Scam Likely Phone Calls

I have a cell for my law practice and get a dozen or possibly two dozen Scam Likely calls every day. Then there are calls from local area code that end up being robo marketing calls as well.

I have to answer the area code calls as you never know when it is a client or potential client. Usually these are solar panels, insurance, medicare, or other stuff that is just a call center going down a list. Unfortunately, my number was owned by an old lady a few years ago and she must have been on everyone's radar. I'm tempted to sell the real estate that they believe she owns.

I recall about 10 years ago some governmental entity finally put a stop to the nonsense calls to land lines. Is there any hope that the same will happen for cells?

Oddly, my personal cell is a Northern NY area code and my kids have El Paso numbers. Occasionally those numbers get hit up but nothing like my business line, which I guess is because it is local.

My voicemail is constantly full because of these calls. I literally cannot keep up with them all.

And if I hear one more guy named "Randy" or "Jeff" with an Indian accent telling me he is calling from Texas...

Oh, the calls still come in on land lines...only 6 so far today.

It's my cell that gets the least. Because it's usually off..only used when either Cindy or I are out and about. Phone scammers don't leave voice mail messages.

I messed around a bit with a female caller yesterday...tried to say she was from comcast wanting to "fix" my computer remotely. Sure...I'm an idiot willing to grant that. Gee, it was kind of fun...just before she hung up she accused me of having sex with my mother...

"Wireless phone subscribers have always been able to add their personal wireless phone numbers to the national Do-Not-Call list, either online, or by calling toll-free - 1-888-382-1222 - from the phone number they wish to register. The do-not-call rules require callers that are not exempt from the rules to stop telemarketing calls 30 days after you register a number.

There is no deadline for registering a number on the national Do-Not-Call list. There is also no longer any need to re-register a number – it will stay on the national Do-Not-Call list until you cancel your registration or discontinue service."

I signed up for that..it reduced the calls a bit.

The calls centers are outside of the US. These people laugh at the DNCL.

OTOH, there is essentially a do-not-mail list and since scammers can't afford to broadcast at foreign mail rates, it works to keep BofA, Citicorp and Wells Fargo off your back.

The Do Not Call list is only used by legitimate businesses.
You'll still get robo calls for car warranties, selling your property, etc.

It might be helpful for you to purchase a robocall blocking app.

I had a call today from a guy named Joey at Comcast, telling me about upgrading my service. I said, hey Joey, take me off your do not call list. He hung up without a word. Mother****ers!

Yesterday I had the usual voice over IP call from Asia. Pause... pause... while the cheap call comes through. Asian accent tells me my internet is about to be cut off.

I said "Thanks for calling, I've been wanting to talk to you about life insurance. One dollar I give you a million dollars of life insurance. You don't need to do anything. Just tell me your bank account number and I'll take it out myself." They try to explain to me they don't want life insurance, then shortly after I'm yelling at them to tell me their bank account number." "JUST TELL ME YOUR BANK ACCOUNT NUMBER YOU F***ING C**T, TELL ME YOU F**ING NUMBER." They quickly hang up thinking they have come across a bigger nutter than themselves.

I have a local DID number for my MS Teams account for work. Every day around 3:00 PM I get 6 spam calls in rapid succession. I just rapidly click to reject the calls. It varies each day, but all 6 come from the same spoofed number. But, the name on caller ID changes with each attempt.

or a whistle.
Sell them some tinnitus.

I don't like telemarketeers.
I once asked them for their number so I could call back at their inconvenience...
Didn't get it...

I ask them for the company address. "Just need to confirm who is calling"

So, both women began using a federal law to cash in on the harassing calls.

Now, Rose is $1,500 richer. Pepper has made $10,000 and counting.

Most of the scam calls I get are just a robot, posing as a human. Most of the calls in recent months are waste of time calls wanting to know if we are interested in selling our house. Only for 10 times market value.

The pain in the butt part is my phone is my business phone. I feel obligated to answer most calls, because they well my be a client, or future client.

I had one call from Italy followed by one from France 30 seconds later. I did not answer either of these as we have no international customers at present.

I get a lot of calls from my area code with my first 3 digits and a different last 4. I never answer unless my phone or I recognize the number. Seems like they never leave a message (thankfully).

I feel for those who use their cells for business. I have a call blocking app on my cell. I don't answer anything that isn't in my contacts any longer. They still get through by text occasionally. I also am apparently the owner of some real estate in Seattle and my name is Lee. Those folks I have fun with when I feel like it because it's usually a text.

Are you using these techniques to get settlements from them?

The very simple cure is 100% authentic real caller ID, no spoofing allowed. If the phone number is not owned by the caller, it will not go through.

I understand some companies or people want to block their phone number. Fine, just don't expect to all me. As soon as the technical specifications for real caller ID would be implemented, scam calls will stop. Enforcement of do not call would be easy.

I have received phone calls that the called ID said was ME! It is impossible to call oneself, yet there was my name on the caller ID.

The technology is there. The phone companies don't want to implement it. They must be making money off the call volume somehow. I just looked, the last 12 calls I received were spam, BS unwanted calls. That needs to change.

A few years ago when I was working in downtown DC, I got a call from "The IRS" telling me I need to pay or owed or whatever. I asked for the address since I was just down the street, I literally was a block or two away.

The guy got irate and called me a sand n-word. Then hung up.

At my old office I got a call on our company land line, and caller ID said IRS. The guy said I owed just over $1,000 and I had to buy gift cards at Walgreens in the next two hours, or they were sending a SWAT team to get me and to take me to to jail. I called him a lot of names, and said send the big SWAT team to come get me you worthless POS. The never did show up.

I know for a fact, the IRS does not call, and they sure don't want a gift card from Walgreens. They always send a registered letter. That will get my attention for sure and a very polite response.
