getting reacquainted with oatmeal for breakfast.

one of the benefits of telework! i get to sit here, and simmer some oats. steel cut oats.

i do streamline the process by using the Bob's Red mill stuff that cooks a tiny bit faster. i dont know why a fell off the wagon. it is so good. i sweeten it with chopped up Majool dates. i would use Dried Prunes but that probably TOO MUCH fiber. like "crossing the beams" with fiber. no thanks.

for the record. i ate it for a year straight. every work day, a big bowl of oatmeal. it did ZERO to lower my cholesterol numbers. zero. its not the silver bullet we all are looking for. i still remember giving some blood samples thinking, "my doctor is gonna be surprised.."

"Mr Vash, your cholesterol numbers are still on the higher side of the spectrum..."

"!@#$#!@$!#!!" come to think of it, it's probably why i quit eating it. hahah.

What did you eat the rest of the day? Oatmeal can help with cholesterols but not if you put bacon on it.

Blue berries and bananas are my go to adds. Occasionally date sugar too.

I like it once in a while...but it's gotta have brown sugar on top.

Toast the oats lightly in a frying pan, no oil. Lightly. Just until you smell them.

Soak it overnight in the oat milk that you'll cook it in.

I eat the oatmeal just like everyone else. W lots of butters and drizzled with bourbon. ( in green!)

Today.

Dates and pecans.

I've had steel cut oats. I'm not a fan. I like rolled oats. I also like (prefer, actually) oat bran (Bob's Red Mill makes it). I feel like it's got more flavor. The consistency is much different.

I like to stir an egg into my steel cut oats and I often cube an apple to go on top. I think rolled oats get too mushy.

Mine is a mixture of rolled and steel cut oats (best of both worlds), mixed with fresh blueberries, cran raisins, and golden raisins....with a dash of truvia...one of my favorite breakfasts!

So right. Swap the Hungry Man diner special every morning and you will see the changes.

No molecules in oatmeal to do the job

To lower cholesterol is about meal replacement..

Download some recipes for overnight oats. Rolled oats are best for that. I like my mixture with peanut butter, chia seeds, & sweetened with a little maple syrup. I whiz it up in a blender & drink it like a milk shake. Think I'll make some tonight for tomorrow.

Here is what I do. I have the Quaker (or store brand) 1 minute oats.

Take 1-2 tsp of brown sugar and then mix in a "dash" or cinnamon. (I have a tiny measuring spoon marked dash). You do not need a ton of cinnamon. Mix the brown sugar and cinnamon together with a fork for about 5 seconds.

Add 1/2 cup of 1 minute oats and 1 cup of water. Microwave for 2 min 30 sec. (1200 Watts, longer if your microwave is lower Watts).

Stir and let it cool to taste, then drop on a layer of Quaker Simply Granola. This adds both flavor and texture.

I switched to this since last April with not much change in the rest of my diet and my cholesterol dropped from just barely in the bad range to dead in the middle of the excellent range.

I had this earlier in the week. Be warned, the regular takes a bit to cook but I believe they have an 'instant'. There is also a recipe on label for the overnight stuff.

It was very good

I also like overnight oats, either rolled or oat bran.

Another related note. If you cook pasta or rice (and presumably other complex carbs), let it get cold, and then reheat it, then the carbs are converted into "resistant carbs" which makes them act more like fiber.

Oats are the opposite. Oats already have a lot of resistant carbs, but once you cook them, they lose some of that. So overnight oats will retain that quality and therefor have fewer carbs that could get converted to fat.

That's me, and it's hereditary as my mom is the same. I had high cholesterol that I managed to drop by 100 points. Yes, one of the big changes was adding a lot more fiber to my diet. But what I believe the big difference came from was a drastic reduction of sugar. I almost (but not completely) got rid of sugary desserts/snacks, and monitored other food, and mostly eliminated foods high in sugar (other than eating some fruit, usually early in the day).

The theory is that sugar causes inflammation and inflammation increases cholesterol (IIRC).

Lots more fiber and lots less sugar made a HUGE difference for me (I think I went from 265 --> 165 or something like that)

As a kid we got oatmeal every time mom was cold. On a recent hotel stay in Eureka Springs, AR they have a "free" breakfast buffet. One of the items was oatmeal or one other choice was grits. I went for the biscuits and gravy with sausage with a side of fruit, and a glob of oatmeal in honor of mom.
