DUI interlock device, would you blow in it ?

I got a no start towed in this week . I will most likely need to cycle the ignition dozens of times to diagnose .
It has one of those DUI interlocks on it . The procedure is blow , suck , blow .
This car is super filthy, and reeks .
I don't care if there is a new mouth piece , or a 12 foot piece of hose on that, no way I am pulling that air in my lungs . Rona and all .

I got authorization to disable today, but of course their procedure did not work . and I spent 40 minutes on hold to get said information. Tomorrow , I will just jump the starter directly , and let them sort it out. Im pretty sure it only dis ables the crank/start circuit .
Customer is not happy with me .
Can you blame me ?

Not in the slightest. I would have thought there would be a reasonable work around intended for service, for exactly thre reasons you describe.

No way am I blowing that device.

Sounds like you contacted the interlock contractor. If not I'd start there because it is their equipment and not the vehicle owner's.

Owner is not happy. Pfft. I'd say this is their issue to fix, as in get the info and approval from the interlock contractor to allow you to bypass/work on. And B, they are in this predicament of their own making.

We have one or two judges here that require the portable devices rather than vehicle mounted. They see it as a prevention from using the wife's or kid's car. I see it as a prohibition on drinking rather than a drinking and driving issue. Those portable devices are GPS enabled and take a photo of the person blowing. There is a moral to that story somewhere and but for the grace of God...

I wouldn't either.

Would a can of air and a vacuum work?

...uh no. Was in the exact same situation. I had the service writer call the dude, tell him come on down, wait until I needed him to blow into that thing to diagnose what was going on.

you've gotta blow, suck, blow.

I'm thinking nasty old shop vac, most of those will do suck or blow. Or maybe a vacuum and a leaf blower.

I spent 45 minutes on hold today. My persistence yielded me an email with instructions on how to by pass the device . Want to guess what it was ?
Unplug the handheld device . I read that and thought to myself " this cannot be right , no way it could be that simple " . I unplugged said unit, and still no crank. Last time I did this, I had to undo 2 splices, and put them back to stock, then reversed when I was done .
I almost got a length of hose and went for it, but that suck part has me going uh uh not this white boy .
Im glad we are all on the same page .

Dang I just realized...

You shouldn't blow in the device unless you are trying to get the client in trouble. Depending on the device it could result in a violation report to probation department. Wouldn't be a problem for you though but the guy it would be painful for a bit.

It'd be funny though

They are super finicky. All the ones I have tried in the past, I found it very difficult to make them work. Some you had to hum while you blew. No way you are going to fool it with a shop vac, shop air, or anything of the like .
I used to get the heebee jeebees long before covid, when you just had to blow, even with a new nozzle .
Not my problem . no amount of money could make me take a pull of that thing

Ah, somehow I completely missed the "vacuum hose" part of what you said. Only the "air can" registered. Hahah, I'm gettin' old!

Don't do it Fred! Tell the customer to come by and do it if he wants it fixed so bad!
