the Alonso perspective: is a 2-year deal at Aston Martin really better than a 1-year one at Alpine? You have a slower car, and an owner whose mgmt style even Otmar couldn't stand. And now you have to deal with that for 2 seasons. That's how you want to go out from F1?

Ya I don’t see the upside of going to Aston? The car has been crap most of the year, the strategy hasn’t been great and everything you hear about Lawrence makes him seem terrible. Lance will be forever the #1 driver, and he can’t even be bothered to check his mirrors.

I really hope the MSC rumors aren’t true. He seems to be hitting his stride finally and if HAAS can get a handle on the car after updates they could be a midfield threat the rest of the year.

Funny, before Seb retired it seemed like silly season was going to be pretty mild this year. Now it seems like there’s rumors about half the seats in the midfield teams. I’m seeing speculation about Piastri to AT in place of Yuki too?

stealthn 08-02-2022 09:21 PM

Wow, this is interesting; Mercedes saying RB and Ferrari are cheating (loophole) and the rules will change after the break. Ferrari seems to admit it but Horner says no, should make it interesting for the next race.

I always enjoy Aiden's explanations of racing. Here he describes his take on the latest driver shuffle. Extra points for referencing the Jenson Button drama that saw him going to Honder and winning the WDC, instead of Williams who were beginning their decline.

[Alex Albon] I understand that, with my agreement, Williams Racing have put out a press release this afternoon that I am driving for them next year. This is right and I have signed a contract with Williams for 2023. I will be driving for Williams next year.

porsche4life 08-03-2022 08:14 AM

Albons announcement was great, and then Piastri got in on the fun! 🤣

this has got to be a great time to work
for the mercedes F1 team.
Lots of opportunity for upward mobility with
so many of their top players jumping ship and
going to work for red bull

You likely get to have a cool looking Aston street car to drive as your company car!

That is about it. I wonder what company car the folks at Williams or HAAS get?
