There is something so special watching the best in the world compete and love doing it and hugging competitors at the end. I'm not much of a team sports person but love and appreciate seeing individuals who are the best at what they do.

"some landfill in Michigan"..... Mt Brighton by chance? I skied there and at Alpine Valley in highschool and college in the 80's. about 2hrs from where I lived just south of Toledo.

Heh, I probably exaggerated (seriously, to a landfill?) but it was Cannonsburg for me. I think it actually was a natural hill, a majestic 200' high. Wasn't there some 1980's movie that mentioned Brighton?

So no, I've never slalomed the methane.

But it's interesting that learning on ice/manmade snow (can you even turn?) and a little racing in college (can you turn exactly there?) you can turn anywhere, anytime. These days I prefer my snow soft, nearby and near the bar...

TV can't capture what these people do BTW. Those aren't your local blue runs... I love the super-G as there are real turns but still at death-speed.

My brother married a girl from Wakefield and we went there for the wedding in July - late 70's.

We went on tour in the area - it was beautiful. Cool at night - almost cold - this was in July!

Visited this ski jump:

Copper Peak

Copper Peak is a ski flying hill designed by Lauren Larsen and located in Ironwood, Michigan, United States. It was built in 1969 and inaugurated one year later. The site was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973 and designated a Michigan State Historic Site in 1971. The site is currently used as a summer tourist attraction.

That would be so sooooo cool to see used in anger. I can't even imagine. Like the gravity/snow version of a NHRA dragster race - from my point of view. Awesome that someone does it but i want to be a safe distance away....

The winter games have a special opportunity to focus on truly crazy things. Sure the summer runners run very fast, but can they do barrel jumping? (I know they don't these days, but they should) Can they fling themselves 100m+ off of a shelf on skis that are barely attached to their feet?

Plus of course xc-skis and guns. I can ski, and I can shoot - so it's almost relatable.

US womens hockey really needs to improve their PP and their quality SOGs. They're close to 50 SOGs per game but not scoring much. They were leading the Czechs 20 -0 SOGs without scoring. The Czechs take their first shot and score. Somethin' ain't right.

What is taking the IOC and WDA so long to make a decision on the doping finding of the female Russian skater ??? By all accounts that I have read online she clearly tested positive for a banned substance .

No grey area she failed . Is everyone waiting for the check to clear 😡 . This does cast a very dark shadow over the games ....... past/present and future . Let's not forget they are competing as ROC because of past doping failures !!!

In my opinion this is pure BS and everyone is just trying to cover their a$$ .

As always follow the money. The main argument seems to be who gave the drug to a 15 year old and who withheld the information. It is a shame that the kid is going to be punished. Russia needs to be banned, period, full stop.

Mikaela Shiffrin is having a rough Olympics . Not sure what the problem is but for someone of her ability to ski out in two straight events is very strange . Sad to see her struggle but that's life in the public eye.

Just to follow up on this.

Announcers were discussing her father's death last night during Super G race. She has said she was very mad at him for dying and that in situations like her present one, she would have been able to discuss with him and find a solution.

That's a tough ride but she's back on her feet.

She (edit: Mikaela) was P1 at first split last night but ended up about half second down at end. That is not a race she normally does along with downhill I believe.

I'm hoping Sofia Goggia, who won downhill in 2018, will be able to compete in the downhill. She skipped Super G due to an injury last month. She had a pretty bad ski wreck that resulted in knee injury and a slight fracture to tibia(?).

Here is her crash in Cortina back in January.

Last night's race and the remaining two are not Shiffirins strong suit but I give her credit of fighting the internal doubts and trying her best . I think last night's run did a lot to clear her head.

She's 26 years old and still a great skier , if she chooses this isn't her last Olympics . But no one could blame her if she decides there's more to life than skiing.

I have the TV on in the background now while I do some work. Curling is on.

Dang, there is more screaming and yelling during the game than in porn. Or so I've been told

That ski flying hill is waaaay out in the boonies. The pic is a good indication of how remote it actually is but that forest covers many, many many miles of ground.

Luge and skeleton have to be two of the craziest sports out there . Going 75-80 mph and two inches off the ice must be quite the adrenaline rush !!!

Congratulations to Lindsey Jacobellis and Nick Baumgartner of the US for winning the gold medal in team cross snow board . She's 36 and he's 40 . Just 24 hours ago he finished 10th in the men's solo and thought he was done . What a comeback story !
