I feel like the mustang driver should be charged with a count of something (attempted murder?) for everyone in the bus. I wouldn't expect the charges to stick, and would expect the results to be guilty of something far less, but the charges/trial need to make an impression and leave a mark.

Back in the days when I rode the bus to school we were rolling along at 40 MPH or so when an old pickup t-boned us. It hit just right under where my feet were. The bus was fully loaded and it was a long bus. We bounced a bit, but did not even change lanes. The pickup was smashed. Not one kid was even shaken up, no one sued anyone. We were all amazed at how well the bus fared in the crash. It was a USAF school bus as I lived on base and the school did not provide bus service to kids on base. The police wrote up the report and we were delivered home.

Its not only them, but it us uncanny how they seem to have taken the lead, and ran with it in this category.
My theory is that it is the lowest hanging fruit , muscle car wise, and plenty fast enough to get in serious trouble with.
Im betting a lot of not car guys grab them as their first foray into the performance car world

Low (relatively) cost of entry means there are a lot of them on the road, and the percentage of unskilled (in the way of power) drivers, driving them is likely higher than with more expensive vehicles. Folks that can afford more expensive vehicles are usually older with better judgement. Not to say that there aren't responsible young folks that are good (don't get in accidents) drivers or young guys driving expensive cars, or old guys with expensive cars that are bad drivers.

The odds of more serious mishaps are higher with a mustang than a Porsche for several reasons.

I had a work colleague that upgraded from a Honda Accord with a 4-cyl to an Alfa Romeo giulia quadrifoglio with 505hp. He drove it like an old lady during the break in. After the break in he decided to put it into "race" mode to turn right from a stop sign to see what it was like. It didn't turn out well. He fishtailed and ended up hopping the curb and side swiping a tree. After that he was scared of the car.

^^^ This, and Fred's post both make sense. Toss in that some on the internet look for Mustang screw ups while ignoring other brands.

I remember having to do a speech on this back in HS. From what I recall:

Seat belts were apparently originally intended to keep passengers from bouncing off sharp edges and splintering wood on automotive dash boards. In a school bus, the seat back in front of you is padded.

If a car rolls over and you're suspended by the seat belt, releasing it will gently drop you on your head. In a bus, that might be a fall of several feet.

All I can recall off the top of my head, at the moment.

My guess is the seat belt issue is in a large part $ related and the fact that school busses are a decades old design.

It's amazing his injuries were so minor and that more kids were not more seriously injured.

He should do time, a lot of time, but given our justice system, likely a slap on the wrist. It will probably depend on how much money he has to spend on a lawyer.

And yes, it could have been some other hot rodded muscle car, but in this case it was two mustangs racing. pwd72s, sorry that chip on your shoulder is so large.
